Chapter 8 - The Press Conference from Hell

The grand auditorium was packed to capacity.
Dozens of camera crews from CNN, Bloomberg, Fox Business, and NBC were arranged in a semi-circle around the polished mahogany podium. The Sterling corporate banner hung behind it, emblazoned with their hollow family motto: *Integrity, Strength, Legacy.*
At 11:58 AM, Robert Sterling walked onto the stage.
He looked immaculate. His silver hair was perfectly coiffed, his charcoal three-piece suit without a wrinkle, the gold Patek Philippe chain glinting against his vest. Beside him stood Richard, wearing a pair of tinted aviator glasses to hide his black eyes, the white splint on his nose gleaming under the harsh stage lights like a badge of dishonor.
The room fell into an expectant, breathless hush.
Robert adjusted the microphones, looked directly into the primary network camera, and assumed his signature expression of grave, statesman-like sorrow.
"Members of the press, esteemed shareholders," Robert began, his voice deep, resonant, and dripping with fabricated emotion. "Today was meant to be a day of peace and family celebration. Instead, the Sterling family finds itself the target of a vicious, coordinated extortion attempt orchestrated by an individual who abused our trust, manipulated our son, and last night committed a heinous act of violence against Richard in our own home."
The reporters began scribbling frantically. Richard lowered his head, feigning wounded dignity.
"This individual, Sarah Sterling," Robert continued, his eyes hardening, "has fabricated fraudulent corporate documents in an attempt to shake down this company for tens of millions of dollars. When her demands were rejected, she physically attacked my son and abducted my wife, Martha, who is currently being held against her will under severe psychological distress. We have already notified federal authorities, and arrest warrants are being executed as I speak."
"That's an interesting story, Robert," my voice rang out.
It didn't come from the audience. It boomed from the auditorium’s state-of-the-art surround sound speakers, amplified at ninety decibels.
Robert froze, his hands gripping the edges of the podium so hard his knuckles turned white.
"What... what is this?" Robert barked into the microphone. "Cut the audio! Security, clear the control booth!"
"You can't cut the audio, Robert," my voice echoed across the hall. "Because I’m not in the control booth. I’m running this feed through the building’s centralized master broadcast network."
Suddenly, the massive fifty-foot LED screen behind Robert flickered.
The corporate logo vanished.
In its place appeared a massive, high-definition photograph of Martha Sterling’s face, taken three hours ago in Trauma Bay 3. The twenty-seven jagged black stitches, the pulped purple flesh around her eye, the deep crimson gash across her temple—magnified fifty feet wide, towering over the podium.
A collective, horrified gasp sucked all the oxygen out of the auditorium. Camera shutters began clicking like a hail of gunfire.
"What you see on the screen," my voice projected with razor-sharp clarity, "is Martha Sterling. Thirty minutes after Robert Sterling smashed a heavy crystal glass into her skull because she served the wrong vintage of wine at Christmas dinner."
"Turn it off! TURN IT OFF!" Richard shrieked, panicking, waving his arms at the AV technicians who were frantically hammering on unresponsive keyboards.
The screen changed again.
Now, it displayed the official hospital medical report, signed by the Chief of Trauma at County General, detailing severe blunt force trauma and physical battery. Next to it appeared the banking transfer records: thirty-four million dollars wired from the Sterling Family Foundation to a shell company in the Cook Islands, specifically labeled *Legal Settlement Reserves - Nondisclosure.*
"For thirty years, Robert Sterling has beaten his wife, silenced his victims, and laundered federal defense money through offshore ghost accounts," I announced to the room and the millions watching the live broadcast nationwide. "And his son, Richard, has stood beside him, covering up the blood and threatening anyone who dared to speak. But the Sterling ledger is closed today."
"Security!" Robert roared, his face turning an apocalyptic shade of purple, veins bulging across his forehead. "Kill the power! Find her! FIND HER!"
At that moment, the heavy double doors at the back of the auditorium burst open.
It wasn't Blackbriar security.
It was twenty agents in dark blue tactical windbreakers, the bold yellow letters on their backs catching the glare of the television lights: **FBI** and **IRS CRIMINAL INVESTIGATION**.
Leading the charge was Special Agent Miller, holding a federal arrest warrant high above his head.

"Robert Sterling! Richard Sterling!" Miller’s voice echoed through the chaotic room. "Step away from the podium! Keep your hands where we can see them!"
