Chapter 7 - The House of Cards

The police officers were professional, calm, and utterly unswayed by Scott’s desperate assertions that this was merely a "civil misunderstanding regarding parenting time."

Officer Martinez, a veteran with a no-nonsense demeanor, reviewed our custody decree right there on my porch.

“Mr. Miller,” Officer Martinez said, handing the papers back to Scott. “Your daughter has clearly stated she feels unsafe accompanying you, and given the domestic disturbance call and the visible distress of the minor, you need to step off this property immediately. If you have custody grievances, file a motion in family court. If you return to this residence today, you will be arrested for criminal trespass.”

Scott left. He didn't look at June as he climbed back into his Explorer and sped away.

By Wednesday morning, Evelyn had filed an emergency ex-parte motion for the immediate suspension of Scott’s visitation rights, alongside a petition for full legal and physical custody. Attached to the filing were three crucial exhibits: the police incident report from our driveway, the formal intake report from DCFS documenting Scott’s emotional abuse of June, and the forensic banking audit of the drained 529 account.

At 2:00 PM on Thursday, Evelyn called me into her office for an urgent update.

Sitting across from Evelyn was a tall, lean man in his late forties wearing wire-rimmed glasses and a charcoal suit.

“Holly, this is Marcus Vance,” Evelyn introduced. “He’s a forensic financial investigator who specializes in matrimonial fraud and asset dissipation. I asked him to run an expedited trace on Scott’s financial footprint over the past eighteen months.”

Marcus opened a thick, tabbed binder.

“Mrs. Miller, what your ex-husband has been doing goes far beyond pocketing babysitting money,” Marcus began without preamble. “Scott didn't just lose fifteen percent of his salary. He was quietly terminated from his partnership six months ago.”

I sat back in my chair, stunned. “Terminated? For what?”

“Misappropriation of client retainer funds,” Marcus said, turning a page. “He settled out of court to avoid criminal disbarment, which required him to repay nearly one hundred and ten thousand dollars to his firm’s escrow account. To come up with that money, Scott took out high-interest merchant cash advances, depleted his own 401(k), and forged your name on the educational hardship withdrawal for June’s college trust.”

The room felt completely silent.

“He’s been floating checks and running a personal Ponzi scheme for over a year,” Marcus continued. “He used June’s identity—specifically her Social Security number—to open two secondary lines of credit in late November. One has an eight-thousand-dollar balance; the other is maxed out at twelve thousand.”

“He took out credit cards in our twelve-year-old daughter’s name?” My voice broke with pure horror.

“We caught it in time,” Evelyn interjected firmly, reaching across the desk to cover my hand. “Marcus flagged them before the delinquency hit credit bureaus. We’ve already submitted identity theft affidavits to the Federal Trade Commission and frozen June’s credit files across all three major reporting agencies. But Holly... this is criminal. This isn't just family court anymore. When Judge Harrison sees this on Friday, Scott is looking at potential grand larceny charges.”

“What about Becca?” I asked, thinking of the pregnant woman sitting in the diner, holding her stomach while her entire life crumbled.

“Becca has retained her own counsel,” Evelyn said. “She filed for legal separation yesterday afternoon. And she has agreed to testify on your behalf at tomorrow’s emergency hearing.”

I looked out the window of Evelyn’s office. The rain had finally stopped, replaced by a crisp, sharp autumn wind that was stripping the last golden leaves from the oak trees along the street.

Scott had spent years convincing everyone—his friends, his new wife, his daughter, and most of all, himself—that he was untouchable. That his charm, his sharp suits, and his gaslighting could keep the truth buried forever.

He had built a house of cards on the backs of the people who trusted him.

And tomorrow morning, the wind was finally going to blow it down.
