Chapter 12 - An Unfinished War

The C-20 military transport plane climbed through the gray, heavy cloud deck above Boston, leveling off at thirty-two thousand feet into the clear, blinding sunlight above the storm.

I sat in the leather seat of the executive cabin, my dress blues hanging neatly in the garment bag across from me. I had changed into my everyday operational duty uniform. The three silver stars on my collar felt heavier today, not with guilt, but with the quiet, solitary burden that leadership always demanded.

Captain Simmons walked down the narrow aisle, holding a red-striped leather folder marked **TOP SECRET / SCI / EYES ONLY.**

"General Harrington," Simmons said, coming to attention. "This just came over the secure satellite link from the Joint Staff Operations Center. It's marked for your eyes immediately."

I took the folder, breaking the red wax seal.

Inside was a single-page intelligence brief from the Defense Intelligence Agency, dated less than an hour ago.

My eyes moved across the lines of text:

**SUBJECT: OPERATION SHADOW HAMMER - FORMER HELMAND NETWORK RESURGENCE**

**SECURITY LEVEL: TOP SECRET**

*1. Intelligence intercepts indicate that the 2015 ambush on Route 611 in Helmand Province—previously attributed solely to local insurgent cells—was coordinated with technical targeting data leaked from an internal Pentagon logistics contractor.*

*2. Recent financial forensic tracking connected to the criminal assets seized from Eleanor Harrington’s offshore accounts has revealed repeated, encrypted transfers from a front company registered in Dubai, linked to an international defense broker under investigation for the 2015 breach.*

*3. Preliminary analysis suggests Eleanor Harrington’s late associates did not simply suffer bad investments; they were liquidating illicit funds tied to the compromise of General Harrington’s unit movements nine years ago.*

*4. Primary target is currently mobile. Threat level to General Harrington’s forward command: CRITICAL.*

I stared at the paper.

The hum of the jet engines seemed to fade into a distant, hollow roar.

The ambush in Helmand hadn't been bad luck. It hadn't been an unfortunate encounter with an insurgent patrol.

It had been an execution attempt.

And the money that had funded my father’s "failed investments"—the money Eleanor had spent the last nine years desperately trying to recover and conceal through Clare’s marriage to the son of Vance Global—was blood money. Money paid by the very people who had tried to kill me in that valley.

My family hadn't just tried to extort a wedding.

They were sitting on the edge of a treason investigation that went deeper than I had ever dreamed.

Captain Simmons stood watching me, noticing the change in my posture. "General? Is everything all right, ma'am?"

I slowly closed the red folder, running my thumb over the broken wax seal.

I looked out the small oval window. Far below, the clouds rolled like an endless white desert, hiding the world underneath.

I thought about my sister Clare, weeping in a jail cell over ruined silk dresses.

I thought about my mother Eleanor, screaming in the dirt about lost status.

They thought the battle was over. They thought they had lost their pride, their money, and their place in high society.

They had no idea that the real war had just begun.

"Captain Simmons," I said, my voice dropping into the quiet, terrifying calm that my staff had learned to fear in the war room.

"Yes, General?"

"Contact the Director of the Defense Intelligence Agency," I said, sliding the folder back into my briefcase and locking the steel clasp with a sharp, definitive click. "Tell him I won't be returning to the Pentagon tonight."

I looked toward the cockpit door.

"Tell him General Harrington is taking personal command of the investigation. And tell him we're going hunting."
