Chapter 8 - The Confrontation

"Little girl," Marcus’s voice slithered down the hallway, dripping with cold, mocking venom. "You made a very bad mistake sticking your nose into my business."

He stepped into the kitchen entryway.

He was breathing heavily, his dark jacket covered in brick dust and glass fragments. In his right hand, he held a heavy, black semi-automatic pistol, the barrel pointed toward the floor. His eyes were bloodshot, feral, and completely unhinged. He looked like a rabid animal backed into a corner.

"Where are they?" he demanded, taking a slow step forward.

I stood behind the kitchen island, holding the chef's knife in a low, defensive stance, exactly as I had been taught in a hospital self-defense seminar years ago.

"The police are already here, Marcus," I said, my voice remarkably steady, devoid of the terror screaming inside my head. "You took too long. They know who you are. They know David Vance survived."

At the mention of David's name, Marcus's face twisted into an ugly, furious sneer.

"David is weak," Marcus spat, spitting blood-flecked saliva onto my clean hardwood floor. "He thought he could push me out of our company. He thought he could take everything I built. Those girls are my leverage. They're worth three million dollars in offshore bonds, and nobody is taking them from me."

He raised the pistol, aiming it directly at my chest.

"I asked you once, Clara. Where are they? Tell me, or I'll put a bullet through your knee, then your shoulder, until you point the way."

"You're a monster," I said, refusing to back down.

"I'm a survivor," he snarled.

He lunged forward across the island to grab my arm.

Instinct took over. As his broad hand reached across the marble counter, I swung the heavy chef’s knife down with all my strength. The steel blade sliced across the back of his forearm, tearing through the heavy canvas of his jacket and cutting deep into his flesh.

Marcus roared in pain and fury, dropping the pistol onto the marble counter. The gun skidded across the smooth stone, clattering over the edge and sliding beneath the refrigerator.

He clutched his bleeding arm, his pale eyes wild with murderous intent. "You dead bitch!"

He vaulted over the island, his massive frame slamming into me with the force of a freight train.

We crashed to the floor together, knocking over barstools. The knife flew from my hand, clattering out of reach. Marcus's heavy fingers clamped around my throat, cutting off my air instantly. Spots danced across my vision; my lungs burned for oxygen as I clawed at his face, scratching at his eyes, kicking furiously against the cabinets.

His weight was crushing. His grin was sickening. "I'm going to find them anyway," he whispered into my face. "And when I do, I'll tell them you died because of them."

The darkness was closing in at the edges of my vision.

Then—

*CRASH!*

"STATE POLICE! DON'T MOVE! DROP TO THE GROUND!"

The front door didn't just open—it blew completely off its hinges under the impact of a hydraulic ram.

Four heavily armored tactical officers in full black body armor swarmed into the hallway, assault rifles raised. Leading them was Nathan Miller, his service weapon drawn, his face a mask of thunderous authority.

Marcus froze, his hands still around my neck.

"GET OFF HER NOW!" Nathan roared. "HANDS BEHIND YOUR HEAD OR YOU WILL BE SHOT!"

Marcus made the fatal mistake of hesitating, his hand twitching toward the floor where his weapon had vanished.

A tactical officer didn't give him the chance. A taser fired with a sharp *POP*, two copper prongs slamming into Marcus's broad back. Fifty thousand volts of electricity surged through his muscular frame.

Marcus let out a strangled, guttural yowl as his muscles locked rigid. He collapsed sideways onto the floor, twitching helplessly. Two officers instantly pounced on him, driving their knees into his shoulder blades and ratcheting heavy steel handcuffs around his wrists with brutal efficiency.

"Suspect in custody!" an officer shouted. "Clear left! Clear right!"

Nathan rushed forward, dropping to his knees beside me. He hauled me upright, his large hand supporting my back as I coughed violently, drawing sweet, cold air back into my starved lungs.

"Clara! Clara, are you hit? Look at me!" Nathan urged, checking my neck and chest.

"I'm... I'm okay," I wheezed, clutching his tactical vest. "The pantry... Nathan, the girls are in the pantry floor!"
