Chapter 10 - Sunshine After the Storm

One year later.
The morning air smelled of sweet rain and freshly cut grass.
Claire stood on the wooden deck of her home, holding a warm mug of coffee with both hands. The house looked completely different now. She had repainted the exterior a clean, warm ivory with navy-blue shutters, completely remodeled the garden with hydrangeas and lavender, and replaced the heavy, dark furniture Ben had preferred with bright, open spaces filled with natural light and vibrant modern art.
Her business, *Claire Sterling Interiors*, had exploded over the past twelve months. With the toxic Sterling family excised from her life, Claire’s energy had returned tenfold. She had hired two full-time design associates, secured contracts for three luxury boutique hotels along the coast, and had been featured on the cover of the regional architectural magazine.
Lily’s college fund was fully restored, protected in an irrevocable trust administered solely by Eleanor Martinez’s firm, with extra contributions rolling in each month from Ben’s court-ordered restitution payments.
A cheerful laugh echoed from the backyard.
Lily was running across the lawn, chasing a golden retriever puppy named Barnaby that Claire had adopted from the rescue shelter for Lily’s ninth birthday.
"Mommy! Look at Barnaby!" Lily called out, her face beaming with pure, unadulterated joy. "He found my shoe!"
Claire laughed, walking down the wooden steps into the morning sunshine. "Barnaby, drop it!"
The back gate clicked open, and Claire’s brother David walked into the yard carrying a large, wooden picnic basket, followed by Sarah and four of Lily’s closest friends from school.
"Birthday delivery!" David announced, lifting the basket high. "Handcrafted gourmet burgers, five kinds of cupcakes, and three gallons of strawberry lemonade!"
Lily squealed with delight, running toward her friends as they dropped their backpacks near the patio table and immediately began tossing a frisbee for the puppy.
Sarah walked over to Claire, bumping her hip gently against Claire’s as they watched the children play beneath the shade of the tall oak trees.
"How are you feeling, mama?" Sarah asked, smiling warmly.
Claire looked around her yard. There were no false pretenses. There were no manipulative in-laws demanding loyalty while stealing her peace. There was no husband lurking in the shadows, trading his daughter’s future for cheap approval.
There were only true friends, laughter, blooming flowers, and a little girl whose plate would never, ever be empty again.
"I’m happy," Claire said, taking a deep breath of the crisp, clean air. "I am truly, completely happy."
Lily ran over, out of breath, her cheeks rosy from the chase. She grabbed Claire’s hand and looked up at her with bright, sparkling eyes.
"Mommy, can we cut the cake now?"
May you like
Claire smiled, kneeling down to wrap her arms around her daughter, feeling the steady, rhythmic beat of Lily’s heart against hers.
"Yes, baby," Claire whispered, kissing Lily’s forehead. "You can have as much cake as you want. It’s all yours."
