Chapter 6 - Unmasking the Matriarch

We stepped into the quiet family consultation room down the hall from Olivia’s room. Detective Miller closed the heavy oak door behind us, cutting off the hospital corridor's hum.
Tamara Vance opened her file on the laminate table. "First, let me put your minds at ease. We have completed our preliminary assessment. Olivia is safe, and there is zero question about parental fitness regarding either of you. The evidence of third-party domestic terror and abuse by Carmen Ferris is overwhelming. An emergency protective order has already been signed by the presiding magistrate. Carmen is legally barred from coming within one thousand feet of Jessica, Olivia, your residence, your workplace, and Olivia's school for the next twelve months, pending criminal trial."
Jessica let out a ragged breath, her shoulders sagging as if an iron anvil had been lifted off her back.
"And the criminal side, Detective?" I asked, my voice flat. "Is she getting out?"
Detective Miller gave a grim, humorless smile. He opened his notebook. "Her public defender tried to argue for release on recognizance at her preliminary arraignment an hour ago, citing her age and supposed medical issues. The judge laughed him out of the courtroom."
Miller flipped a page. "The bail was set at five hundred thousand dollars cash. No ten percent bond allowed. The judge considered her an extreme flight risk because of what our cybercrimes unit uncovered in the last four hours."
"What did they find?" I asked.
"Your mother didn't just steal eighty-five thousand from your accounts, Mr. Ferris. She had applied for two separate home equity lines of credit against your apartment, utilizing a forged power of attorney. She was forty-eight hours away from closing on a three-hundred-thousand-dollar cash advance."
My jaw tightened until my teeth clicked. "Where was that money supposed to go?"
"To an offshore account in Belize. And we contacted the Baltimore City Police Department. The warrant we found in her drawer is the tip of an iceberg. Two years ago, your mother was the primary caregiver for an eighty-four-year-old retired naval commander. Over sixteen months, she drained his pension, signed over his vehicle titles, and when his estranged daughter finally caught on, Carmen vanished into the wind. Baltimore has just issued an interstate extradition warrant. Even if she miraculously posted bail here in Maricopa County, she would be immediately remanded to federal marshals."
"She’s never getting out," Jessica whispered, staring down at her bandaged wrists.
"Not for a very long time, Mrs. Ferris," Miller said gently. "Between felony child endangerment with bodily harm, elder abuse from her past, grand larceny, and bank fraud, Carmen Ferris is looking at fifteen to twenty-five years in state prison. She will likely spend the rest of her natural life behind bars."
My phone buzzed in my pocket. I pulled it out.
The screen displayed an automated collect call notification from the *Maricopa County Intake and Transfer Facility*.
Miller glanced at the screen. "That’s her. She gets two completed calls. She’s calling you."
I looked at Jessica. Her eyes were wide, but for the first time, they weren't filled with fear. They were filled with resolve.
"Put it on speaker," Jessica said.
I swiped the green button and accepted the charges.
*"This call is from a correctional facility and is subject to recording and monitoring,"* the robotic voice droned.
Then came Carmen’s voice.
It wasn't sweet. It wasn't the voice of a frail mother. It was shrill, manic, and vibrating with rage.
"Zayden! You listen to me, you spineless bastard!" she shrieked through the static. "You get down here right now with a private bondsman! Do you know what they’re doing to me? They put me in an orange jumpsuit! They took my jewelry! They put me in a cell with common street criminals! You tell that worthless little foster bitch of yours to drop these ridiculous lies, or so help me God, I will drag your family name through every headline in this city!"
I didn't raise my voice. I took a slow, deep breath, making sure every word was carved in ice.
"Listen to me carefully, Carmen," I said.
The line went dead silent for a fraction of a second at the sound of her first name coming from my mouth.
"You are not my mother," I told her. "My mother died the day you laid a hand on my daughter. You will never see Olivia again. You will never see Jessica again. You will never touch a single cent of my money. I have hired the most aggressive forensic accountants and prosecutors in this state. I am going to testify against you. Jessica is going to testify against you. And when you are sent to prison, I will ensure that every single penny you stole is recovered down to the last red cent."
"Zayden, you can't do this to me!" she cried, her voice cracking into genuine panic as she realized her control was entirely gone. "I'm your mother! Blood is blood! You owe me!"
"I owe you nothing," I said. "Goodbye, Carmen."

I hung up the phone and blocked the facility’s outgoing exchange.
