Chapter 7 - Vanessa's True Colors

By 4:00 PM, the emergency hearing before Judge Holbrook in Stamford Superior Court was over before it even began.
Preston Blake, Daniel’s high-priced corporate defense attorney, withdrew his emergency motion to dissolve the asset freeze after spending thirty minutes reviewing the evidence of forgery and offshore transfers Victoria had submitted to the court clerk. Blake knew that pushing for a hearing would only result in Judge Holbrook referring Daniel directly for immediate criminal arrest.
Instead, Daniel found himself sitting in the corner booth of an obscure, dim bar on the outskirts of Port Chester, New York—well away from the prying eyes of Greenwich society.
He was on his fourth scotch.
His phone had been ringing continuously for six hours. The board of directors had formally locked him out of the company email servers. His corporate credit cards had been declined when he tried to pay for his hotel room. And the local news outlets were already running headlines: *GREENWICH INVESTMENT HEIR ACCUSED OF MILLIONS IN FRAUD AFTER MIDNIGHT EVICTION OF FAMILY.*
The door of the bar opened, and Vanessa Reed walked in.
She wasn't wearing her silk robes or her radiant designer dresses. She wore dark sunglasses, a trench coat, and flat shoes, carrying a single leather weekend bag.
Daniel sat up, a desperate glimmer of hope cutting through his drunken haze. "Vanessa! Thank God. Did you talk to your attorneys? Did they clear the SEC subpoena?"
Vanessa slid into the opposite side of the booth, not bothering to take off her sunglasses. Her demeanor was cold, distant, and completely devoid of the sultry warmth she had displayed twenty-four hours earlier.
"The SEC has frozen all of Apex Horizon’s domestic accounts, Daniel," she said flatly. "The foreign investors have revoked our advisory charter. The firm is dead."
Daniel swallowed hard, reaching across the sticky table to take her hand. Vanessa pulled it back instantly, resting it on her lap.
"It’s okay," Daniel pleaded, his voice cracking. "We can fight this. My family still has immense private equity in foreign real estate that Rachel doesn't know about. Once the divorce is finalized, I can negotiate a cash settlement, cut Rachel a check to shut her up, and we can take our capital to Dubai or Singapore. We can rebuild together."
Vanessa let out a sharp, incredulous laugh that cut Daniel like a razor.
"Rebuild? With you?" She shook her head, looking at him with undisguised pity and disgust. "Daniel, are you truly that delusional?"
Daniel blinked, stunned. "Vanessa... what are you talking about? I sacrificed everything for you! I put the Parker Heritage Trust on the line to save your fund! I threw Rachel and the boys out because you wanted that house!"
"You didn't do it for me, Daniel," Vanessa said, her voice dripping with ice. "You did it because you're a weak, insecure little boy who wanted to pretend he was a titan of finance. You were desperate for my validation because your grandfather and your mother made you feel like an incompetent failure your entire life."
"I loved you!" Daniel choked out, tears finally welling in his bloodshot eyes.
"And that was your biggest mistake," Vanessa said coldly. "Business is business, Daniel. I used you for your family's balance sheet. That’s all you ever were: a bridge loan in a Brioni suit."
She pulled an envelope from her purse and tossed it onto the table between them.
"What is this?" Daniel whispered.
"A copy of the proffer agreement my criminal defense attorney just submitted to the United States Attorney’s Office in Manhattan," Vanessa replied smoothly. "In exchange for immunity from prosecution on the wire fraud charges, I have agreed to provide full state’s evidence regarding your unauthorized transfers and the forgery of your wife's signature."
Daniel’s breath caught in his throat. His entire world tilted on its axis. "You... you're turning state's evidence against me?"
"I’m saving myself, Daniel," Vanessa said, sliding out of the booth. "You should have listened to your wife. She was always ten times smarter than you. Goodbye, Daniel."

Daniel sat frozen in the booth as the woman he had destroyed his family for walked out the door, into a waiting black car, and out of his life forever.
