Chapter 6 - The Night of the Gala (The Prelude)

The Plaza Hotel gleamed like a fortress of gold against the dark Manhattan night. Limousines and Maybachs stretched down Grand Army Plaza, their headlights cutting through the gentle mist. Paparazzi flashes exploded in blinding bursts along the red carpet, illuminating diamonds, silks, and the polished smiles of the city’s ruling class.
Inside the presidential suite on the seventh floor, Ryan Caldwell stood before a full-length mirror, adjusting the silk lapels of his custom tuxedo.
Vanessa Hart stepped up behind him, wrapping her slender arms around his waist. She looked striking in a backless crimson gown that clung to every curve, her dark hair swept up to showcase the stolen five-strand pearl necklace with the sapphire clasp.
"You look like a king," Vanessa purred, resting her chin on his broad shoulder, admiring their reflection in the glass.
Ryan smiled, a look of unbridled triumph in his eyes. He turned around, cupping her face in his hands, admiring the diamond studs in her ears.
"Tonight, we close Northstar," Ryan said, his voice brimming with adrenaline. "By midnight, Caldwell Holdings becomes an eight-billion-dollar enterprise. Salvatore Moretti will be sidelined, and Claire will be tucked safely away in Connecticut where she can't make a sound."
Vanessa let out a soft laugh. "Did her lawyers give you any trouble today?"
"Her lawyers don't have a prayer," Ryan scoffed, checking his gold Patek Philippe. "Arthur’s medical evaluation gave us full emergency conservatorship. Even if Claire woke up tomorrow and tried to contest it, the courts won't touch her testimony for six months. By then, the money is fully integrated into Northstar."
He leaned down and kissed her lips—a hard, possessive kiss.
"Are the photographers ready downstairs?" he asked.
"Every society desk in the city is here," Vanessa answered, adjusting his bow tie. "The New York Times, Bloomberg, Vogue. When you invite me onto the stage during the keynote, they’ll have the photograph on every front page tomorrow morning."
"Good," Ryan murmured, offering her his arm. "Let’s show them who runs this city."
Downstairs, the grand ballroom of the Plaza was a sea of black ties, flowing silk, and glittering crystal. Towering floral arrangements of white orchids and silver branches reached toward the gilded ceilings. Four hundred of Manhattan’s elite—hedge fund titans, real estate moguls, senators, and socialites—chatted over vintage champagne, the air humming with anticipation.
At eight-thirty, the orchestra paused, and the master of ceremonies stepped up to the podium.
"Ladies and gentlemen," the announcer’s voice boomed through the ballroom. "Please welcome the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Caldwell Holdings, Mr. Ryan Caldwell, accompanied by the Director of Investor Relations, Ms. Vanessa Hart!"
The double doors parted.
Ryan and Vanessa stepped into the ballroom, bathed in the warm glow of the chandeliers. The applause was polite at first, then swelled into a rolling crescendo as the couple moved gracefully toward the raised dais at the center of the hall. Ryan held Vanessa’s hand high, soaking in the adulation, his chest expanding with absolute, unchecked arrogance.
He stepped onto the dais, took the microphone, and looked out over the sea of four hundred people.
"Thank you," Ryan said, his voice radiating warmth, authority, and charismatic power. "Tonight is not merely a celebration of Caldwell Holdings. It is a celebration of vision, of perseverance, and of the incredible team that makes the impossible happen."
He turned his gaze toward Vanessa, who stood beside him in her crimson gown, beaming up at him like a devoted queen.
"In life and in business, great milestones cannot be achieved alone," Ryan said, his voice dropping into an emotional cadence that had the society matrons dabbing their eyes. "You need someone beside you who possesses unwavering strength, brilliant clarity, and unyielding loyalty. Vanessa, this victory belongs to you."
The room erupted into applause.
Ryan set the microphone on the stand, turned fully toward Vanessa, slipped his arm around her waist, pulled her close, and kissed her directly on the lips.
The photographers crowded the edge of the stage, flashes bursting in rapid, blinding succession, capturing the scandalous, breathtaking declaration of power.
The applause grew louder, fueled by champagne and the intoxicating thrill of high-society drama.
Ryan broke the kiss, a triumphant smile plastered across his face, his eyes sweeping across the ballroom to bathe in the admiration of the crowd.
Then, his gaze landed on the entrance forty feet away.

And his world stopped spinning.
