Chapter 24 - The Federal Counter-Strike

Before Senator Vance could finish his sentence, the heavy silence of the mountain valley was shattered by a low, mechanical thunder that didn't come from the road.
*Thump-thump-thump-thump.*
The rhythmic, deafening roar of twin-turbine helicopter blades tore through the low-hanging clouds above the ridge. Instantly, the canopy of oak and pine trees whipped sideways in a violent downdraft of wind and autumn leaves. Senator Vance’s smug expression flickered, his eyes darting upward as a massive, matte-black UH-60 Black Hawk military helicopter bearing no standard markings—flying at a razor-sharp altitude of barely two hundred feet—dipped over the tree line and began circling the farmhouse in a wide, aggressive tactical orbit.
"What is that?" one of the Senator's bodyguards yelled over the deafening roar, his hand flying to his earpiece as he struggled to maintain his footing against the rotor wash. "Sir, we're losing satellite telemetry! Communications are completely jammed!"
I didn't look up. I kept my eyes locked on Senator Vance, watching as the absolute certainty in his face evaporated, replaced by a sudden, cold panic. He reached frantically into his pocket for a secure satellite communicator, but before his fingers could grasp the device, a blinding flash of high-intensity white light erupted from the access road behind his motorcade.
Three matte-green federal tactical vehicles—identical to the ones from the Baltimore raid—came tearing around the bend, their heavy steel bumpers smashing directly into the rear quarter-panels of the Senator’s trailing Escalades, pinning them instantly against the steep embankment of the creek.
The doors of the leading tactical vehicle flew open, and Special Agent Miller stepped out, his dark suit jacket whipped wildly by the wind, a tactical Remington shotgun resting casually in the crook of his arm. Behind him, a dozen armed federal marshals spilled out into the mud, their assault rifles raised and locked in a textbook bounding formation that surrounded the Senator's security detail before they could even draw their weapons.
"Federal Marshals! Drop your weapons! Nobody move!" Miller’s voice boomed across the valley with absolute authority.
Senator Vance’s bodyguards looked at their boss, their hands hovering indecisively over their holsters. But the sight of twelve federal assault rifles trained directly on their chests made the decision for them. One by one, they slowly raised their hands and stepped back from their vehicles, letting their sidearms hit the gravel with heavy, metallic clatters.
Senator Vance’s face drained of color, his jaw clenching so hard a muscle twitched violently in his cheek. He turned his venomous glare from Miller back to me, his voice trembling with suppressed rage.
"You arrogant little bitch," Vance hissed, stepping forward as if he wanted to strike me. "You have no idea what forces you're meddling with. This isn't just about real estate. That valley holds classified military communications infrastructure vital to national security. If you expose this, you're committing treason against the United States!"
"No, Senator," I said, stepping right up to him, my eyes burning with the cold fire of vindication. "Treason is when a man sworn to protect the Constitution uses his office to steal land from his own citizens, frame an innocent family, and murder the truth to cover his tracks."
I reached into my tactical vest, pulled out the heavy lead-wrapped foil package David had handed me, and tossed it squarely onto the hood of the Escalade right in front of him. The foil tore open, spilling out the original 2004 land grant document alongside the decrypted server logs from *Apex Horizon*.
"Special Agent Miller," I called out without breaking eye contact with the Senator. "Place Senator Richard Vance under citizen's arrest for grand larceny, wire fraud, forgery of federal documents, and interstate conspiracy under the Color of Law."

Miller walked forward, a grim, satisfied smile playing across his lips. He pulled a pair of heavy steel handcuffs from his tactical belt, stepped directly behind the stunned Senator, and slammed the cuffs onto his wrists with a sharp, metallic *CLICK*.
"Senator Richard Vance, you have the right to remain silent," Miller recited smoothly as the Senator struggled uselessly against the cuffs. "Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of federal law."
