Chapter 7 - The Mistress’s Dilemma

The private lounge of the Royal Palms Resort was deserted at five in the morning, save for a lone bartender polishing tumblers beneath the dim amber glow of the art-deco fixtures. Outside, the rain had finally stopped, replaced by a biting desert dawn that cast long, gray shadows across the camelback mountain silhouettes.
Chloe Vance sat in the corner booth, wearing an oversized beige trench coat over her evening gown, her hair pulled back into a messy, frantic knot. A untouched glass of club soda sat before her, condensation pooling around its base.
Across from her, Helen Granger sat with a cup of black coffee, her encrypted laptop open on the mahogany table between them.
"Your father’s lawyers have already arrived at the federal building in Phoenix," Helen said, her tone level, devoid of pity, but free of cruelty. "He is currently negotiating a proffer agreement with the Assistant United States Attorney. If he cooperates fully, he will lose his shipping licenses and thirty million dollars in assets, but he will not go to a federal correctional facility."
Chloe looked up, her eyes rimmed in red, her fingers shredding a cocktail napkin into tiny, damp ribbons. "And what happens to me?"
"That depends entirely on what you do in the next twenty minutes, Chloe," Helen said, turning the laptop screen toward the younger woman.
On the screen was a scanned document: an irrevocable trust transfer dated six months earlier. It showed Chloe Vance’s forged signature transferring ownership of Vance Logistics’ primary deep-water berth in Ensenada, Mexico, directly into a holding company controlled by Dustin Osborn.
Chloe gasped, leaning closer to the screen. "That’s... that’s my signature! But I never signed this! I never saw this document in my life!"
"I know," Helen said. "Dustin had a notary in his pocket. He used your relationship to gain access to your father’s corporate seals during your weekend trips to Cabo. You weren't his mistress, Chloe. You were his human shield. If the federal audit had hit Osborn Capital six months ago, Dustin’s paper trail would have pointed the finger directly at you and your father as the masterminds of the maritime evasion scheme."
Chloe pressed her hands against her mouth, a dry, choked sob escaping her throat. "He... he told me he loved me, Mrs. Granger. He told me Maxine was cold, that she was abusive, that she was trying to take his family legacy away from him."
"Men like Dustin do not love, Chloe," Helen said, her voice cutting through the young woman’s self-delusion like a cold blade. "They consume. They find decent, vulnerable people, they hollow them out, and when they are finished, they discard them at a bus terminal in the middle of the night."
Helen leaned forward, her gaze locking onto Chloe’s with the full weight of her three decades in federal prosecution.
"Marcus Kane was at the Osborn estate last night," Helen said.
Chloe flinched, her hands trembling violently. "How... how do you know that?"
"Because Maxine saw him," Helen said. "And because Marcus Kane never leaves a crime scene unless he has personally inspected the cleanup. Chloe, did you see Kane speak to Dustin before the assault?"
Chloe swallowed hard, looking toward the lounge entrance as if expecting armed men to burst through the heavy mahogany doors at any moment. "Kane arrived around eleven o'clock. Dustin was frantic. He was pacing by the pool, drinking scotch straight from the bottle. Kane didn't raise his voice. He took Dustin into the study, and when they came out, Dustin looked... he looked like a dead man walking."
"What did Kane say to him?" Helen pressed, her voice urgent.
"Kane told him, *'The cargo arrives in Ensenada on Friday. If Maxine’s name is still on the corporate filings when the manifest clears customs, you will be in the ground before New Year’s Day.'* And then Kane handed Dustin an iron golf club from the umbrella stand by the front door."
Helen closed her eyes for a brief fraction of a second, her mother’s heart aching with a fresh wave of horror at the calculated, monstrous nature of the crime. Kane hadn't just ordered the hit; he had provided the weapon.
"Chloe," Helen said, reopening her eyes, her gaze steely and resolute. "You are going to walk into the federal courthouse with me in one hour. You are going to sign a sworn affidavit detailing Kane’s presence, his words, and his delivery of the weapon to Dustin."
"He’ll kill me," Chloe wept, shaking her head frantically. "You don't understand who Kane is, Mrs. Granger! My father told me about him years ago! Kane doesn't just hire hitmen—he controls the people who investigate the hitmen! If I testify, I’ll end up in a ditch in the desert!"
Helen reached across the table and seized Chloe’s wrists, her grip so firm and unyielding that the younger woman instantly fell silent.
"Listen to me, Chloe Vance," Helen said, her voice dropping into a low, commanding growl that left no room for doubt. "Kane is powerful because people like your father and Dustin Osborn were cowards who hid behind his shadow. But Kane is still flesh and blood. He operates in the dark because he cannot survive the light of a federal courtroom. I have broken men ten times more dangerous than Marcus Kane, and I will break him before this week is over."
She leaned closer, her eyes boring into Chloe’s soul.
"You have two choices, Chloe. You can walk out of this resort alone, without federal protection, and wait for Kane’s cleaners to find you before you can reach the border. Or you can stand beside me, tell the truth, and help me tear his empire down to the bedrock. You choose now."
Chloe stared at Helen, her chest heaving, the terror in her eyes slowly warring with the realization that the older woman across from her was the only shield she had left in the world.
Slowly, Chloe nodded her head.
"I’ll testify," Chloe whispered.
Helen released her wrists, picked up her phone, and dialed Samuel Varner’s secure extension.
"Samuel," Helen said the moment the line connected. "Get two tactical escort units to the Royal Palms lounge immediately. We have the Kane link. And Samuel?"
"Yeah, Helen?" Varner’s voice sounded tight, stressed, echoing with the background noise of sirens and shouted orders.
"What’s wrong?" Helen asked, her maternal instincts instantly flaring with alarm.
May you like
"It’s Dustin," Varner said, his voice flat with grim exhaustion. "He’s dead, Helen. They found him hanging from the bars in his cell ten minutes ago."
