Chapter 7 - The Sterling Trap

The peace inside Moretti Manor was short-lived.

By midnight, the storm that had been brewing over the city broke in full fury. Rain lashed against the arched windows of the estate library, where I sat with Dante reviewing shipping manifests.

Over the past four days, our dynamic had shifted into something breathtaking and terrifying. Dante didn't treat me like an ornament or a fragile victim. When he realized the extent of my medical knowledge and administrative skills, he brought me directly into his inner circle. I helped him reorganize the syndicate's supply lines, identifying three separate shell companies Julian Sterling had used to embezzle millions.

More than that, the emotional gravity between us had become irresistible. Every brush of his hand, every late-night conversation over coffee, every lingering glance across a crowded boardroom felt like an open flame near dry timber.

“You haven't slept more than four hours a night since the gala,” I said softly, placing a fresh cup of black coffee beside his laptop.

Dante caught my wrist as I set the cup down, pulling me gently onto his lap. I gasped slightly, but settled against his broad chest, my head resting naturally beneath his chin. His arms wrapped securely around my waist, his fingers tracing the curve of my hip through my silk pajamas.

“I sleep when you’re beside me,” he murmured, kissing the crown of my head. “When you leave the room, the ghosts come back.”

“Dante, the federal agents are arriving tomorrow morning to take Julian and Camila into federal custody,” I said, looking up into his tired eyes. “Once they’re in solitary confinement, the Falcones won't have an inside track. You’ll finally be safe.”

“The Falcones are desperate, Clara,” Dante warned, his jaw tight. “Julian owed them forty million dollars in unpaid drug debts. With Julian arrested and his assets frozen, the Falcones lose everything unless they hit us hard and fast before the transfers are finalized.”

A sudden flicker in the overhead lights interrupted him.

The heavy chandelier above our heads buzzed, blinked twice, and went completely dark.

The emergency generators did not kick in. The estate plummeted into pitch-black silence, broken only by the howl of the wind and the rhythmic drumming of rain against the glass.

Dante’s body went completely rigid beneath me. In a fraction of a second, his romantic warmth vanished, replaced by the lethal instincts of an apex predator.

He slid me off his lap, his hand instantly drawing a suppressed 9mm pistol from beneath his armpit.

“The main power line was severed manually,” Dante whispered, his voice deadly calm. “The backup battery in the cellar was bypassed. Someone on the perimeter let them in.”

Before I could answer, the distant, muffled sound of silenced gunfire echoed from the lower levels of the house.

“Marco!” Dante pressed his earpiece, but only static answered. “Comms are jammed.”

He grabbed my hand, pulling me toward the reinforced steel safe-room door behind the library bookshelf. “Get inside, Clara. Lock it from the interior. The air supply lasts seventy-two hours, and the walls are five-inch titanium. No one gets in without my retinal scan.”

“No,” I refused, pulling back against his grip. “I’m not leaving you.”

“Clara, this isn't an argument!” Dante hissed, his eyes wild with fear—not for himself, but for me. “If they find you, they will use you to break me!”

“Dante, listen to me!” I grabbed the lapels of his suit jacket, forcing him to meet my eyes in the dim moonlight filtering through the curtains. “The sub-basement where Julian and Camila are being held connects directly to the old wine cellar tunnels. If they came in through the service corridors, they aren't here to assassinate you in your sleep. They’re here to extract Julian and hit the weapons armory in the east wing!”

Dante’s eyes widened as the tactical reality hit him. “Julian knows the vault combinations.”

“And I know the wine cellar layout better than anyone in this house,” I said firmly. “I spent eighteen months mapping every crawlspace, every vent, and every emergency drain. If you go through the main corridors, you’ll walk right into an ambush. I can take you behind them through the cellar ductwork.”

Dante stared at me for one breathless second, seeing not a maid to be hidden away, but a fierce partner standing beside him in the storm.

A savage, beautiful grin spread across his face. He reached into his ankle holster, pulled out a compact, lightweight Sig Sauer pistol, flicked off the safety, and slapped it into my hand.

“Do you know how to use this?” he asked.

“Point, squeeze, don't close my eyes,” I recited, checking the chamber with smooth efficiency. “Learned it from an ex-cop in Chicago.”

Dante leaned down, kissed me hard and deep on the mouth—a kiss that tasted of danger, rain, and raw promises—before pulling away with glowing eyes.
