Chapter 10 - The Unbroken Truth

The interior of the casket was lined with cream-colored satin.

Clara lay inside, wearing the deep emerald-green dress she had bought for our seventh anniversary. Her dark hair was neatly arranged across her shoulders, her hands folded peacefully across her waist.

Despite the cold, despite the madness of the last twenty-four hours, she looked serene, as if she were merely resting between long conversations.

I reached out, my trembling fingers gently brushing her cold, pale cheek.

"I have you," I whispered, the tears finally breaking free, hot and stinging against the icy mountain air. "I've got you, Clara. Nobody can touch you now. You saved us. You saved Lily."

Behind me, the sound of approaching sirens broke through the storm. A dozen sets of headlights crested the ridge, sweeping across the limestone quarry as state police cruisers, emergency medical vehicles, and federal pursuit units swarmed the clearing.

Detective Ramos stepped out of the lead cruiser, jogging up to the rear of the transport van. She paused at the threshold, looking down at Clara, then reached out and placed a supportive hand on my shoulder.

"She’s going to receive a full state honors escort back to the capital, Alex," Ramos said quietly. "The governor just signed the executive order. Her testimony, the logs in Lily’s bear, the recordings—they’ve already triggered seventeen federal arrest warrants across three states. Marcus Vance will spend the rest of his life in a federal penitentiary without the possibility of parole."

"And my family?" I asked, not taking my eyes off Clara’s face.

Ramos’s expression darkened. "Your mother has been formally charged with conspiracy to commit first-degree murder and accessory after the fact. The DA refused bail. Derek... the medical examiners confirmed his body was found in the river basin behind the holding facility. Vance’s men executed him during the transport fire, just as Vance claimed."

A cold, bitter knot tightened in my throat. Derek had made his choices, choosing money and cowardice over blood, and the monster he served had discarded him like trash the moment he became an inconvenience.

"And my father?" I asked, looking up.

"Your father and Lily are safe at the county headquarters under the personal protection of the U.S. Marshals," Ramos assured me. "Arthur handed over a second set of handwritten notes Clara left with him six weeks ago detailing the exact financial pathways Vance used to launder money through Beatrice’s mortuary. Your father was her guardian angel, Alex. He kept her secrets safe until you could get home."

I stood up slowly, looking around the bleak, rain-swept quarry.

The nightmare that had begun the moment I walked up my front porch steps was finally ending. The corrupt empire that had poisoned this town had been shattered to its foundations.

I leaned down one last time, pressing a soft kiss to Clara’s cold forehead.

"Rest now, my love," I whispered. "I’ll take care of our baby."
