Chapter 3 - The Served Reality

The day after Christmas arrived gray and bitter, with a light sheet of sleet tapping against the windowpanes like nervous fingers.

At 8:30 AM, my family’s group chat was already pinging incessantly.

My mother, Margaret, had sent three photos of leftover glazed ham, followed by a pointed passive-aggressive message: Some people missed a lovely morning breakfast because of yesterday’s little overreactions. Family forgives, Hannah. You should bring Olivia over so she can apologize to Madison for running off.

I didn't type a word. I simply archived the thread, muted notifications, and poured myself a cup of dark roast coffee.

Across town, at 114 Whispering Pines, the morning was unfolding very differently.

Monica was lounging on her oversized velvet sectional—a luxury piece she had purchased with money she claimed she didn't have for rent—wearing her monogrammed fleece robe and sipping a mimosa. Her husband, Todd, was sleeping off a heavy hangover in the master suite upstairs, while Madison was busy unboxing her third pile of holiday gifts in the living room.

At precisely 9:15 AM, the front doorbell chimed.

Monica set her glass down, an irritated sigh escaping her lips. "Todd! Did you order another gaming console on my card?" she yelled up the stairs, receiving only a muffled groan in response.

Assuming it was an Amazon driver delivering late holiday packages, Monica tied her robe sash and pulled open the heavy oak door.

Standing on the porch was not a delivery driver in a blue vest.

It was a tall, stern-faced man wearing a gray overcoat, holding a clipboard and a legal-sized manila envelope sealed with red tamper-evident tape.

"Monica Sterling?" the man asked, his voice flat, professional, and entirely devoid of warmth.

Monica blinked, pulling her robe tighter against the icy draft. "Yes? Who are you? If you’re selling solar panels, there’s a neighborhood covenant against—"

"I am a licensed process server for the Commonwealth," the man interrupted cleanly, extending the heavy envelope toward her. "I am serving you with a formal Legal Notice to Vacate and Demand for Immediate Possession on behalf of the deed-holder, Hannah Vance."

Monica’s brain stalled. The mimosa buzz seemed to evaporate in an instant, replaced by a cold prickle of annoyance.

"What is this, a practical joke?" she scoffed, refusing to touch the envelope. "Hannah Vance is my sister. This is my house."

"The legal deed on file with the County Recorder identifies Hannah Marie Vance as the sole fee-simple property owner," the server replied smoothly. He lowered the envelope onto the small entryway table just inside the threshold, took out a digital camera, and snapped a photo of the envelope resting inside her doorframe, capturing Monica’s bewildered face in the background.

"You have been formally served under State Property Code Section 55-225," the man stated, checking his watch. "You have exactly thirty calendar days from today's date to completely vacate the premises, remove all personal property, and return all keys to the offices of Carter & Sterling Legal Associates. Failure to do so will result in an immediate filing of an Unlawful Detainer action and court-ordered eviction by the County Sheriff."

"Wait! You can't just leave that here!" Monica shrieked, her voice suddenly climbing into a shrill register. "I have a child! You can't evict someone the day after Christmas! That's illegal!"

"All legal notices are outlined inside, ma'am. Have a good day."

The server turned on his heel, walked down the salt-crusted steps, got into his sedan, and drove away into the gray morning.

Monica stood in the doorway, the freezing wind whipping her robe around her bare ankles. Her heart was pounding against her ribs like a trapped bird.

She snatched the envelope off the table, tore through the red seal with trembling fingers, and pulled out the crisp, white legal stationery stamped with the embossed gold logo of Carter & Sterling.

NOTICE OF TERMINATION OF TENANCY AT WILLTO: Monica Sterling, Todd Sterling, and All Other Occupants.FROM: Hannah Marie Vance, Sole Legal Property Owner.

Her eyes scanned the bold lines, skipping frantically over the legal citations until they landed on the final paragraph:

...be advised that the non-contractual, gratuitous occupancy previously extended to you has been irrevocably revoked. You are hereby ordered to surrender quiet and peaceful possession of 114 Whispering Pines no later than January 26th at 5:00 PM. Any unauthorized structural alterations, unpaid utility liens, or intentional damages to the real property will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of civil and criminal law.

The paper fluttered in her shaking hands.

"Todd!" she screamed at the top of her lungs, turning back into the house, her voice cracking with fury. "TODD! GET DOWN HERE RIGHT NOW! YOUR SISTER-IN-LAW HAS LOST HER GODDAMN MIND!"
