Chapter 3 - The Ghost with a Name Tag

The Coronado VFW hall was packed with brass, medals, and high-dollar catering.
The air smelled of single-malt Scotch, expensive cigars drifting in from the patio, and the heavy starch of dress uniforms. Banners hung from the rafters: *CONGRATULATIONS LIEUTENANT COMMANDER CALLAHAN*. A four-piece jazz combo played softly in the corner, paid for by the Callahan family booster fund.
Erin arrived at 1800, walking through the heavy double oak doors into the foyer.
The crowd was a sea of navy blue and gold. Commanders, captains, senior chiefs, and local defense contractors stood in tight, laughing circles. Arthur Callahan was in his element, holding court near the open bar with a group of retired flag officers, his chest puffed out, a tumbler of bourbon in his hand.
Near the entrance, a long table was draped in white linen. Behind it sat Mrs. Gable, the wife of a retired master chief and the self-appointed gatekeeper of Coronado naval social life.
Erin approached the table.
"Good evening," Erin said politely. "I'm checking in."
Mrs. Gable adjusted her cat-eye reading glasses, looking up with a brisk, efficient smile that immediately curdled as her eyes ran over Erin’s attire. Erin was wearing a modest dark navy sheath dress—clean, well-fitted, but distinctly lacking the diamond brooches or naval crest pins worn by the other women in the room.
"Name, please?" Mrs. Gable asked, flipping through a thick leather binder filled with laser-printed place cards and embossed badges.
"Erin Callahan."
Mrs. Gable’s manicured finger ran down the *C* section.
*Callahan, Arthur (Capt, Ret.)*
*Callahan, Helen*
*Callahan, Lucas (Lt., USN)*
*Callahan, Caitlyn (Lt. Cdr. Select, USN)*
*Callahan, Mark*
*Callahan, Sarah*
Mrs. Gable flipped the page. She flipped it back. She frowned, tapping her pen against the paper.
"Are you sure you’re on the list, dear? Are you someone’s plus-one?"
"I’m Caitlyn’s sister," Erin said calmly.
Mrs. Gable’s eyebrows shot up. "Caitlyn’s sister? I’ve known Arthur and Helen for twenty years. Caitlyn has a brother, Lucas. I didn't know there was an older sister."
"There is."
Mrs. Gable sighed, clearly annoyed by the administrative irregularity. She rummaged beneath the table, pulling out a cardboard box filled with leftover office supplies. She produced a peeling, adhesive name tag—the red-bordered kind that said *HELLO, MY NAME IS*—and tossed a half-dried black Sharpie onto the table.
"Well, nobody ordered a custom badge for an Erin Callahan," Mrs. Gable said coldly. "You can write your name on that and stick it to your dress. Cash bar is to the right. Don't crowd the receiving line; the commodore is arriving shortly."
Erin picked up the marker.
She pulled the cap off. With steady, unhurried strokes, she wrote **ERIN** in block capital letters in the corner of the sticker. She peeled off the wax backing and pressed the paper sticker against the silk lapel of her dress.
It looked ridiculous. A cheap, five-cent paper sticker in a room filled with gold-plated nametags and engraved lapel pins.
She walked into the main hall.
Immediately inside the entrance, the Callahan family had erected an elaborate display: the "Heritage of Service" wall. Mounted on black velvet display easels were four large, gilded frames:
1. Captain Arthur Callahan, commanding officer, USS *Valley Forge*.
2. Ensign Helen Vance Callahan, Navy Nurse Corps, 1982.
3. Lieutenant Lucas Callahan, Coastal Riverine Squadron.
4. Lieutenant Commander Caitlyn Callahan, USS *Spruance*.
Between Lucas and Caitlyn, there was a visible, eighteen-inch gap on the velvet board. The fabric was slightly faded in that rectangular space, where another frame had clearly hung years ago before being pried loose with a pair of pliers.
"Erin!" a high, melodic voice called out.
Caitlyn was walking toward her, surrounded by three junior officers in dress whites. She held a glass of champagne, her face flushed with pride.
"You actually came," Caitlyn said, stopping three paces away. She glanced down at the paper sticker peeling slightly off Erin’s chest and let out a soft giggle. "Oh, no. Did Mrs. Gable make you wear that? That’s so tragic."
The junior officers chuckled on cue.
"It works," Erin said.
"Everyone, this is my sister, Erin," Caitlyn said, waving her hand with lazy dismissiveness toward her entourage. "She was just telling us last night how she wanders around doing... what was it again? Overseas volunteer work? Teaching English or something?"
"Something like that," Erin murmured.
One of the lieutenants, a smug young man with a freshly shaved mustache, smirked. "Must be relaxing. While the real Navy is dealing with the South China Sea, you’re getting a tan in the tropics. Good for you, ma'am. Takes all kinds to support the country, I guess."
Erin looked at the young lieutenant. Her eyes locked onto his with an intensity so sharp, so lethal, that the man’s smile froze. A primal instinct deep in his brain—the ancient, hardwired mammalian recognition of an apex predator—made him take a half-step back. The air around Erin seemed to drop ten degrees.
Before the silence could stretch, Arthur appeared beside them, his hand heavy on Caitlyn’s shoulder.
"Caitlyn, Admiral Harris’s chief of staff just walked in. He wants to meet you before the dinner starts," Arthur said, ignoring Erin completely. "Don't waste time chatting with the civilians. Let’s go."
"Right behind you, Dad," Caitlyn said, turning her back on Erin without another word.
Erin stood alone beside the velvet easel.
In the pocket of her blazer, a subtle, rhythmic vibration hummed against her thigh. It wasn't her civilian cell phone.
It was the encrypted SAT-device.
She stepped out of the hall, slipping into the quiet, dim corridor that led to the emergency exits. She pulled the slim black receiver from her pocket and pressed her thumb against the biometric pad.
The screen lit up with green phosphor text:
**FLASH TRAFFIC // PRIORITY ONE**
**ORIG: CNO SPECIAL OPERATIONS / WARCOM**
**TO: CALLAHAN, E. - RADM (SELECT) / SPECWAR COM**
**SUBJ: UNANNOUNCED ONSITE VISIT - CORONADO NAVAL AMPHIBIOUS BASE**
**FLAG ESCORT EN ROUTE TO RECOGNITION CEREMONY 1300.**
**FOUR-STAR ATTENDANCE CONFIRMED. BE ADVISED.**
Erin stared at the screen for four seconds.
Her thumb moved over the keypad, typing a brief, two-word reply:
*ACKNOWLEDGED. OUT.*
May you like
She locked the device, slipped it back into her pocket, and walked back into the hall to watch her family celebrate their greatness.
