Chapter 24 - The Voice Across the Ocean

The phone felt heavy and freezing cold against my ear, the transatlantic static hissing like a coiled serpent. The voice belonged to a man whose shadow had defined the darkest corners of my early academic and professional life—Jonathan Vance, my estranged cousin who had vanished to London twelve years ago after orchestrating a devastating corporate betrayal that nearly ruined our family's architectural legacy long before Howard ever took the reins.
"Jonathan," I whispered, the name catching painfully in my throat. Beside me, Ryan instantly sensed the sudden rigid tension in my posture, his hand tightening protectively over my shoulder.
"Oh, you remember me. I’m deeply touched," Jonathan’s smooth, cultured British-accented voice purred through the speaker, carrying an unmistakable undertone of mockery. "I must congratulate you, cousin. Taking down Uncle Howard and outmaneuvering Arthur Sterling in a federal sting operation? Truly, you’ve finally inherited the family ruthlessness. It’s quite impressive."
"How do you even know about that?" I demanded, my voice hardening as the initial shock gave way to a sharp, defensive fury. "Howard’s arrest only happened a few hours ago!"
"Darling Marissa, the global financial world is remarkably small when you have interests in offshore banking and venture capital," Jonathan replied smoothly, a soft, dry chuckle drifting through the line. "Besides, I have people keeping an eye on the old estate. And more importantly... I have people keeping an eye on *you*."
Ryan’s eyes narrowed into dangerous slits. He leaned in close enough to hear the tinny bleed of audio coming from the phone speaker, his jaw clenching so hard a muscle twitched in his cheek.
"If you're calling to threaten me, save your breath," I said coldly, standing up abruptly from the wooden platform. "You're thousands of miles away, and your little proxy in San Francisco is sitting in a federal holding cell. Whatever game you think you're playing, it's over."
"Is it?" Jonathan’s tone shifted, losing its playful edge and dropping into something chillingly flat and businesslike. "You think Howard was the head of the snake, Marissa? You think a bumbling fool like him could have orchestrated the San Francisco firm collapse five years ago without a proper architect behind the blueprints? I didn't leave for London because I lost, my dear cousin. I left because I was waiting for the foundation to settle so I could buy the whole property for pennies on the dollar."
A cold shudder raced down my spine. The pieces of a horrifying puzzle suddenly clicked violently into place. Howard hadn't acted alone when he forged those documents and destroyed my reputation at Vanguard & Associates. He had been taking orders from across the Atlantic all along.
"What do you want, Jonathan?" I spat out, my grip on the phone tightening until my knuckles turned stark white.
"I don't want a fight, Marissa. I want a partnership," Jonathan replied smoothly. "My flight lands in San Francisco tomorrow morning. I’ll be renting a car and driving up to Sonoma by tomorrow afternoon. I suggest you and your little builder friend clear some time on your schedule. We need to discuss the future of your precious little house—before I decide to repossess the land it's built on."

The line went dead with a sharp click. The dial tone buzzed monotonously in my ear as I slowly lowered the phone, staring blankly out at the sunlit Sonoma valley. The storm we thought we had weathered was nothing more than a passing squall. The hurricane was already on a flight across the ocean.
