Chapter 6 - The Shadows on the Wall

Mark didn't deny it.
He couldn't. The confession hung between us in the cold kitchen air, foul and undeniable.
"She wasn't supposed to feel anything," Mark stammered, tears finally spilling down his cheeks. "Vance Miller came to the house twice. Just twice, Elena! On Tuesdays, when you were at the marketing agency! He brought a mobile digital scanner. We just needed her eyes open for three seconds while she was under. Just three seconds to authorize the wire transfer to satisfy his debt!"
"You sold your daughter’s identity to a criminal," I said, the words tasting like ash in my mouth. "You let a violent extortionist into our home, into our daughter’s bedroom, and you sedated her like an animal so you could steal money to cover your brother’s crimes."
"To protect us!" Mark roared, slamming his fists onto the granite island. "You think Vance Miller is playing games? He has photos of Sadie at her preschool! He sent me pictures of you loading groceries into your car at the supermarket! He told me if the funds didn't clear by this Friday, he would make sure Sadie never walked out of that preschool again!"
"And you believed sedating her behind my back was the solution?!" I screamed, all fear vanishing, replaced by a volcanic, blinding maternal fury. "You didn't go to the FBI? You didn't come to me? You poisoned our child!"
"The FBI would have seized the funds immediately!" Evelyn chimed in, stepping forward, her face twisted in desperate arrogance. "Julian would have spent thirty years in federal prison! We were trying to resolve this quietly! Once the final transfer went through this Friday, Vance Miller would be paid, Julian would disappear to South America, and this family would be safe!"
"Julian is a thief!" I screamed at her. "And you—both of you—are monsters!"
I turned toward the hallway, heading for the stairs.
"Elena, where are you going?!" Mark lunged after me, grabbing my shoulder.
I whipped around with all the force in my body and drove the heel of my palm directly into his nose.
The cartilage crunched beneath the blow. Mark let out a strangled yelp of pain, stumbling backward against the hallway wall, his hands flying to his face as blood immediately began gushing between his fingers.
"Touch me again, and I swear to God I will kill you," I promised him, my voice dead, cold, and lethal.
Evelyn shrieked, rushing to her son’s side, pulling napkins from the kitchen to stem the bleeding. "You psychotic bitch! Look what you did to him!"
I didn't answer. I bolted up the stairs, my heart pounding a frantic rhythm against my ribs.
I reached Sadie’s door, pulled the key from my bra, unlocked it, and threw it open.
"Sadie! Sadie, wake up, sweetheart. Mommy’s here."
I rushed to the bed, flipping on the bedside lamp.
The bed was empty.
The floral quilt was thrown back. Sadie’s stuffed bunny lay on the floor, its soft ears trampled into the carpet.

And the bedroom window, which faced the roof above the front porch, was pushed wide open, the cold autumn wind whipping the curtains into a frenzy.
