Chapter 6 - Sophie’s Meltdown

“You’re lying!”

The screech cut through the air like tearing metal.

Sophie threw herself past Chad, her lace veil tearing as it caught on the golden arm of her bridal chair. She stomped toward me, her eyes wild, her face mottled with red blotches that completely ruined her twelve-hundred-dollar airbrushed bridal makeup.

“You’re lying, you miserable, jealous freak!” Sophie screamed, pointing a French-manicured finger directly into my face. “You’ve always hated me! You hated that I was pretty! You hated that Dad loved me more! You hated that Chad chose me!”

Sophie turned toward the guests, waving her arms frantically, trying to summon an army that was already abandoning her.

“Don't listen to her!” Sophie shrieked. “Look at her! She’s playing dress-up! Julian Vance wouldn't marry a frumpy, bookish nobody like Clara! Chad, tell her! Chad, tell everyone she’s full of shit!”

She turned back to Chad, expecting her handsome, blue-eyed husband to wrap his arms around her and validate her delusion.

Chad didn't move.

In fact, Chad had backed away from the head table entirely. His eyes were glued to the blue-bound legal files Marcus had placed in front of his father.

“Chad?” Sophie’s voice lost an octave, turning shrill and panicked. “Chad, baby, what are you doing? Come here and stand with me! Tell this bitch to leave our wedding!”

“Shut up, Sophie,” Chad muttered, his voice barely audible.

Sophie froze. She blinked, her head jerking back as if she’d been slapped. “What did you just say to me?”

“I said *shut up*!” Chad snapped, his voice cracking with sheer panic. He rounded on her, his face pale, sweat bead-lining his upper lip. “Do you have any idea what’s in these files? Dad’s bank didn't just issue a bridge loan! Dad personally guaranteed the underwriting for your father’s logistics warehouse expansion! If Graham doesn't own those waterfront lots, the underwriting is fraudulent! The Montgomery Continental Bank is exposed for twelve million dollars!”

Chad turned toward Julian Vance, his hands clasped together in an attitude of desperate, pathetic prayer.

“Mr. Vance... Julian... sir,” Chad pleaded, taking a trembling step forward. “I swear to God on my life, we didn't know. The Montgomery family had no part in Graham’s fraud! We were told the estate was completely clear! My father and I—we’re victims here too!”

“Chad!” Sophie shrieked, grabbing his tuxedo sleeve with both hands. “What are you doing?! This is our wedding day! You’re groveling to Clara’s fake boyfriend?!”

“Get your hands off me!” Chad snarled, violently yanking his arm away from her.

Sophie stumbled, nearly tripping on the hem of her train. The crowd gasped again. The golden couple, the picture-perfect suburban royalty whose love story had been blasted across every local lifestyle magazine for six months, was tearing each other apart like feral dogs in the middle of their own reception.

“He is Julian Vance, you idiot!” Chad roared at her, his composure entirely obliterated. “He could buy my father’s bank and turn it into a parking lot before breakfast on Monday! And he is *married* to your sister! Which means your sister holds the note on everything my family owns!”

Chad spun back to me, dropping his head in an immediate, humiliating bow.

“Clara... Clara, please. You know me. We went to high school together. I always respected you. Remember when I helped you carry those research boxes to your car two years ago? I always told Sophie she should be nicer to you! I told her you were the smart one, the grounded one!”

A low, deep sound rumbled from Julian’s chest. It wasn't a shout. It was a cold, quiet chuckle that made the hairs on the back of Chad’s neck stand straight up.

Julian stepped forward, placing his body squarely between Chad and me.

“Do not address my wife, Mr. Montgomery,” Julian said softly.

Chad froze, his chin practically touching his chest. “Yes, sir. Of course, Mr. Vance. I apologize. I deeply apologize.”

“You didn't help her with those boxes two years ago, Chad,” Julian said, his voice flat, emotionless, and devastating. “You stood by the trunk of your BMW and mocked her worn winter coat while Sophie took a video for her private Instagram story. My security team archives everything. We have the video. We have the comments you left.”

Julian paused, letting Chad’s stomach drop through the floorboards.

“Tomorrow morning at eight o’clock,” Julian said, “Montgomery Continental Bank will receive a formal demand for immediate collateral verification on the twelve-million-dollar credit facility. If your father cannot produce the valid, unencumbered deeds to the Hart waterfront lots—which he cannot, because my wife owns them—the facility will default instantly.”

Arthur Montgomery groaned, collapsing back into his banquet chair, his head in his hands.

“No...” Arthur whimpered. “Graham, you destroyed us. You absolute madman, you destroyed my family.”
