Chapter 6 - Desperate Gambits and Public Humiliation

By noon, the financial world had caught fire.
Headlines across the internet exploded:
*BREAKING: MORRISON GLOBAL CEO BRENDAN MORRISON FIRED FOR MULTI-MILLION DOLLAR FRAUD.*
*THE GHOST HEIRESS: CASSIDY BENNETT REVEALED AS TRUE OWNER OF MORRISON EMPIRE.*
*SCANDAL AT THE SUMMIT: SEC LAUNCHES CRIMINAL PROBE INTO MORRISON FAMILY FINANCES.*
Inside the sprawling, gated Morrison mansion in Lake Forest, Diane Morrison was pacing across the drawing room like a caged animal. The crystal chandeliers rattled every time she slammed her phone down onto the antique side tables.
“What do you mean the accounts are locked?!” Diane shrieked into the receiver. “I am Diane Morrison! My family has banked with Northern Trust for four generations! You release my credit lines this instant!”
The voice on the other end was icy, professional, and entirely unbothered. “Mrs. Morrison, the primary guarantor on your personal credit facility was Morrison Global Holdings. That corporate guarantee was formally revoked at 9:15 this morning by order of the Chairman. Furthermore, your Lake Forest property is listed as corporate housing under the Aegis portfolio. A thirty-day notice to vacate has already been filed with the Lake County Sheriff’s Department.”
Diane’s phone slipped from her fingers, clattering against the parquet floor.
At that moment, the front doors burst open. Brendan staggered into the foyer, looking completely unhinged. His tie was gone, his shirt was unbuttoned at the collar, and behind him trailed Jessica, crying hysterically while clutching three shopping bags she had hastily packed from Brendan’s office before being thrown out into the rain.
“Mom!” Brendan yelled, his voice cracking. “Did you see the news? That bitch... she set us up! She owned everything the entire time!”
Diane rushed over, grabbing her son by the shoulders. “Brendan! Calm down! We still have our social standing! We have the press! No one knows who this Cassidy Bennett really is! She’s an orphan with a checkbook! We fight this in the court of public opinion!”
Diane’s eyes lit up with a feverish, venomous spark. “Get my publicist on the phone! We’ll call a press conference right outside the gates! We’ll tell them she’s mentally unstable! We’ll say she’s holding my unborn grandchild hostage, that she had an affair with Arthur Vance, that she’s trying to steal your family legacy because she’s greedy!”
Jessica sniffled, wiping her mascara-stained cheeks. “Yes! Diane is right! The internet loves a tragic family story! We can paint her as a ruthless, pregnant gold-digger who manipulated an innocent family!”
Within two hours, Diane had assembled six local news vans outside the wrought-iron gates of the Lake Forest estate.
Standing in front of the television cameras wearing a somber black mourning coat, Diane looked directly into the lenses, clutching a lace handkerchief to her eyes.
“My son is heartbroken,” Diane wept convincingly, her voice trembling with manufactured grief. “We welcomed Cassidy into our home with open arms. We treated her like a daughter. And how does she repay us? She uses private corporate maneuvers to steal our family’s century-old business while holding my son’s unborn baby as leverage. She is unwell, ladies and gentlemen. We are begging the authorities to step in and protect our family and our innocent grandchild from this cold, calculating woman!”
Brendan stood behind his mother, looking solemnly down at the ground, playing the part of the devoted, betrayed husband to perfection.
The live broadcast swept across local networks and began trending rapidly on social media platforms. Thousands of comments began pouring in, questioning Cassidy’s motives, calling her a corporate monster who had weaponized a pregnancy against a historic Chicago family.
Inside the Pinnacle Tower penthouse, Arthur Vance stood before me, his phone buzzing nonstop with calls from panicked PR firms.
“Cassidy,” Arthur said grimly. “Diane’s press conference has been picked up by CNN and Bloomberg. Twitter is running wild with the ‘Gold-Digger Heiress’ narrative. The board is getting nervous about our stock valuation tomorrow morning. We need to release a formal corporate statement immediately.”
I sat back on the plush sofa, calmly sipping a cup of warm chamomile tea.
“A corporate statement, Arthur?” I asked, smiling faintly. “Words don’t stop a smear campaign. Proof does.”
I reached into my handbag and pulled out a small, metallic flash drive.
“What is that?” Arthur asked.
“Three years ago, when we renovated Diane’s dining room, I insisted on upgrading the residential security infrastructure,” I said calmly. “I installed ultra-high-definition, four-k, cloud-backed audio and video surveillance in every formal entertaining room. I told Diane it was for insurance purposes against antique theft.”
Arthur’s eyes went wide. “You have last night on video?”
“In full, crystalline, unedited four-k resolution,” I murmured, handing him the drive. “With crystal-clear multi-directional audio. I want you to leak it directly to TMZ, the Chicago Tribune, and every major television network. Don’t add a commentary. Don’t release a statement. Just upload the raw file.”
Arthur looked at the flash drive in his palm, a slow, terrifying grin spreading across his face.
“Activate Protocol 7, Phase Two,” Arthur whispered.
“Send it,” I said.
Within twenty minutes, the entire world stopped.
The viral video hit the internet like a thermonuclear bomb.
There was Diane Morrison, standing over a heavily pregnant woman, smiling maliciously as she dumped a bucket of filthy, freezing mop water directly over my head.
There was the sound of the freezing water splashing against my swollen belly.
And loudest of all—captured in horrific, high-definition clarity—was Brendan Morrison throwing his head back, laughing hysterically, and saying: *“Mom, don’t be cruel. Give her forty dollars. She’s carrying extra luggage.”* Followed by Jessica Taylor giggling and warning them not to get the smell on the good linen.
The internet’s reaction was not just swift; it was violent.
Within forty-five seconds, the narrative of the “betrayed Morrison family” was completely pulverized. Diane Morrison was branded a monster. Brendan Morrison became the most hated man in North America. Hashtags like #BoycottMorrison, #JusticeForCassidy, and #ArrestTheMorrisons surged to the number one trending spots worldwide.
Brands, charity galas, and high-society clubs immediately released emergency statements revoking Diane’s honorary memberships. The Chicago Police Department released an official tweet: *The Special Victims Unit and Domestic Assault Division have opened a formal criminal inquiry into the incident involving Diane Morrison and Brendan Morrison.*
Outside the gates of the Lake Forest estate, the reporters Diane had invited suddenly turned into a lynch mob.

Microphones were shoved through the iron bars. Cameras zoomed in on the windows as Diane and Brendan scrambled behind the closed curtains, terrified as the police sirens began wailing in the distance.
