Chapter 6 - The Golden Child Cracks

At 11:45 PM, three marked county sheriff squad cars and Detective Miller’s unmarked cruiser pulled into Arthur Vance’s circular driveway, their red and blue strobe lights flashing violently against the brick facade.

I stayed parked at the curb, watching from inside my car.

The sirens weren't blaring, but the silent, rhythmic pulse of the flashing emergency lights transformed my father's dignified estate into an active crime scene. Within sixty seconds, the massive double front doors swung open.

Arthur appeared on the porch wearing a silk dressing gown, his face flushed with incandescent fury. Vanessa stood behind him in silk pajamas, clutching her phone to her ear.

"What is the meaning of this?!" Arthur’s booming voice echoed down the quiet cul-de-sac. "I have personal ties to the Sheriff! Who authorized this circus on my private property?!"

Detective Miller strode up the wide brick steps, flanked by two armed uniformed deputies.

"Arthur Vance?" Miller asked, holding up a signed warrant. "We have a judicial warrant for the arrest of Tyler Montgomery for felony aggravated assault, and a search warrant to seize all electronic devices, including the cellular phone Tyler was using yesterday afternoon."

Vanessa shrieked from the doorway. "What?! You can't arrest a child! He's fourteen years old! Get off our property! Dad, do something!"

"This is an outrage!" Arthur roared, stepping into Miller's physical path. "I told your department already—this was a minor household accident! Detective Thomas Vance closed this inquiry! You have no jurisdiction to harass my family based on the hysterical lies of my estranged daughter!"

Miller didn't flinch. "Detective Thomas Vance has been suspended from duty pending an internal affairs investigation for filing a fraudulent official report. Step aside, Mr. Vance, or you will be arrested right now for felony obstruction of justice."

The mention of Internal Affairs hit Arthur like a physical punch. His mouth dropped open, the ruddy color instantly draining from his cheeks.

"Where is the boy?" Miller demanded.

Before Arthur could fabricate another lie, Tyler appeared in the foyer behind Vanessa. Without his swagger, without his grandfather towering over him to grant him absolute immunity, he looked small, terrified, and profoundly fragile.

"Mom?" Tyler’s voice cracked in a shrill, panic-stricken register. "Mom, what’s happening? Why are the police here? Grandpa, you said you handled it! You said nothing would happen!"

"Shut your mouth, Tyler!" Arthur barked, turning around to silence him. "Don't say a single word!"

"Tyler Montgomery," one of the uniformed deputies said, stepping past Arthur and entering the marble foyer. "Turn around and place your hands behind your back."

Vanessa lost her mind. She lunged forward, clawing at the deputy's sleeve. "Don't touch him! Don't you dare touch my son! He has a scholarship! He has a future! Claire did this! That jealous, pathetic bitch did this to us!"

"Ma'am, step back immediately or you will be placed under arrest for assaulting an officer!" the second deputy commanded, unhooking his taser from his tactical vest.

Tyler began to weep uncontrollably as the cold steel handcuffs clicked around his wrists. "Grandpa, help me! You promised! You said Emily didn't matter! You said I could do whatever I wanted because I’m a Vance!"

The words cut through the night air like a razor.

Arthur stood frozen on his porch, his hands clenching and unclenching, watching his carefully constructed kingdom of unchecked dominance unravel before the entire neighborhood. Curtains were twitching across the street. Porch lights were flicking on one by one at every home in the cul-de-sac.

Mr. Henderson stood at the edge of his lawn, arms folded, smiling coldly.

Detective Miller escorted the weeping fourteen-year-old down the steps toward the cruiser. As Miller passed Arthur, he stopped and looked the patriarch dead in the eye.

"We have the 4K perimeter video from next door, Arthur. We saw you watch the girl scream on the ground for twenty-five minutes while you drank your beer. The District Attorney has already drafted your indictment for felony child neglect and failure to render aid. Enjoy your evening. We’ll be seeing you at the courthouse on Wednesday morning."

Arthur swayed on his feet, his jaw working silently, unable to produce a single word.

May you like

The squad car doors slammed shut. The cruisers pulled away into the night, their sirens finally wailing as they reached the main avenue, leaving Arthur and Vanessa standing in the flashing shadows of total, public ruin.
