Chapter 9 - The Decryption

The answer came twenty-four hours later, in a secluded office three floors beneath the city’s forensic crime division.

Detective Miller had called Liam down to the precinct under strict confidentiality. I refused to stay behind. Dressed in dark sunglasses, a wide-brimmed hat, and a silk scarf wrapped carefully around my bandages, I walked through the police station flanked by Liam and our private investigator, Marcus.

Marcus was an ex-military intelligence specialist with skin the color of worn mahogany and eyes that missed nothing. He set his rugged laptop on the steel interrogation table, linking it to the precinct’s secure server.

“The flash drive was protected by triple-layer military encryption,” Marcus explained, his fingers dancing across the mechanical keyboard with practiced speed. “Whoever configured this drive didn't want standard hackers getting in. But they made one mistake: the metadata on the backup partition was tied to a local server in the industrial district. An address on Waterfront Lane.”

“Connor’s warehouse,” Liam breathed, his hands gripping the back of my chair.

“Not just a warehouse,” Marcus said, hitting *Enter*.

The projector screen on the wall flickered to life, illuminating the dark room with cascading green columns of financial data, shipping manifests, and high-resolution surveillance photos.

“For the past two years, your brother Connor and his wife Paige haven't just been selling high-end real estate,” Marcus revealed, pointing to a series of invoices. “They’ve been running an illicit processing and distribution hub for an international black-market cosmetic and chemical syndicate. They were taking untested, industrial-grade compounds—substances banned in Europe and the United States—rebranding them as luxury 'regenerative serums,' and distributing them to underground medical spas catering to ultra-wealthy clients.”

“And the pink liquid?” I asked, my heart hammering against my ribs.

“A byproduct,” Marcus said grimly. “A concentrated extraction of stabilized fluorinated acid used to break down cellular structures in experimental bio-cosmetics. Highly toxic. Highly illegal. A single vial of *Rose-7* on the black market sells for forty thousand dollars. It’s used primarily in untraceable corporate assassinations because it mimics an accidental caustic spill.”

“My father,” Liam said, his voice barely above a whisper.

Marcus clicked a button, bringing up an old police report from three years ago.

“Your father, Arthur Vance, was auditing commercial properties for the state tax commission,” Marcus said softly, looking at Liam with deep sympathy. “He discovered that Connor’s warehouse was consuming ten times the electrical power and hazardous waste disposal permits of a standard storage facility. Arthur went to Connor to confront him, giving him twenty-four hours to turn himself in.”

“And two days later, Dad suffered a 'fatal stroke,'” Liam whispered, his face turning gray.

“Not a stroke,” Marcus said, pulling up an autopsy addendum that had been buried in the county archives. “Arthur died of acute pulmonary edema and sudden systemic hypocalcemia. The exact physiological markers caused by minor exposure to *Rose-7*. They didn't just kill him, Liam. They murdered your father to protect their operation.”

The room went dead silent.

The horror in the air was so thick it was suffocating. Connor and Paige hadn't just been spoiled, jealous relatives acting out of petty spite at a child’s birthday party. They were sociopaths running an empire of poison and blood, living in luxury bought with the life of Liam’s own father.

“Why Miles’ cake?” I asked, my voice shaking with sudden, terrifying comprehension. “Why did Paige come to my house and kick that cake?”

Marcus leaned over the table, his eyes dead serious.

“Because Arthur’s personal safety deposit box key was missing from his estate inventory after he died,” Marcus said. “Connor and Paige believed Arthur left the backup audit files with you, Nora. Paige came to your house to search your home office while everyone was outside on the lawn. When she couldn't find the key, she walked outside, saw your happy family, and snapped.”

“And then I burned her bag,” I whispered.

“And inside that bag,” Marcus finished, “was the only master hardware token that could access their offshore accounts in Zurich. You didn't just burn an eight-hundred-dollar purse, Nora. You burned their escape hatch. You burned their twenty-million-dollar empire.”

Before anyone could speak, Liam’s phone buzzed violently on the table.

It was an automated alert from Miles’ elementary school security network.
