Chapter 5 - The Corporate Ambush

The gates of the Highland Ridge estate were forged iron, twenty feet high, bearing the stylized *L* that Frank Lawson had slapped onto every building he owned.

At 4:45 p.m., those gates were torn from their stone pillars by a Caterpillar excavator operated by the North Carolina State Highway Patrol tactical logistics unit.

A convoy of six black federal SUVs, followed by two military police cruisers, rolled up the winding, quarter-mile paved driveway lined with ancient weeping willows.

Kate rode in the lead SUV beside Tessa. She had changed into operational combat fatigues, her hair tucked under an Army patrol cap, a ballistic vest strapped across her chest. She had no official jurisdiction over the civilian search, but as the complaining witness and federal technical advisor on military procurement fraud, Tessa had authorized her presence within the perimeter.

When the convoy screeched to a halt on the circular cobblestone motor court, the front doors of the mansion flew open.

Frank Lawson marched out, flanked by Daniel and three men in three-piece suits clutching leather briefcases—the premier criminal defense attorneys in the state.

"This is an outrage!" shouted Arthur Sterling, Frank’s lead attorney, thrusting a gold-embossed cease-and-desist letter toward Tessa as she stepped out of the vehicle. "This is private residential property! You broke down historic gates! We have already filed for an emergency injunction with the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals!"

Tessa didn't even look at the paper. She pushed past Sterling, holding a high-court warrant signed by the Chief Federal Judge of the Middle District.

"Federal Rule 41 search warrant for real property, outbuildings, subterranean structures, and all electronic storage media," Tessa recited mechanically. "Step aside, counselor, or you’ll be sharing a cell with your client by sundown."

Behind them, the excavator rumbled up the driveway, its steel tracks tearing deep trenches into Frank’s manicured zoysia lawn.

"What is that machine doing here?" Daniel screamed, his voice cracking with hysteria. He looked haggard, his tie undone, dark purple bags hanging under his bloodshot eyes. He saw Kate stepping out of the SUV and his face contorted in rage. "Kate! What did you tell them? What did you do?"

Kate walked past him without acknowledging his existence. Her eyes were locked on Frank.

The old man wasn't shouting anymore. He was watching the excavator turn toward the wooded path leading to the private shooting range at the rear of the property. For the first time since this nightmare began, Frank Lawson looked terrified. His hands were tucked deep into his pockets, but Kate could see the fabric trembling.

"You think you’re smart, girl," Frank rasped as she drew near. "You think you’ve won something. You destroy this family, you destroy Mia’s heritage. Everything Daniel has belongs to her!"

"Mia doesn't need dirty money," Kate said coldly. "And she doesn't need a family of parasites who use their own blood as human shields."

"I took you in!" Frank hissed, stepping forward until an armed federal marshal shoved him back with a gloved hand. "You were an orphan from a broken trailer park in eastern North Carolina who joined the Army because you had no other way to pay for a community college degree! Daniel could have married any girl in the country club, and he chose *you*! We gave you status! We gave you class!"

"No, Frank," Kate said, her voice dropping like an executioner’s blade. "You chose me because you thought a female soldier with no wealthy family to back her up would be grateful. You thought I would be submissive. You thought you could put your debts in my name and that my military code of silence would keep me from fighting back."

She pointed toward the woods, where the excavator’s hydraulic arm let out a high-pitched scream as its bucket bit into the reinforced concrete floor of the shooting shed.

*CRACK.*

The sound of shattering structural concrete echoed across the estate like a rifle shot.

Daniel fell to his knees on the cobblestones, burying his head in his hands. "It’s over. It’s all over."

"Shut up, Daniel!" Frank roared, kicking his son’s foot. "Get up! Get on your feet, you coward!"

Five minutes later, an FBI evidence technician emerged from the woods carrying a heavy, fireproof steel lockbox coated in grey dust. He set it down on the hood of Tessa’s SUV.

A technician with a portable angle grinder stepped forward. White-hot sparks rained across the driveway for thirty seconds before the heavy latch snapped open with a dull pop.

Tessa pulled back the lid.

Inside were twelve thick, black-bound ledger books, hundreds of thousands of dollars in banded stacks of hundred-dollar bills, and three cold-storage cryptocurrency hardware wallets.

Tessa opened the top ledger. She flipped through the first five pages, whistle escaping her teeth.

"Well, look at that," Tessa murmured. "Direct payoffs to the chairman of the State Transportation Committee dating back to 2014. Building code payoffs for the riverfront condo project. And... oh, this is beautiful."

Tessa held up a blue carbon-copy voucher.

"A five-hundred-thousand-dollar payout to Daryl Jenkins for 'site security and structural removal' dated three weeks before the warehouse fire that killed two union organizers in Charlotte."

Frank’s lead attorney, Sterling, looked at the ledger, then slowly closed his briefcase. He took two steps away from Frank, turned his back, and pulled his phone from his pocket.

"Sterling!" Frank shouted, reaching for his lawyer’s arm. "What are you doing? Tell them they can’t use that! That’s privileged personal property!"

"Frank," Sterling said without turning around. "My representation was for corporate regulatory defense. This is a capital murder and racketeering indictment. I’m calling the senior partner to withdraw our firm from your representation immediately. Do not speak to me."

"You traitorous bastard!" Frank screamed.

Tessa stepped forward, pulling her handcuffs from her belt. "Frank Lawson, you are under arrest for racketeering, conspiracy to commit murder, federal procurement fraud, and witness tampering."

"Wait!" Daniel wailed, crawling across the cobblestones toward Kate’s boots. "Kate, please! Please, baby, think about Mia! I didn't know about the warehouse fire! I swear to God I didn't know about the union guys! My dad made me do the transfers! He made me forge your name! He told me he’d cut me out of the will if I didn't do it!"

Kate looked down at the man she had shared a bed with for six years. He was sniffling, tears and dirt streaking his cheeks, begging like a dog for scraps.

"You put a chemical sedative in my tea, Daniel," Kate said, her voice completely devoid of emotion. "You let six armed men break into our bedroom while our daughter watched. You stood on the sidewalk and filmed it on your phone so your family could laugh at me."

"I was scared!" he cried, reaching out to touch the hem of her trousers. "I was trying to protect you! If you were in jail, they wouldn't come after you!"

Kate pulled her foot back, disgusted.

"You weren't protecting me, Daniel. You were offering me up as bait so you could run."

Kate turned to the federal marshal beside her. "Take this garbage out of my sight."

The marshal hauled Daniel to his feet, wrenched his arms behind his back, and clicked the cuffs onto his wrists. Daniel began to sob uncontrollably, his knees giving out as two agents dragged him toward the transport van.

Frank didn't cry. As Tessa locked the cuffs around his thick wrists, the old man stared at Kate with pure, unadulterated venom.

"You haven't won, girl," Frank hissed through clenched teeth. "The money in Belize is gone. Peter is already across the state line. You’ll spend the rest of your life looking over your shoulder. I’ll buy every judge in this district before the trial starts."

Kate stepped close, her face inches from Frank’s ear.

"Peter isn't across the state line, Frank," Kate whispered. "He tried to board a private jet at Wilmington thirty minutes ago. The Department of Defense closed the airspace. He’s currently in an interrogation room at the military provost marshal’s office at Camp Lejeune."

Frank’s jaw dropped. The last vestige of his arrogant defiance shattered, leaving behind nothing but a broken, pathetic old criminal who had run out of road.

"Load them up," Tessa ordered.

The estate fell silent as the convoy doors slammed shut.
