Chapter 6 - The Lion’s Den

Three days later, Dallas society was consuming itself in an orgy of whispered gossip, leaked text messages, and public humiliation.
The pristine facade of the Robles dynasty had completely disintegrated. The Highland Park mansion was surrounded by local news vans after the bank slapped bright yellow foreclosure notices on the six-foot wrought-iron gates. Javier’s name had been wiped from the Morrison & Cole website overnight, replaced by a terse statement: *“Mr. Robles is no longer affiliated with this firm. We are cooperating fully with regulatory authorities regarding independent financial discrepancies.”*
Yet, Carmen Robles was not a woman who surrendered quietly. She was a cornered rat, and cornered rats bite with filthy teeth.
I found this out on Thursday afternoon.
Sofia was recovering steadily at Alexander’s penthouse. Her swelling had gone down significantly, though the deep yellow-green bruises across her face and collarbone were still painful reminders of her wedding night. Dr. Chen had removed the micro-sutures from her lip, leaving only a faint pink line. More importantly, Sofia’s eyes were changing. The terrified, broken bride was fading away, replaced by the stubborn, iron-willed Vance blood she had inherited from her father.
Alexander had gone to Austin to meet privately with the Texas Attorney General. I had taken an hour to return to my Oak Lawn apartment to collect the rest of Sofia’s personal belongings and retrieve some legal documents from my home safe.
I had just locked my apartment door and walked down the carpeted hallway toward the elevators when a figure stepped out from the stairwell.
It was Carmen Robles.
She looked horrifying. The immaculate Chanel suit was gone, replaced by a wrinkled silk trench coat and dark, oversized sunglasses. Her hair, usually sculpted into an architectural coif, was frizzy and unwashed. Her hands, devoid of the heavy rings she had pawned forty-eight hours earlier to pay her criminal defense retainer, were clenched into white-knuckled fists.
“Elena,” she hissed, stepping directly into my path.
My heart hammered against my ribs, but I didn't back down. I stood tall, clutching my leather purse to my chest. “Get away from me, Carmen. You are violating a temporary restraining order just standing on this floor.”
Carmen let out a raw, cracked laugh that sounded entirely unhinged. “A restraining order? Do you think a piece of paper matters to me now? Your monster of an ex-husband has frozen every account I own! My home is gone! My son is facing twenty years in Huntsville! Do you think I give a damn about a piece of paper?”
“Your son beat my daughter within an inch of her life for a piece of real estate!” I spat, my voice shaking with pure maternal fury. “You beat her forty times with a silver belt, Carmen! You belong in a cage!”
Carmen lunged forward, her face inches from mine. The stench of stale gin and desperation was heavy on her breath.
“Listen to me, you pathetic little schoolteacher,” Carmen snarled, her voice dropping into a vicious, guttural whisper. “You tell Alexander to drop the forensic complaints. You tell him to release the liens on my assets, or I swear to you on the grave of my mother, I will destroy Sofia’s life permanently.”
“You have nothing left to threaten us with,” I said, refusing to blink.
“Don't I?” Carmen sneered, pulling a manila folder from beneath her trench coat and waving it in my face. “Do you know what Javier spent the last three months doing while Sofia was playing blushing bride? He went through every single email, every cloud backup, every private photo Sofia ever took on her laptop while they were dating. We have medical records from her college years. We have private diary entries. We have intimate photographs, Elena.”
A sickening chill swept through my veins.
“You put one foot out of line,” Carmen whispered, her eyes burning with pure malice, “you let Alexander file those assault charges with the Grand Jury next Tuesday, and those photos will be on every pornographic server, every social media feed, and sent directly to the inbox of every executive at the architecture firm where Sofia works. She will never show her face in this state again. She will be an untouchable pariah. Tell Alexander that. He has forty-eight hours to call off his attack dogs, or his precious little princess becomes public property.”
She shoved the folder against my chest, turned on her heel, and vanished down the fire stairs, her heels clattering furiously against the metal steps.
I stood in the empty hallway, trembling so violently I dropped my keys.
When I got back to the Crescent penthouse an hour later, I was still shaking. Alexander was standing by the dining room table, reviewing a thick stack of state warrants with Nathan Brooks. Sofia was sitting on the sofa, a blanket over her lap, sketching quietly in a notepad.
I walked straight up to Alexander and pulled him into the private study, closing the heavy mahogany doors behind us.
“She ambushed me at my apartment,” I said, my voice barely above a whisper. I threw the manila folder onto his desk.
Alexander opened it. He scanned the contents—printouts of hacked emails, personal journals, and thumb-drive indices containing private digital folders labeled with Sofia’s name.
For ten seconds, the room went completely airtight.
Alexander’s face didn't twist in rage. It did something much worse. His skin went totally gray, his jaw setting so hard I could hear his molars grind together from across the desk.
“She threatened to leak them,” I choked out, tears finally spilling down my cheeks. “She said she’d send them to Sofia’s employers. She said she’d make Sofia an untouchable pariah if you don't drop the charges.”
Alexander closed the folder with terrifying gentleness.
He picked up his phone. He didn't call Nathan Brooks. He didn't call his corporate lawyers.
He dialed an international number with a UK country code.
“Arthur,” Alexander said into the phone. “It’s Alexander Vance. I need the ghost team you used for the Dubai sovereign wealth recovery in 2022. I need complete, unrestricted digital exfiltration and scorched-earth offensive cyber operations. Target: the Robles family network, every server, every personal device, and every cloud account held by Carmen, Javier, and their six co-conspirators. I want their lives excavated to the bedrock. And Arthur? Find the server hosting that blackmail material. When you find it, I don't want you to just delete it. I want you to replace every file on their drives with the raw evidentiary video of the bridal suite beating.”
Alexander paused, listening to the voice on the other end.

“Yes,” Alexander answered softly. “Upload it to every contact in their address books. Family, church members, country club boards, and banking syndicates. If Carmen Robles wants to play with public exposure… let us show her what total exposure looks like.”
