Chapter 4 - The False Bloodline

Eleanor's eyes narrowed to slits as she saw me approach, flanked by Arthur Sterling and two armed security operators.
"You insolent little tramp," Eleanor hissed, stepping forward without an ounce of fear, entirely consumed by her arrogance. "You think you can bring hired mercenaries to intimidate me? This house was built with Whitmore family money! My late husband laid the cornerstone! You have no legal standing here!"
"Actually, Eleanor," Sterling stepped forward, unfolding a deed bearing the gold seal of the Los Angeles County Recorder’s Office, "David purchased this parcel under an LLC in 2021. Two months ago, he transferred one hundred percent ownership to Sarah Whitmore as a sole and separate property gift. Your name does not appear on any deed, mortgage, or tax document."
"That deed is invalid!" Chloe screamed, rushing to her mother’s side. "David was under duress! She seduced him, she baby-trapped him, and then she cheated on him! We have the DNA test! Show them the test, Mother!"
"The test your mother purchased for two hundred and fifty thousand dollars?" Sterling said, his voice ringing across the courtyard.
At that moment, a second car drove up the hill—a sleek unmarked sedan. Out stepped General Marcus Vance, my commanding officer from Army Intelligence, accompanied by a female captain carrying a military laptop case.
When General Vance walked up, his silver stars gleaming on his collar, even Eleanor’s brazen attitude suffered a blow.
"Sarah," General Vance said, nodding to me with deep respect. "We intercepted the technician, Marcus Vance. No relation to me, thank God. He broke under interrogation in less than ten minutes."
Eleanor's jaw tightened. "Interrogation? You have no jurisdiction over civilians!"
"When a civilian laboratory falsifies an official medical record to defraud an active United States Army Intelligence Commander during a state of bereavement, Title 10 gives the Department of Defense broad investigative purview regarding national security vulnerabilities," General Vance said coldly.
The female captain opened the laptop and pressed play.
A high-definition video appeared on the screen. It showed the trembling, sweating technician, Marcus Vance, sitting in a stark interrogation room at the federal detention center.
*"It was Mrs. Eleanor Whitmore!"* the man blubbered on screen, tears streaming down his face. *"She called me last Thursday! She said her son’s wife had prenatal blood drawn at our affiliated clinic. She paid me fifty thousand down, and two hundred thousand wired to Grand Cayman! She gave me the exact phrasing: zero point zero zero percent probability! I never even ran the blood! The real sample is still in cold storage! David Whitmore is the biological father! The probability was 99.998%! I swear to God, I have the real printout on my encrypted drive!"*
The courtyard fell dead silent. The locksmiths and moving van drivers began backing away slowly toward their vehicles, realizing they were accessories to a massive federal crime.
Chloe looked at her mother, terror finally dawning in her eyes. "Mother... you told me the test was real! You told me she actually cheated!"
Eleanor slapped Chloe across the face with a brutal, resounding crack.
"Shut up, you idiot!" Eleanor snarled, losing all composure, her refined society mask completely dissolving into pure, unhinged rage.
Eleanor turned back to me, her teeth bared like a cornered animal. "So what? So the baby is his! It doesn't matter! David’s car didn't plunge off that cliff by accident, Sarah. He was reckless. He was weak. Just like his pathetic father! And you won't survive long enough to spend a single penny of his estate!"
Sterling’s eyes flashed dangerously. "Are you making a terroristic threat against a federal officer, Mrs. Whitmore?"
"I'm telling her the truth," Eleanor spat, stepping back toward her Maybach. "David is dead. Whitmore Enterprises belongs to the board. The emergency board meeting is tomorrow morning at nine. I hold the voting proxy for fifty-one percent of the legacy shares. You can keep this house, Sarah. But tomorrow morning, I am stripping your husband’s company down to the bone and selling every asset to foreign buyers. You and your bastard will have nothing!"
With that, Eleanor shoved Chloe into the passenger seat, slammed the door, and the Maybach tore down the driveway, leaving plumes of burning rubber behind.
I stood there, feeling the sudden cold sea breeze pierce through my coat. A sharp, violent cramp suddenly ripped through my lower abdomen.
I gasped, stumbling forward.
"Sarah!" Sterling caught my arm before I hit the stone.

"The baby..." I choked out, a sharp wave of agony doubling me over. "Arthur... it's happening. The baby is coming."
