Chapter 6 - The Gathering of Vultures

The sun rose over Manhattan in a brilliant, cruel blaze of gold and blue.

At 8:15 AM, a sleek black Mercedes Maybach pulled up to the curb outside the Vance Logistics corporate headquarters—a gleaming forty-story monolith of dark granite and tinted glass overlooking the Hudson River.

Grant Sterling stepped out of the vehicle, radiating the effortless arrogance of an emperor arriving for his coronation.

He wore an Italian bespoke navy three-piece suit, a silk Hermes tie, and a Patek Philippe watch that Arthur Vance had received for his twentieth year in business—a watch Grant had stolen from my father's safe three days after the funeral.

Beside him, stepping out in high stiletto heels, was Vanessa Drake. She wore a tailored ivory pantsuit that sharply contrasted with the deep luster of my mother's natural pearl necklace. Her lips were painted blood-red, her blonde hair coiffed into an immaculate updo.

"Smile for the cameras, darling," Vanessa murmured under her breath, noticing the small cluster of financial journalists waiting near the glass revolving doors. "Today, you become the undisputed king of New York logistics."

"I was always the king," Grant muttered smoothly, turning to flash a practiced, confident smile at a photographer from *Bloomberg*. "I just had to wait for the old man’s shadow to fade."

They walked through the lobby, security guards bowing their heads in deference. Grant didn't bother acknowledging any of them. For years, he had been forced to act polite, forced to play the devoted son-in-law, forced to defer to Arthur’s veteran managers.

That ended today.

As they stepped into the private executive elevator, Vanessa pressed the button for the thirty-fifth floor—the Grand Boardroom.

"Did the hospital call?" she asked, checking her lipstick in the elevator's mirrored wall.

"The head of nursing tried to reach me at six," Grant scoffed, waving a dismissive hand. "Said Olivia had been moved to a high-dependency trauma unit. Probably went into septic shock from the burn. Frankly, if she slips into a coma, it saves us the trouble of paying off the conservatorship judge."

The elevator chimed, the doors sliding open to reveal the executive floor.

The boardroom was already buzzing with nervous energy. The room was dominated by a thirty-foot walnut conference table surrounded by leather executive chairs. Floor-to-ceiling windows offered panoramic views of the harbor.

At the head of the table sat Richard Hayes, the seventy-one-year-old turncoat board member who had secretly accepted a three-million-dollar offshore advisory contract from Apex Global to betray my father’s legacy. Sitting around him were nine other board members, their expressions a mix of grim complicity and nervous anticipation.

In the far corner of the room stood two representatives from Apex Global Shipping, dressed in severe gray suits, holding leather briefcases containing the asset liquidation contracts.

"Grant," Hayes said, rising to shake his hand with a tight, oily smile. "You look ready."

"I am more than ready, Richard," Grant said, taking his seat at the head of the table—my father’s seat. Vanessa pulled up a leather chair directly behind him, crossing her slender legs, her posture radiating smug dominance.

"Where is Marcus Kane?" one of the older board members, an elderly woman named Evelyn Vance, my father's distant cousin, asked sharply. "Under company bylaws, the general counsel must be present to verify proxy authorizations."

"Marcus Kane has been relieved of his duties as corporate counsel," Grant announced coldly, leaning his forearms onto the polished wood. "Effective seven o'clock this morning, under my authority as temporary trustee of Olivia Vance’s estate."

Evelyn gasped. "You can't do that without a full board vote!"

"I have the majority proxy, Evelyn," Grant snapped, his voice dropping into that familiar, terrifying register of absolute control. "Olivia is currently non-responsive in intensive care. Due to the catastrophic nature of her physical and psychological deterioration following her accident, she has legally assigned all executive voting rights to me as her lawful spouse. The medical certificates and proxy filings have already been submitted to the state registrar."

Grant clicked his fingers, and his assistant began distributing thick, leather-bound folders to each board member.

"Before you is the restructuring proposal," Grant declared, his voice echoing off the soundproof glass. "We are liquidating the non-performing maritime cold-storage assets to Apex Global for two hundred and eighty million dollars. This will streamline Vance Logistics into a pure freight-forwarding operation, cutting our overhead by sixty percent."

"This isn't restructuring!" Evelyn said, her voice shaking with rage. "This is gutting the company! Those cold-storage lines are the heart of Arthur's empire! They generate seventy percent of our recurring revenue!"

"Arthur Vance is dead!" Grant bellowed, slamming his palm down on the walnut table with such force that the crystal water glasses rattled. "And his daughter is a broken, bedridden invalid who couldn't manage a lemonade stand! I run this company now! And if you don't like the direction of the new board, Evelyn, you are welcome to resign your seat before I vote you off it!"

Silence descended upon the boardroom. No one dared to breathe. Hayes nodded in agreement, signaling the Apex representatives to open their pens.

"Now," Grant said, pulling a Montblanc pen from his breast pocket, his lips curving into a triumphant, predatory grin. "Let us begin the roll-call vote. Director Hayes?"

"Aye," Hayes said immediately.

"Director Vance?"

"Never!" Evelyn spat.

"One nay, one aye. Director Miller?"

"Aye," another turncoat mumbled.

Grant smirked. "That makes two. And with my fifty-one percent majority proxy, the vote is already legally concluded. The motion carries. Bring forward the Apex contracts."

The Apex representative slid the thick legal document across the table. Grant picked up the pen, uncapping it with a flourish.

"To a new era," Vanessa whispered behind him, her fingers lovingly caressing the pearl necklace.

Grant touched the nib of the pen to the signature line.

May you like

And at that exact second, the heavy, double-reinforced brass doors of the boardroom swung inward with an earth-shattering crash.
