Chapter 25 - The Bridge of Fire

The shockwave from the shattered iron gates tore through the ancient pines, stripping frost-laden needles from the branches and hurling them across the veranda in a sharp, stinging flurry. Vincent Calder didn’t flinch. His right hand steadied the Kimber 1911, the walnut grips locked firmly into his palm as the first dark shapes materialized through the billowing wall of gray smoke and orange flame.

"Frank! Mason!" Vincent's voice cut through the howling gale of Lake Michigan's midnight storm with the absolute authority of a man who owned the darkness. "Get Nora and Lucy to the drainage trail now! Do not wait for me!"

From the doorway, Nora’s voice rang out, sharp and unyielding, defying every instinct of self-preservation. "I told you, Vincent! We stay together!"

Before Vincent could turn to argue, a sustained burst of suppressed automatic gunfire chewed through the cedar siding inches above their heads, raining fine wood splinters down over Lucy’s sleeping form. The little girl stirred in Nora’s arms, letting out a soft, distressed whimper that twisted a knife straight through Vincent’s chest. The realization hit him with sickening clarity: Gabriel hadn't come to negotiate, and he hadn't come to capture. He had come to erase everything that Vincent had allowed himself to care about.

"Frank, take them!" Vincent roared, his eyes flashing with a dangerous, lethal fury. He didn't wait for compliance; he pivoted outward, stepping past the timber pillar, and squeezed the trigger twice.

In the swirling haze of smoke and rain, the muzzle flash of his Kimber painted the veranda in stark, violent monochrome. A tactical operative in full matte-black body armor, half-way up the stone steps, jerked backward as a .45 ACP round punched clean through his ceramic breastplate, dropping him instantly into the slush. But for every man that fell, two more poured through the blazing wreckage of the gate, their suppressed carbines tracking the elevation of the lodge.

Beside Vincent, Frank didn't hesitate anymore. The veteran operator grabbed Nora’s shoulder with one hand while keeping his assault rifle leveled at the treeline. "Move, Nora! Now! The boat slip is our only way out before they blow the cliffside generator!"

Clutching Lucy tightly against her chest, her knuckles stark white around the heavy brass key Vincent had given her, Nora cast one agonizing look back at the man standing alone against the storm. Vincent’s dark coat billowed in the wind, his face carved from cold, unyielding stone as he poured suppressive fire down the approach. There was no hesitation in his stance, only a terrifying, absolute commitment to buy them the seconds they needed to survive.

As Frank dragged Nora toward the narrow, stone-paved path descending into the dark ravines behind the lodge, Vincent pulled a heavy, military-grade detonator from his tactical belt. His thumb hovered over the red toggle switch. The bridge connecting the bluff to the mainland was rigged with enough C4 to send an armored battalion straight into hell.

"Say goodbye to the family estate, brother," Vincent whispered into the wind, slamming the switch down with the force of a falling anvil.
