Chapter 7 - Kenneth's Crumbling World

Kenneth Sterling sat on the wooden bench outside the federal holding tank, clutching a paper cup of lukewarm water with trembling hands.

His expensive Italian wool suit was rumpled, smelling of stale sweat and cheap detention-cell disinfectant. For twelve hours, he had listened to Linda screeching at the guards until her vocal cords gave out, and Derek sobbing like a frightened toddler in the adjacent cell.

The heavy oak doors at the end of the corridor clicked open.

Kenneth looked up, expecting his corporate lawyer, Arthur Pendelton—a man Kenneth had paid hundreds of thousands of dollars over the years to bury his dirty laundry.

Instead, General Robert Hayes walked into the corridor, flanked by two armed Provost Marshal guards.

Kenneth scrambled to his feet, nearly spilling his water. "General! General Hayes! Thank God. Look, there’s been an enormous misunderstanding. Linda... Linda has a medical condition! She suffers from severe emotional dysregulation! I can pay for all of Maya's medical bills! I'll buy her a new car—I'll set up a personal trust fund for her right now! Just please, drop these ridiculous federal charges!"

General Hayes stopped two paces away, looking down at Kenneth with the kind of expression an executioner might give a condemned rat.

"Mr. Pendelton isn't coming, Kenneth," Hayes said softly.

Kenneth’s breath hitched. "What? Why not? Pendelton has been my attorney for twenty years!"

"Arthur Pendelton was arrested at his country club in Raleigh thirty minutes ago," Hayes stated, his voice completely flat. "The IRS Criminal Division seized his entire client archive. He is currently being booked on seventeen counts of conspiracy to commit federal wire fraud, aiding and abetting the theft of military benefits, and money laundering."

Kenneth took a step back, his knees hitting the wooden bench, forcing him to collapse back onto the seat. "No... no, no, no... Arthur was just handling the paperwork..."

"And then there is your company, Sterling Logistics," Hayes continued, taking a slow step forward, pinning Kenneth with his gaze. "You built that business using the three million dollars you stole from Clara's estate, didn't you?"

"I—I invested it! For the family! For Maya's future!"

"You didn't invest a single dime for Maya," Hayes snapped, the sudden force in his voice making Kenneth flinch against the wall. "You used Maya's name to secure Department of Defense subcontracting shipping freight. You claimed your business was a *'Veteran-Owned Family Enterprise'* using Clara’s deceased veteran status and Maya’s active-duty credentials to bypass competitive bidding."

Kenneth’s mouth worked soundlessly, like a fish gasping on dry land.

"The Department of Defense has terminated every contract associated with your firm, effective at midnight," Hayes said. "Your commercial licenses are revoked. Your corporate accounts are frozen. The bank is foreclosing on your warehouse facilities before sunset."

"General... please..." Kenneth began to weep, tears cutting clean tracks through the grime on his gray cheeks. "She’s my daughter! Maya is my blood! You can't let them destroy me! I'm her father!"

"A father protects his child," Hayes whispered, leaning down until his face was inches from Kenneth's ear. "A father stands between his daughter and the storm. You? You held the umbrella over the woman who beat her, and then you handed Linda the steel chair."

Hayes straightened up, adjusting his lapels.

"Clara died believing you were a weak man who would eventually find his courage. But Clara was wrong. You weren't weak, Kenneth. You were just utterly, completely worthless."

Hayes turned on his heel and walked toward the exit.

"General!" Kenneth shrieked, crawling on his knees toward the retreating officer before an MP's rifle blocked his path. "General! What about the house?! Where am I supposed to go?! Where will we live?!"

Hayes paused at the threshold, looking back over his shoulder with a cold, terrifying smile.

"The United States Marshals are at your front gate right now, Kenneth. I suggest you start walking. Because by the time you get to Oak Ridge... your locks will already be changed."
