Chapter 4 - The House of Cards

The boardroom on the thirty-second floor of the Whitmore Tower smelled of polished mahogany, stale espresso, and sheer panic.

When Daniel Whitmore stumbled through the double doors at eight-fifty that morning, he looked like a ghost of the man who had dragged me across his mother’s terrace twenty-four hours earlier. His eyes were bloodshot, his custom shirt was rumpled, and he hadn't shaved. Two empty coffee cups rested in his trembling hands.

Around the long glass table, eight board members—all men who had spent years kissing Daniel’s ring in exchange for lucrative consulting fees—were arguing over each other in panicked shouts.

"The payroll accounts are frozen!" Arthur Sterling, the chief financial officer, slammed a stack of ledgers onto the table. "Our primary operating line with Apex Global has been revoked! Our commercial subcontractors at the harbor project walked off the site two hours ago because the progress payments bounced!"

"Shut up! Everyone shut the hell up!" Daniel roared, slamming his coffee down, spilling dark liquid across the polished wood. "It's an administrative error! A clerical glitch! My lawyers are filing an injunction in federal court right now!"

"An administrative error?" Sterling sneered, pushing his glasses up his nose. "Daniel, Apex Global filed a notice of statutory receivership at dawn! They aren't a bank. They're a holding company controlled by Carter Capital. Do you know who owns Carter Capital? Alexander Carter!"

"I know who he is!" Daniel screamed, his face turning an ugly, mottled crimson. "I’m married to his daughter!"

"Then why the hell did your wife file a restraining order against you at seven o'clock this morning?"

The room froze.

The voice didn't come from the board members.

It came from the rear entrance of the boardroom.

The double doors parted, and Victoria Vance stepped inside, flanked by three forensic accountants in grey suits and two armed corporate security guards.

Behind them walked my father.

And beside my father walked me.

I had traded my torn cream dress for a charcoal Saint Laurent power suit. My hair was pulled back into a sleek, severe low bun, showcasing the faint bruising along my jawline rather than hiding it. I wore no jewelry except for a pair of diamond studs my father had given me when I graduated from Yale with my master’s in corporate finance—a degree Daniel had spent six years telling his mother was an "online certificate."

Daniel stared at me, his mouth opening and closing like a landed fish. "Emily?"

I didn't answer him. I walked to the head of the conference table, where the oversized leather chairman's chair sat empty. I pulled it out and sat down. Alexander stood behind my right shoulder, his arms folded across his chest, radiating the silent menace of an apex predator.

"What... what do you think you’re doing?" Daniel stammered, stepping toward the table. "This is a private corporate meeting! Security! Get them out of here!"

"The security team answers to Carter Capital now, Daniel," Victoria Vance announced, dropping a thick leather binder onto the table in front of Arthur Sterling. "As of six o'clock this morning, Carter Capital exercised Section 14-B of the Mezzanine Credit Agreement. Due to material default, including non-payment of principal, unauthorized diversion of corporate funds to personal accounts, and the pending felony arrest of the Chief Executive Officer—"

"Felony arrest?" Arthur Sterling gasped, recoiling from Daniel as if he carried the plague.

"I didn't commit a felony!" Daniel shrieked. "This is a divorce dispute! It's a civil matter!"

"Domestic battery resulting in bodily injury is a Class A felony in this state, Mr. Whitmore," Victoria said with icy precision. "The Charleston Police Department received the surveillance footage from your mother's courtyard an hour ago. The warrants have been signed."

Daniel's knees buckled slightly. He grabbed the edge of the conference table for support. "Surveillance footage? There were no cameras on the terrace!"

"You forgot that I was the one who installed the home security system three years ago," I said, speaking for the first time.

My voice was quiet, but it commanded every ounce of attention in the room. The eight board members stared at me in stunned disbelief.

"You never paid attention to the house maintenance, Daniel," I continued, leaning back in the chair. "You were too busy buying vintage sports cars with credit lines you couldn't afford. The security system in the courtyard has four 4K pan-tilt-zoom cameras with directional audio. It captured everything. The argument. Your mother’s instructions to 'teach me a lesson.' The sound of your hand in my hair. The way you dragged me twelve yards across the marble while thirty of your friends watched."

"Emily, please..." Daniel whimpered, tears spilling over his red eyelids. "I was drunk. I was under so much pressure from the harbor project! You know how my mother gets when things aren't perfect! I lost control for one second!"

"One second?" I opened the folder Victoria placed in front of me. "According to the forensic audit completed last night, you have diverted four point two million dollars from Whitmore Development's operational accounts over the last eighteen months into an offshore shell company called Pelagic Holdings."

Daniel's face went completely slack.

"You thought nobody would notice," I said, flipping the page. "You used that money to finance Margaret’s lavish birthday party, her trips to Paris, and your own private gambling debts in the Bahamas. Meanwhile, the concrete workers on the North River bridge haven't received their health benefits in four months."

I closed the folder with a sharp *thud*.

"Gentlemen of the board," I said, looking around the table at the terrified directors. "Under Section 8 of your corporate charter, any officer facing indictment for financial crimes or crimes of moral turpitude may be removed by an immediate majority vote of the primary debt-holders. As Carter Capital holds ninety-four percent of your debt and seventy percent of your voting proxies as of this morning... Daniel Whitmore is terminated. Effective immediately."

"You can't fire me from my own company!" Daniel lunged across the table toward me, his hands outstretched. "This is my father's company! This is my legacy!"

Before he could reach within three feet of me, the two security guards slammed Daniel against the mahogany table. His face was pressed hard against the glass surface, knocking over ledgers, pens, and his half-empty coffee.

"Daniel Whitmore," one of the guards said, pulling Daniel's arms behind his back and clicking a pair of stainless steel handcuffs around his wrists. "You are being detained pending the arrival of the Charleston Police Department."

"Emily!" Daniel screamed, his voice muffled against the glass. "Emily! You're destroying my life! We were supposed to be partners!"

I stood up from the chairman's chair, smoothing my jacket.

"You never wanted a partner, Daniel," I said, looking down at the man who had terrorized me for six years. "You wanted a servant you could abuse when the world refused to bow to you."

I turned to the board members, who were sitting in petrified silence.

"The Whitmore Development Group will be placed into Chapter 11 reorganization by noon," I informed them calmly. "All legitimate debts to vendors and subcontractors will be paid in full by Carter Capital. Your positions on this board will be reviewed based on your level of cooperation with the forensic investigators."

I looked back down at Daniel as the security officers hauled him to his feet.

May you like

"Goodbye, Daniel."
