Chapter 10 - Thomas Bennett's Confession

*My dearest Mara,*

*If you are reading this, it means Evelyn has finally done what I spent thirty years praying she wouldn't do: she has turned her appetite on our children.*

*I am sorry, my brave girl. I am so deeply sorry.*

*You spent your entire life believing that your mother’s sharpness was a result of her high standards, or that Kendra’s instability was a flaw in her character that you were responsible for repairing. That was the great lie of our household, Mara, and I am as guilty as Evelyn for letting you bear the weight of it.*

*The truth is much darker than a gambling habit.*

*Evelyn’s maiden name was not Vance, nor was she the descendant of the Cape Fear shipping families she loved to brag about at the garden club. When I met your mother in Atlanta in 1984, she was operating under the name Evelyn Ross, working as an estate manager for elderly widowers in Fulton County.*

*She had already been the subject of two civil fraud investigations that were settled out of court by families too proud to endure the public humiliation of a trial.*

*I fell in love with her anyway. I thought my love could heal her brokenness. I thought that by giving her a stable home, a respectable name, and absolute financial security, I could quench that bottomless well of resentment she carried inside her.*

*I was a fool, Mara. Vanity makes fools of the best men.*

*By the time you were ten, I realized she didn't view our family as a home; she viewed it as an enterprise to be harvested. Every conflict between you and Kendra was cultivated by her design. She pitted you against each other because two sisters who trust one another will eventually compare notes, and two sisters who compare notes will see the hand that is picking their pockets.*

*Inside this box, you will find the original records that Evelyn spent four years trying to bury.*

*You will find the complete, unadulterated accounting of the Cape Fear Land Trust—a parcel of ninety-eight acres along the Black River that I purchased in 1996 and placed under a separate corporate veil that Evelyn never knew existed.*

*That land was never part of my personal estate. It was never subject to her usufruct.*

*It is held in the name of the 'Eleanor & Paige Conservation Foundation,' with you and Kendra named as lifetime directors.*

*The timber rights alone are worth three times what Evelyn took from the girls' bank accounts.*

*Take the land, Mara. Take your sister. And build something that doesn't rot from the inside out.*

*Your loving father,*

May you like

*Thomas Bennett*
