Chapter 4 - Shadows Over Star Island

By midnight, the mansion was dark, but my war room in the basement hummed with blue-tinted monitor light.

Luca stood across from my steel desk, sliding a thick manila folder across the surface. Behind him, two of my senior intelligence analysts were typing furiously into encrypted terminals.

“It’s worse than you thought, Boss,” Luca said, his voice flat.

I opened the folder. The first photograph was of Vanessa Hart sitting at an upscale waterfront restaurant in Boca Raton. Sitting across from her was not her father, nor any of her high-society girlfriends.

It was Victor Moretti.

The Moretti family controlled the narcotics pipeline running from the northern docks down through Broward County. For six years, we had maintained a bloody, fragile ceasefire. I controlled the cargo terminals, the private airports, and the legitimate political apparatus of Miami-Dade. Moretti had been starving on the fringes, desperate for a foothold in my shipping lanes.

“When was this taken?” I asked, my fingers tracing the outline of Moretti’s scarred jawline in the surveillance photo.

“Three days ago,” Luca replied. “We tapped the private telecom servers at the Hart estate after you broke the engagement tonight. Vanessa’s father didn't just lose money in bad investments. He borrowed forty million dollars from Moretti’s loan-sharking front in the Bahamas. When the market crashed last month, Moretti called the debt.”

I leaned back in my leather chair, my eyes narrowing. “And Vanessa was the collateral.”

“Vanessa was the Trojan horse,” Luca corrected. “The plan wasn't just for her to marry you, Daniel. Once she had the legal status of your wife, your mother was going to sponsor her for joint authority over the Cole Family Trust. Then, an ‘unfortunate accident’ was supposed to happen to you.”

My blood ran like liquid nitrogen through my veins. “And Noah?”

Luca hesitated, his jaw clenching. “A three-year-old child cannot inherit an empire without a legal guardian. With you gone and Vanessa as his adoptive mother, Moretti would have controlled the entire Florida seaboard through her signature. As for the boy… Moretti’s lieutenant was overheard saying that a boy with weak lungs could easily drown in a private swimming pool.”

A sickening silence settled over the room.

I didn't shout. I didn't flip the desk. In the mafia, when a man screams, he is desperate. When a man goes completely still, he is preparing a graveyard.

“And my mother?” I asked, each word deliberate. “What was her role?”

“Margaret didn’t know about Moretti,” Luca said quickly. “Our wiretaps confirm that much. Your mother is arrogant, Daniel, and she is obsessed with bloodlines, but she didn’t want you dead. Vanessa manipulated her. Vanessa convinced her that Grace was an opportunist who was poisoning Noah’s mind. Margaret truly believed she was saving the family from a scandal.”

I closed the folder with a soft thud.

“Stupidity in a general is just as fatal as treason,” I whispered. “Margaret’s pride almost killed my son.”

“What are your orders, Boss? We have twelve operators outside the Hart compound on Star Island right now. I can have the gates breached in ten minutes.”

“No,” I said, standing up and buttoning my suit jacket. “A quick death in the dark is mercy. The Harts want to play in society? They want to use charity boards and grand balls to hide their filth? Tomorrow evening is the annual St. Jude Children’s Gala at the Biltmore Hotel.”

Luca raised an eyebrow. “The entire syndicate council will be there. Every politician, every judge, every don from Jacksonville to Key West.”

“Exactly,” I said, a cold, predatory fire burning in my gut. “Vanessa thinks she can slink back to her social circle, play the victim, and claim I went mad over a nanny. Moretti will be there, waiting to see if his investment holds.”

“And what about Grace?” Luca asked quietly.

I looked at the security feed on the central monitor. Camera 4 showed Noah’s bedroom. Grace had fallen asleep in the plush armchair beside Noah’s crib, her hand resting through the wooden slats, holding Noah’s small fingers even in her sleep. She looked so young, so innocent, so entirely detached from the blood-soaked empire I ruled.

“Get the best couturier in South Beach to the mansion by seven in the morning,” I instructed. “I want emeralds. I want silk. I want Grace Miller dressed like an empress.”

Luca’s eyes widened slightly. “Boss… bringing Grace to the Biltmore as your escort? That’s not just a statement. That’s declaring her your queen in front of the five families.”

May you like

“She stood between a killer’s alliance and my son,” I said, walking toward the elevator. “She took a blow meant for this house. She is already my queen, Luca. Tomorrow night, I’m just letting the world kiss her ring.”
