Chapter 10 - The Fall of the Dynasty

By 8:15 PM, the quiet, tree-lined avenue in front of the Prescott estate was transformed into a staging ground of flashing red and blue lights.
Four Iowa State Patrol cruisers and two unmarked black sedans from the State Division of Criminal Investigation blocked the circular driveway, their high-intensity searchlights illuminating the stately white pillars like a stage set.
Neighbors stood on their immaculate lawns in heavy winter coats, their phones raised, whispering in stunned disbelief as the untouchable Prescotts were laid bare before the town.
I sat on the tailgate of an emergency medical services truck at the end of the driveway, a gray wool shock blanket draped over my shoulders. A young female paramedic was gently applying butterfly bandages to my split lip and cleaning the powder burns on my cheek.
Beside me stood Claire Sterling, her arms folded across her chest, a look of quiet, triumphant vengeance burning in her eyes.
"You held up better than I did," Claire murmured softly, handing me a paper cup of hot black coffee.
"Farm girls don't break easy," I croaked, my voice raw from the screaming and the gunsmoke.
Up on the porch, the heavy double doors opened.
Brad was led out first. His expensive navy suit was covered in white flour and blood from his shattered wrist, which was bound in a temporary medical splint before being cuffed to his belt. His head was hung low, his face pale and slack with the realization that his civic career, his social standing, and his freedom were gone forever.
Behind him came Patricia.
The grand matriarch of Cedar Falls was wearing her lavender knit suit, but her pearls were broken, scattering across the porch steps with every erratic step she took. Two female state investigators held her arms firmly as she shrieked obscenities into the night, her face purple with venom.
"Do you know who I am?" she screamed at the lead investigator, her voice cracking into a ragged screech that echoed across the neighborhood. "I built this town! My husband’s name is on the library! You are nothing! You're common civil servants! Get your filthy hands off me!"
"Patricia Prescott," a tall, stone-faced DCI agent read from a laminated card under the glare of the cruiser headlights, "you are under arrest for federal wire fraud, conspiracy to commit grand larceny, falsification of public records, and accessory to attempted murder."
As they led her down the stone steps, her eyes locked onto me sitting on the back of the ambulance.
She stopped. For three seconds, the venom drained from her eyes, replaced by a pure, unadulterated horror. She was looking at the woman she had slapped three days ago, the girl she had called a "nobody from some farm."
That farm girl was sipping coffee, wrapped in a blanket, watching her entire dynasty get loaded into the back of a state patrol cruiser.
"You ruined us," Patricia whispered, her voice finally breaking into a pathetic, trembling whimper. "You destroyed my family."
I lowered my coffee cup and looked her straight in her cold, ruined eyes.
May you like
"No, Patricia," I said, my voice carrying clearly through the crisp night air. "You destroyed your family. I just showed the world the bill."
