Chapter 7 - The Unveiled Truth

The metal door slammed shut, cutting off the fluorescent light of the hospital corridor.

I gasped, stumbling against the concrete landing, spinning around with my keys clutched between my knuckles like a weapon.

“Did you think you could destroy my life and just walk away?”

Tyler stepped out of the shadows.

He was unrecognizable from the arrogant, polished man who had humiliated me at the restaurant. His suit was wrinkled and stained, his hair wild and unwashed. The cast on his wrist was filthy, and his eyes were hollow, rimmed with deep red circles of mania and desperation. In his uninjured right hand, he held a heavy chrome revolver.

“Tyler,” I said, forcing my voice to remain steady despite the terror clawing at my throat. “Put the gun down.”

“Shut up!” he screamed, his voice cracking, spitting saliva as he waved the barrel at my chest. “You ruined me! My father is in federal prison! Vanessa blocked my number! The banks took my car, my apartment, everything! Because of *you*! You fat, manipulative bitch!”

“You did this to yourself, Tyler,” I said, taking a cautious half-step backward toward the heavy metal door. “You brought your fiancée to my workplace to humiliate me. You picked a fight with Vincent DeLuca. You played with fire and burned your own house down.”

“Vincent DeLuca doesn't give a damn about you!” Tyler shrieked, taking a step toward me, the gun shaking wildly in his grip. “He’s using you! Don't you get it? He wanted my father’s shipping lanes for his European smuggling routes. He needed an excuse to destroy my family without triggering a turf war with the syndicate council! You were just bait, Emily! A fat, stupid piece of meat he used as an excuse to pull the trigger!”

The words hit me like physical blows, reopening old scars. Was it true? Had Vincent orchestrated the whole thing? Had my humiliation just been a convenient corporate takeover?

*No,* my mind screamed, remembering the tenderness in Vincent’s eyes when he looked at me, the way his hands held my body as if I were sacred. *Tyler is a liar. He has always been a liar.*

“You’re wrong,” I said coldly, looking Tyler dead in the eyes. “Vincent saw what you were. A pathetic little boy playing at being a man.”

Tyler’s face contorted in murderous rage. “You’re coming with me. We’re going to the roof. You’re going to call DeLuca and tell him to drop the federal charges against my father and transfer ten million dollars to an offshore account, or I blow your brains out and jump.”

He lunged forward, grabbing my hair with his left hand, shoving the cold steel of the gun against my temple.

Pain flared through my scalp, but something inside me snapped.

For three years, I had shrunk. I had cried. I had apologized for existing.

I was done apologizing.

Before Tyler could drag me up the stairs, I drove my heavy heel down with all my weight directly onto his foot. Tyler howled in agony. In that split second, I drove my elbow backward into his broken wrist.

The sickening snap of his re-fracturing bone echoed through the concrete stairwell. Tyler dropped the gun, dropping to his knees, screaming in blinding pain.

I kicked the revolver down the flight of stairs, where it clattered harmlessly into the lower landing.

The heavy stairwell door banged open with a deafening crash.

Declan burst through, his silenced pistol drawn, followed instantly by three armed security guards.

“Down on the floor! Don't move!” Declan barked, his laser sight centered on Tyler’s forehead.

Two guards tackled Tyler to the concrete, pinning him down and securing his arms in heavy zip-ties as he wept and cursed incoherently.

Declan rushed to my side, his eyes scanning me with deep concern. “Miss Emily! Are you hurt?”

“I’m fine,” I breathed, leaning against the concrete wall, my chest heaving, adrenaline coursing through my veins. “I’m okay.”

Declan let out a breath of profound relief, pressing a button on his earpiece. “Boss, we have her. She’s safe. The package has been neutralized.”

Declan paused, listening to the voice on the other end, his expression turning pale.

“Understood, sir,” Declan said quietly, ending the call. He looked at me, his voice solemn. “Mr. DeLuca is on his way. And Miss Emily... you should know something before you ask him about Tyler’s claims.”

“Know what?” I asked, my voice trembling.

Declan reached into his coat pocket and handed me a small, leather-bound notebook.

“Mr. DeLuca didn't buy Sterling Logistics for shipping routes,” Declan said gently. “He bought it six months ago, secretly, through a shell company. He’s been holding the debt over Tyler’s father for half a year.”

I opened the notebook with shaking fingers. Inside were handwritten notes in Vincent’s bold, elegant handwriting.

*October 14: Emily worked a double shift. Looked exhausted. Sent anonymous tip to management to reduce her hours with full pay.*

*November 2: Tyler Sterling was seen shouting at Emily outside her apartment. Had two men stationed outside her building for protection.*

*November 18: Tyler purchased an engagement ring for Vanessa Caldwell. Preparing to dismantle the Sterling family the moment he hurts her again.*

My breath caught in my throat. Tears flooded my eyes, blurring the ink.

Vincent hadn't used me as an excuse to destroy Tyler.

May you like

Vincent had been preparing to destroy Tyler because Tyler had been hurting me for months before that night at the restaurant.
