Chapter 5 - The Frozen Kingdom

By five o'clock that evening, the storm broke across the Vance household.
I didn't have to be there to see it; Marcus Thorne kept me updated via encrypted text messages every thirty minutes as the legal and financial shockwaves rolled through their lives.
My father, Arthur Vance, had spent forty years maintaining the illusion of wealth. He was an "independent commodities consultant"—which meant he spent his days drinking scotch at the club while Daniel quietly covered his golf dues, his country club membership fees, and the ballooning mortgage on the five-bedroom Tudor home in Oakridge.
At 5:15 PM, Arthur’s phone rang.
It was the general manager of the Oakridge Country Club.
*“Mr. Vance, we regret to inform you that your quarterly dues payment of eight thousand four hundred dollars was returned for non-sufficient funds. Additionally, the corporate underwriting guarantee provided by Aegis Shield Cyber has been formally retracted by Mrs. Claire Miller. Under club bylaws, your membership privileges are suspended effective immediately. Please clear your locker by noon tomorrow.”*
Arthur hadn't even finished screaming at the club manager when Vanessa burst through the front door of their house, her designer heels clicking frantically across the foyer.
"Dad!" she shrieked, throwing her purse against the console table. "What the hell is going on? My car was flagged at the salon! The valet told me the license plate had an active repossession notice from the leasing agency! They took the keys, Dad! They towed my car from the curb while people were taking pictures!"
Arthur sat at his mahogany desk in his home study, his face grey. Spread out before him were three certified envelopes delivered via courier forty minutes earlier.
"She did it," Arthur whispered, his voice trembling with a mixture of disbelief and blind fury. "That little bitch actually did it."
Eleanor stormed into the study, her coat still rumpled from her trip to my porch. "Arthur! Did you call the bank? Claire locked me out! She stood there—in that house Daniel bought with our money—and looked me in the eye and mocked me! She refused to let me see the baby! She had the audacity to call me by my first name!"
"Look at these," Arthur rasped, slamming his palm down on the open legal notices.
Eleanor snatched up the first letter. Her eyes scanned the bold legal typography at the top: *NOTICE TO QUIT AND VACATE PREMISES.*
"What is this?" she demanded, her voice climbing into an octave of panic. "This is our house!"
"It never was," Arthur said, his voice breaking. "Five years ago... when my firm went under... Daniel didn't give us a loan to save the house, Eleanor. He bought the mortgage outright through an offshore holding trust. He let us live here rent-free, but the title remained in the trust."
"And Claire controls the trust," Vanessa whispered, her face draining of color. The arrogant sneer she had worn for nine months had completely vanished. "Dad... if she owns the title... where are we supposed to live?"
"We have thirty days," Arthur said hollowly. "Thirty days to vacate, or the county sheriff will physically remove our belongings and place them on the curb."
"No!" Eleanor screamed, tearing the legal document in half and hurling the pieces into the air. "No! That ungrateful, pathetic little whore! We raised her! We fed her! We gave her everything! She wouldn't even have met Daniel if we hadn't sent her to that prep school!"
"Mom, shut up and think!" Vanessa yelled, grabbing her mother’s shoulders. "The money! What about Daniel’s company shares? She can't just keep seventy million dollars to herself! Dad is a board member! Dad has an executive contract!"
Arthur slowly picked up the second letter.
"The advisory board seat was revoked this morning," Arthur said, staring at the floor. "The executive stipend is terminated. And... look at the third letter."
Vanessa snatched the final sheet of paper.
It was an official notice from the federal financial crimes division of a regional commercial bank, accompanied by a formal audit demand from Marcus Thorne’s legal team.
*“RE: Forensic Audit of the Daniel Miller Pediatric Cancer Foundation. It has come to the attention of the primary trustee that over the past twenty-four months, approximately four hundred and twelve thousand dollars in charitable foundation disbursements were routed directly to personal accounts associated with Arthur Vance and Vanessa Vance without board authorization. A formal accounting is demanded within ten business days, failing which the trustee will refer the matter to the state Attorney General for criminal grand jury indictment.”*
Silence dropped over the study like a tombstone.
Vanessa’s knees buckled. She dropped into a leather armchair, clutching her throat.
"They know," Vanessa whimpered. "Dad... they found the foundation transfers. You told me Daniel never checked those statements! You told me he was too busy with the cancer treatments to notice!"
"He was," Arthur whispered, his voice shaking uncontrollably. "He was dying. He wasn't looking at the foundation accounts."
"Daniel wasn't," Eleanor said, her voice dropping into a terrifying, icy rasp as she glared out the window toward the hills of Crestview Ridge. "Daniel didn't know. But she did. She waited until the baby was born. She waited until we were completely vulnerable. She played us."
"We can fight this," Vanessa said, sitting up, her voice tinged with hysteria. "We go public! We go to the press! We tell everyone she abandoned her grieving family, had an affair, and stole her dead husband's fortune from his rightful heirs! If we destroy her reputation, the board of Aegis Shield will force her out! They won't let a scandal-ridden single mother run a billion-dollar tech company!"
Arthur looked up, a desperate, ugly spark reigniting in his eyes. "The media loves a dead-tech-titan scandal."
Eleanor straightened her spine, pulling her pastel coat around herself like armor.

"Call the local news stations," Eleanor said coldly. "Call the gossip blogs. Hire a publicist with the last credit card that still works. If Claire wants to treat us like strangers... we will make sure the entire world knows what kind of monster she really is."
