Chapter 16 - The Boardroom Coup

The Brennan family thought their nightmare had reached its climax in my conference room. They were wrong. Desperate people do not surrender; they thrash, they claw, and inevitably, they make fatal mistakes.
Two days after the conference room confrontation, while my legal team was finalizing the formal asset attachment orders with the federal court, Tyler slipped out of the motel.
He didn't run to an airport. He didn't have the money for a bus ticket, let alone a flight. Instead, he took an Uber paid for by an anonymous corporate card and headed straight into downtown Austin, straight into the gleaming glass tower of Meridian Capital.
Meridian was our fiercest rival in the defense logistics and machine-learning sector. For eighteen months, their CEO, a ruthless private equity vulture named Julian Croft, had tried every underhanded trick in the book to execute a hostile takeover of Vance-Brennan. But because I owned 65% of the voting shares and Marcus held another 15%, Croft had been blocked at every turn.
Croft was waiting for Tyler in the top-floor boardroom, a glass of twenty-year-old scotch already poured.
"You're late, Tyler," Croft said smoothly, leaning back in his Italian leather armchair, his bespoke silver suit gleaming under the recessed lighting. "I don't like waiting for men who don't have a penny left to their name."
Tyler wiped sweat from his forehead with the sleeve of his jacket. He looked frantic, his eyes darting across the room.
"I have the master encryption keys, Julian," Tyler panted, slamming a thumb drive onto the marble table. "Everything. Lucia’s private server backdoors, the source code for the new automated logistics algorithm, and the operational schematics for the Department of Defense contract."
Croft arched an eyebrow, intrigued despite himself. "And how did a disgraced, unemployed former vice president manage to get his hands on the crown jewels of Vance-Brennan?"
"My sister thinks she's a genius, but she left her personal laptop syncing with the home network at the estate when she dragged us in there for her little tribunal," Tyler said, a manic, desperate grin spreading across his face. "While she was busy lecturing my father about some ancient Swiss account, I plugged this bad boy into the gateway hub in the hallway. I copied everything."
Croft leaned forward, picking up the heavy steel drive, turning it over in his manicured fingers.
"And what do you want for this, Tyler?" Croft asked softly. "A ticket out of the country? Five million in an offshore account?"
"Ten million," Tyler demanded, his voice cracking with greed. "Ten million cash wired to an account in Belize, and a guaranteed executive VP position at Meridian once you use this code to tank her DoD bid and buy her company for scrap. I want to see her on the street, Julian. I want to see her begging me for scraps just like she made my father beg!"
Croft chuckled, a low, rumbling sound. He plugged the thumb drive into a sleek black terminal on the table and tapped a few keys.
A status bar appeared on the large boardroom screen: *DATA TRANSFER IN PROGRESS — 14%... 38%... 72%... COMPLETE.*
A series of encrypted files unpacked across the screen. But instead of proprietary source code or classified defense algorithms, the screen suddenly flickered black.
A crisp, high-definition video feed snapped into place.
Tyler froze.
On the screen sat Lucia Brennan, wearing headphones, seated in her Austin office, looking directly into the camera. Beside her sat two agents wearing dark blue windbreakers with yellow lettering: *FEDERAL BUREAU OF INVESTIGATION — CYBER CRIMES DIVISION.*
*"Hello, Julian,"* Lucia's voice resonated through the state-of-the-art conference speakers, clear as crystal. *"And hello, Tyler. Did you really think my home security network would allow an unauthorized local transfer from an unverified flash drive without triggering a sandbox honeypot?"*
Tyler’s knees buckled. He grabbed the edge of the conference table to keep from falling. "No... no, that's impossible! I saw the directory transfer!"
*"You downloaded three gigabytes of spoofed dummy telemetry, Tyler,"* Lucia said calmly through the monitor. *"And by inserting that drive into Meridian Capital's corporate terminal, you have officially introduced proprietary federal defense data into an unsecured private network, violating Section 793 of the Espionage Act and the Defend Trade Secrets Act."*
Julian Croft went instantly rigid. He slammed his hand down on the terminal to pull the drive out, but the system locked instantly, flashing a red administrative banner: *TERMINAL SEIZED UNDER FEDERAL WARRANT — DO NOT DISCONNECT.*
The heavy mahogany boardroom doors burst open behind them.
Four armed FBI agents, led by a stern woman with a badge clipped to her belt, strode into the room, their weapons drawn at low-ready.
"Julian Croft, Tyler Brennan," the lead agent announced, her voice echoing off the glass walls. "Keep your hands where we can see them. You are both under arrest for conspiracy to commit corporate espionage and theft of trade secrets."
Tyler let out a high, terrified whine, dropping to his knees on the Persian rug, his hands clasped over his head as cold steel handcuffs snapped around his wrists.

On the screen, Lucia Brennan didn't smile. She didn't gloat. She simply closed her laptop, cutting the feed, leaving her brother to face the crushing weight of the law he thought he was too entitled to obey.
