Chapter 8 - The Viral Storm

Gene did not go quietly into the furnished townhome Brandon had secured for her on the other side of town.
Instead, three days after the eviction, she launched her counter-offensive.
It started with a three-minute video posted to Facebook by Aunt Clara, titled: *The Truth About How My Brother Evicted Our 72-Year-Old Widowed Mother.*
In the video, Gene sat on a beige sofa, dressed in a faded cardigan, clutching an old framed portrait of Arthur Vance. Her hair was disheveled—deliberately so—and her voice trembled with an Oscar-worthy performance of grandmotherly heartbreak.
*"I never thought I would live to see the day,"* Gene sobbed, looking directly into the smartphone camera. *"My son Brandon has fallen under the influence of an opportunist who entered his life with an illegitimate child. When I tried to protect my late husband's legacy, when I simply asked for boundaries, they retaliated. On a freezing morning, my own son sent the police to drag me out into the snow. They took my home. They took my memories. And now they are using my husband’s hard-earned money to buy the affection of a child who isn't even blood."*
The video caught fire. In a conservative, suburban county where family pedigree and maternal respect were treated like holy scripture, the outrage was instantaneous.
By noon, the post had two thousand shares. By evening, it had thirty thousand.
Local business pages were bombarded with negative reviews for Brandon’s architectural firm. Angry strangers left comments on our neighborhood association board calling Brandon an "elder abuser" and calling me a "gold-digging homewrecker."
At 6:00 p.m., Brandon came into the kitchen where I was helping Holly with her spelling homework. His jaw was set, but his eyes were clear.
"Are you ready?" he asked me.
"I’m ready," I said.
Brandon didn't hire a PR firm. He didn't film an emotional video of himself crying.
He simply created a single, public post on his personal Facebook page.
The header read: *Regarding Genevieve Vance and the Evergreen Property.*
Below it, he attached four high-resolution images.
The first was a photograph of the Christmas place card from December 26: the white linen table, the gold napkin ring, and the card that simply said: **Guest.**
The second was a photo of the cheap drugstore candle with the handwritten tag: **To Brandon’s Girl.**
The third was a copy of the county deed showing that Brandon had purchased the house out of foreclosure six years ago to save Gene from bankruptcy, along with the receipts showing Gene had spent five thousand dollars of trust money on the other grandchildren while spending three dollars on Holly.
The fourth was an excerpt from Arthur Vance’s personal journal, dated two weeks before his death:
*“Gene does not love our children; she collects them. If she ever turns her venom on Brandon’s little girl, cut the cord. Do not let her infect another generation.”*
Brandon added a single paragraph of text:
*“Family isn't blood. Family is how you treat the people who depend on you. Holly is my legal daughter. She was welcomed into this world by love, and she will never be forced to sit at a table where she is treated like an intruder. My mother receives a four-thousand-dollar monthly stipend, full health insurance, and a private apartment, all funded by the son she claims abandoned her. She was not evicted because she was old. She was evicted because she was cruel.”*
The internet is a volatile machine, but when presented with undeniable receipts, the turnabout is brutal.
Within three hours, the tide completely reversed.
The local community members who had known Arthur Vance began commenting, verifying the truth of Gene’s lifelong behavior. Other mothers flooded the comment section sharing stories of how Gene had treated them at country club functions or charity galas.

Aunt Clara deleted the original video within ninety minutes of Brandon’s post, but the damage was already done. The mask Gene had worn for forty years had been ripped off, completely and permanently, in full view of the entire county.
