Chapter 6 - The Allies in the Shadows

With Julianne on our side, our defensive bunker transformed into a tactical war room.
For the next four hours, Julianne, Sarah, and I cross-referenced the transactions from my stolen marital savings with the historical fraud records Julianne had preserved.
The pattern was unmistakable. Marcus wasn't just a spineless son obeying a domineering mother; he was a co-conspirator. Every wire transfer from our joint account into Aegis Holdings had been signed digitally using Marcus’s private security token.
"He took out a second mortgage on your family home last November," Julianne pointed out, tapping a lien registry document on the laptop screen.
My breath caught. "What? That house was purchased with my inheritance from my grandmother!"
"He forged your digital signature on the equity loan," Sarah said, pulling up the county clerk's filing. "Three hundred and fifty thousand dollars. He liquidated your equity to pay off Evelyn’s delinquent property taxes on the retail center on 4th Street."
I felt physically sick. The man I had shared a bed with for six years—the man who kissed our daughter goodnight and promised to protect our family—had systematically gutted our financial life, leaving Lily and me on the brink of total destitution.
"Why?" I asked, my voice breaking. "Why would he destroy his own child’s future?"
"Because Marcus has never existed as an independent human being," Julianne said bitterly. "Evelyn conditioned him from birth to believe that her survival is his only purpose. She gives him an allowance, an executive title, and a luxury car, but she owns his soul. If she goes down, he believes he ceases to exist."
Before we could finish reviewing the files, Sarah’s desk phone rang again.
"Sarah, Marcus Hayes and his attorney, Preston Sterling, are downstairs in the lobby. They’re demanding an emergency meeting with Maya."
Sarah smiled coldly. "Preston Sterling. Evelyn’s personal attack dog. Tell them we’ll see them in Conference Room B in five minutes."
Sarah turned to me and Julianne.
"Julianne, stay in this back office with Lily. Keep the door locked. Maya, put your armor on. Marcus thinks you’re still the broken, terrified woman who fled the restaurant in tears. Let’s show him who he’s actually dealing with."
I walked over to the mirror hanging on Sarah’s office wall. I straightened the collar of my simple black blouse, pulled my hair back into a sleek, severe ponytail, and wiped away any trace of emotion from my face.
The sweet, submissive wife who spent two years apologizing for existing in Evelyn Hayes’s presence was dead.

She died the second that woman’s hand hit my daughter’s cheek.
