Chapter 10 - A Kingdom Built on Truth

The grand ballroom of the Vance Estate was completely unrecognizable from the night the nightmare began.
The cold, pretentious opulence was gone. The harsh crystal chandeliers had been replaced by warm, hand-blown amber fixtures that cast a gentle, golden glow across the room. Fresh white roses, jasmine, and eucalyptus filled the air with a clean, intoxicating fragrance.
The heavy, dark velvet draperies had been torn down, replaced by sheer ivory silk that billowed softly in the cool evening breeze flowing through the open French terrace doors.
There were no superficial socialites here tonight. No corrupt board members whispering treachery into their champagne flutes. No cameras. No press.
The room was filled with seventy people: the honest, loyal domestic staff led by a beaming Mrs. Gable; the engineers who had worked beside my father; the dockworkers from Moore-Vance Logistics; and my family members who had stood by the truth, including General Vance.
At the center of the dance floor, Clara and I swayed gently to the slow, romantic strains of a live cello and piano duo.
She wore a breathtaking, custom ivory lace gown that flowed around her like liquid starlight. Her dark hair was swept into soft waves, pinned with delicate pearls. She looked so radiant, so completely ethereal, that every breath I drew felt like a quiet prayer of gratitude.
“You’re staring,” Clara whispered playfully, resting her cheek against the lapel of my tuxedo as we turned across the polished marble.
“I am,” I admitted, tightening my arm around her waist, pulling her flush against my chest. “I’m looking at the woman who saw a broken man in a wheelchair, surrounded by wolves, and decided he was still worth loving.”
Clara tilted her head back, looking into my eyes with an intensity that made the rest of the world vanish into absolute nothingness.
“I didn't see a broken man, Alexander,” she said softly. “I saw a lion who was waiting for the right moment to roar. I saw a man who had given everything to everyone around him, only to be surrounded by scavengers. You didn't need saving. You just needed someone to stand by you while you fought.”
“And you stood,” I said.
“I will always stand by you,” she whispered.
The music gradually faded into a soft, sustained chord.
The room grew quiet.
I stopped in the very center of the ballroom—the exact spot where, six months ago, I had thrown off the gray blanket, rose to my feet, and stripped the engagement ring from Vanessa’s finger.
I looked down into Clara’s face.
I didn't hesitate. I dropped to one knee.
A soft, collective gasp rippled through the gathered friends and family. Mrs. Gable clutched her apron, tears instantly springing to her eyes.
Clara’s hands flew to her mouth, her eyes widening with pure, overwhelming emotion.
I reached into the inner pocket of my tuxedo and pulled out a small, velvet box. I opened it, revealing not a garish, seven-carat commercial diamond, but a vintage, flawless sapphire surrounded by a halo of micro-diamonds—a stone as deep and true as the ocean, designed to match the color of her soul.
“Clara Moore,” I said, my voice steady, clear, and ringing through every corner of the magnificent hall. “In this room, I learned that wealth can buy loyalty, but it can never buy love. I learned that power can demand obedience, but it can never inspire honor. You came into my life when I had lost faith in humanity, and with a single touch, you gave me back my heart.”
Tears spilled over Clara’s eyelashes, tracking down her glowing cheeks, but her smile was the most beautiful thing I had ever seen.
“You gave me a reason to stand,” I continued, my voice thick with emotion. “Now, I want to spend the rest of my life walking beside you. Will you marry me, Clara?”
Clara didn't wait.
She dropped to her knees right in front of me, throwing her arms around my neck, burying her face into my shoulder as her tears soaked my collar.
“Yes!” she cried out, her voice echoing joyfully through the room. “Yes, Alexander! A thousand times, yes!”
The grand ballroom detonated into thunderous cheers and applause. Mrs. Gable openly sobbed with joy. General Vance raised his glass in a booming toast.
I slipped the sapphire ring onto Clara’s finger—a ring that represented truth, sacrifice, and unbreakable devotion.
I stood up, lifting Clara into my arms, spinning her across the floor as our lips met in a deep, passionate kiss that sealed our past, sanctified our present, and bound our futures together for eternity.
The wolves had tried to destroy us. The traitors had tried to burn our kingdom to the ground.
But they had forgotten the most fundamental law of the universe:

A kingdom built on lies will crumble into ashes.
But an empire built on truth... will stand forever.
