Chapter 4 - The Anatomy of an Ambush

Catherine Miller’s eyes darted from the sealed folder to Alexander’s face, but she did not drop her aristocratic posture. She reached down, picked up her fallen cigar, and placed it calmly into a crystal ashtray.
"You've committed an act of domestic terrorism, Alexander," she said, her voice shaking slightly despite her best efforts. "Breaking into my home with armed men? The military cannot operate on domestic soil. The Posse Comitatus Act—"
"The Posse Comitatus Act does not apply to active counter-espionage investigations involving critical national defense infrastructure," Alexander cut in, his voice cold, devoid of human inflection. "Especially when an enemy of the state is actively tampering with naval nuclear propulsion components."
He gestured to the folder.
"Open it."
Catherine didn't move. Julian, his curiosity warring with his terror, reached out with a trembling hand and flipped open the cardboard cover.
Inside were high-resolution satellite intercepts, wiretap transcripts, and copies of numbered offshore accounts registered under Julian's name in the Cayman Islands. But pinned to the very front was a photographic print of a shipping container seized six hours ago in the Port of Newark.
Inside that container were four hundred structural bolts destined for the *USS Gerald R. Ford* carrier overhaul—all fabricated from cheap, carbon-adulterated Chinese industrial scrap, stamped with forged Miller Consolidated inspection seals.
"That's... that's a clerical error," Julian choked out, his eyes bulging. "I didn't inspect those! The subcontractors—"
"You pocketed forty-two million dollars on that single shipment, Julian," Alexander said. "And when Rosalie discovered the discrepancy in the shipping books during her independent quarterly audit, she confronted you. Didn't she?"
Julian slid down the mantel, collapsing onto his knees, his hands covering his face. "I didn't want them to hurt her! I swear to God, Alexander! Mother said she’d handle it! She said she’d talk to her!"
"Silence, Julian!" Catherine roared, her composure completely shattering. She slammed her hand down on the billiard table. "He has nothing! A few photocopies from an illegal raid! No court in this country will admit evidence gathered at gunpoint by rogue commandos!"
"This isn't an evidence-gathering mission, Catherine," Alexander said. He stepped closer, until his towering frame blocked out the light from the fireplace. "This is an asset seizure. And an execution of jurisdiction."
"What jurisdiction?" she spat. "You're a captain! A field officer! You are nothing!"
The radio on the tactical operator's chest chirped with static.
"Overlord, this is Vanguard Lead. Transport team is entering the hospital perimeter. Local sheriff units have established a roadblock at the emergency dock. They are refusing federal credentials. Vance is claiming county jurisdiction."
Alexander lifted his wrist, speaking into a tactical throat mic hidden beneath his collar. "Hold perimeter. Do not engage until I am on site."
He turned back to Catherine.
"At 6:00 AM, your private medical transport was scheduled to arrive at St. Jude’s to take Rosalie. You thought you could hide her in the Adirondacks, keep her sedated until her brain gave out, and bury the investigation along with her."
Alexander reached out, his hand gripping the back of Catherine’s neck.
The movement was neither rushed nor violent, but the sheer, monstrous strength in his fingers pinned the matriarch instantly. Her silver chignon came undone, strands of hair falling across her terrified, pale face. She tried to pry his fingers off with her manicured hands, but Alexander’s forearm felt like a bar of forged steel.
"You broke twenty-seven of her bones," Alexander whispered, his voice trembling with an ancient, suppressed rage. "You sent three men to torture your own blood in the dark because you loved your private planes and your country clubs more than her life."
"Kill me then," Catherine gasped, spit flying from her lips as she struggled for air. "Do it! Shoot me in my own house! You'll spend the rest of your life in Leavenworth!"
"Death is an extraction, Catherine. It’s an exit strategy," Alexander said softly, his thumb pressing lightly against the carotid artery in her neck until her vision began to swim. "You don't get an exit. You're going to watch everything you built get dismantled, bolt by bolt, dollar by dollar, until the Miller name is synonymous with treason and cowardice."
He released her. Catherine stumbled forward, collapsing onto the velvet wingback chair, coughing violently, clutching her throat.
Alexander turned toward the door.
"Sergeant Miller."
"Sir!" the operator snapped.
"Secure the perimeter. Keep Mrs. Miller and her son in this room under armed guard. Anyone attempts to leave, treat them as hostile combatants attempting to destroy military evidence."
"Understood, Captain."
Alexander didn't look back as he marched out of the chateau, down the grand limestone staircase, and into the courtyard where a matte-black Chevy Suburban sat idling in the rain, its tires grinding the crushed gravel.
The county thought they could play by local rules.

It was time to remind Blackwood County that when an empire falls, it crushes everyone beneath it.
