Chapter 10 - The Fall of the Sterling Empire

Six months later.

The grand courtroom of the Dirksen Federal Building was packed to maximum capacity. Media sketch artists worked furiously in the front row, while Clara, Martha, and Arthur sat quietly in the reserved seats behind Assistant U.S. Attorney Sarah Chen.

Across the aisle sat Ethan and Olivia Sterling.

The change in their appearance was devastating.

Olivia wore an ill-fitting navy prisoner jumpsuit, her hair completely gray, stripped of dye and professional styling. She sat slumped, her face sunken, her hands cuffed to a chain around her waist.

Ethan sat beside a court-appointed public defender, his designer suits replaced by standard beige detention khakis. He kept his eyes glued to the defense table, too ashamed to look at the gallery, too broken to meet Clara’s gaze.

Judge Castillo adjusted his glasses, looking down from the high wooden bench.

“In the matter of the United States versus Olivia Sterling and Ethan Sterling,” Judge Castillo’s voice boomed through the silent chamber, “this court finds that the defendants engaged in a systematic, multi-year conspiracy to defraud public infrastructure funds, manipulate corporate audits, and suborn perjury through systemic intimidation.”

He turned his stern gaze directly onto Olivia.

“Olivia Sterling, your conduct displays an astonishing contempt for the law and the citizens of this city. You treated the safety of commuter rail passengers as a negotiable line item in your pursuit of personal vanity and social preeminence. You have shown zero remorse.”

Judge Castillo brought down the gavel with a sharp, echoing *crack*.

“On counts one through twelve, this court sentences you to twenty-two years in federal custody at the Federal Correctional Institution in Pekin, Illinois, followed by five years of supervised release. Restitution is ordered in the amount of twenty-four million dollars.”

A collective gasp swept through the gallery. Olivia didn't move. A low, guttural moan escaped her lips as her head drooped onto her chest.

“Ethan Sterling,” the judge continued, turning to the trembling young man. “While this court acknowledges your cooperation with the Department of Justice in providing the internal encryption keys, your willful negligence and knowing execution of forged safety documents directly endangered public safety.”

*Crack.*

“Eight years in federal custody, with restitution ordered at seven million dollars.”

Ethan buried his face in his hands, weeping silently.

As the bailiffs stepped forward to escort the prisoners back to the holding cells, Olivia was hoisted to her feet. For one brief, terrible moment, her eyes met Martha Miller’s.

Martha was sitting upright, her hands folded neatly in her lap, wearing a simple, elegant dark dress. There was no hatred in Martha’s face; there was only pity.

Olivia tried to hold that icy sneer one last time, but she couldn't. Her lip trembled, her eyes watered, and she was dragged through the heavy steel door into the darkness of the cell blocks.

Clara exhaled a long, quiet breath.

Sarah Chen turned around, extending her hand with a broad smile. “It’s over, Clara. Clean sweep.”

Marcus Vance, standing beside them, nodded with profound respect. “The whistleblower bounty was finalized this morning by the SEC commission, Clara. The award has been certified.”

Clara took Marcus’s hand, then Sarah’s. “Thank you, both of you.”

She turned to her parents. Arthur took Martha’s arm, and together, the three of them walked out of the courtroom into the bustling Chicago sunlight.
