Chapter 7 - A Mother's Voice

The rhythmic, mechanical hiss of the ventilator was the only sound inside Room 412 of the Surgical Intensive Care Unit.
I sat in the plastic armchair beside Maya’s bed, holding her frail, cold hand between both of mine. Her skin was still pale, translucent like fine porcelain, and blue veins spiderwebbed across her temples. An IV line ran into the back of her hand, carrying broad-spectrum antibiotics, while a central venous catheter delivered vital fluids directly into her chest.
A nurse slipped silently into the room, checked the telemetry monitor, and smiled softly at me.
"Her vitals are stabilizing, Mr. Vance. The fever broke an hour ago. Dr. Sterling says we can extubate her within the next thirty minutes."
I nodded, unable to speak, my thumb gently tracing Maya’s wedding band.
When the respiratory therapist arrived and carefully removed the breathing tube, Maya coughed, a weak, rasping sound that tore through my chest. Her eyelids fluttered, struggling against the heavy sedative fog, before opening slowly.
Her hazel eyes—the eyes I had fallen in love with six years ago in an engineering firm’s cafeteria—looked glassy, unfocused.
Then, she saw me.
"David...?" Her voice was barely a breath, dry and fractured.
"I’m here, baby," I choked out, leaning forward until my forehead rested against her knuckles. Tears that I had held back for twelve hours finally spilled down my cheeks. "I’m right here. I’m not leaving."
Her hand twitched weakly, her fingers trying to curl around mine.
"Liam..." Terror instantly spiked her pulse monitor, the beep accelerating. "David... the baby... where is he? Did they... did they take him?"
"Liam is safe," I said quickly, placing a gentle, reassuring hand on her shoulder. "He’s in the NICU right down the hall. His fever is gone. He’s warm. He’s drinking his formula. The doctors said he’s going to be completely fine, Maya. I swear to you, our son is safe."
Maya let out a long, shuddering sob, her head sinking deeper into the pillow. "I tried, David. I tried so hard to keep him warm. I didn't have enough milk... my body just stopped producing it after the surgery... and they took the cans... Evelyn said I was a parasite... she said I was an unfit mother..."
"Shh, listen to me," I interrupted, my voice thick with emotion, looking directly into her eyes. "You are the strongest, most incredible mother in the world. You kept our son alive while your own body was falling apart. What they did to you was criminal. It was torture."
Tears streamed down her hollow cheeks. "She took my phone, David. Four days ago. She said if I called you, she would tell you that I cheated on you while you were in London. She said she had fake text messages to prove it. She said you would divorce me, take Liam away, and leave me on the street with nothing. I was so scared... my wound started opening two days ago, and every time I stood up, the room went black..."
Hearing the extent of the psychological terror Evelyn had inflicted on my wife made the air in my lungs feel like liquid nitrogen.
She hadn't just neglected Maya. Evelyn had deliberately isolated her, weaponized her deepest insecurities, and threatened to destroy her family if she dared to cry out for help.
"They have no power over you anymore," I said, kissing her forehead, my voice ringing with absolute certainty. "They are never going to hurt you again. They are never going to enter our home. The police are handling them right now."
Maya looked at me, her eyes widening with sudden anxiety. "David... your mother... she’ll turn your whole family against you. She’ll tell everyone you abandoned her."
"Let her," I said coldly. "The whole world is about to see exactly who Evelyn Vance really is."
The door to the room swung open quietly.
Detective Marcus Miller stood in the doorway, a tall, broad-shouldered man with tired eyes and a thick graying mustache. He held a leather notepad in one hand and his gold NYPD detective’s shield clipped to his belt.
"Mr. Vance?" Miller asked quietly. "Mrs. Vance?"
"I’m David Vance. This is my wife, Maya."
Detective Miller stepped inside, his expression somber and respectful. "Mrs. Vance, I’m Detective Miller with the NYPD. I’ve just finished reviewing the surveillance footage from your apartment, as well as the initial medical reports from Dr. Sterling."
He paused, exhaling slowly, shaking his head.
"In my twenty-two years on the force, I have rarely seen such calculated, callous depravity. The Miami-Dade Police Department, in coordination with our office and the State Attorney, has just executed an emergency arrest warrant outside a motel on Biscayne Boulevard."
I looked up, my pulse quickening. "Did you get them?"
Detective Miller gave a tight, grim nod.
May you like
"All four of them. Evelyn Vance, Chloe Vance, Mark Davis, and Ethan Vance are currently in custody."
