Chapter 4 - The Lion's Den

The third floor of the Hubbard warehouse was not a refuge; it was a command center.

Against the far wall stood four towering server racks, their green and blue LEDs pulsing in synchronized rhythms. Multiple ultra-wide monitors displayed encrypted spreadsheets, live satellite tracking maps of Lake Michigan shipping lanes, and real-time security camera feeds from inside the downtown headquarters of Vale Logistics.

"You're not hiding from him," I breathed, watching the monitors cycle through internal memos from Dominic Vale’s corporate accounts. "You're tearing his empire apart."

Caleb watched my lips. A faint, sad smile touched the corner of his mouth. He walked over to a small electric kettle, poured boiling water into a ceramic mug, and handed me a cup of black tea with two sugar packets.

*My father thinks he is an emperor,* Caleb signed, his movements measured and precise. *In reality, he is a parasite. For fourteen years, I have let him parade me through country clubs and boardrooms as a tragic prop. He speaks of me as if I am an empty room. Because he thinks I cannot understand, he holds his darkest meetings right in front of me.*

He turned his tablet to face me again, showing a scanned document dated October 14, 2010. It was an insurance claim and an arson investigation report for a lake house in Geneva, Wisconsin.

*He didn't just survive the explosion that took my hearing,* Caleb signed, his eyes darkening to a dangerous pitch. *He set the timer. My mother had compiled three ledgers detailing his money laundering for the Balkan cartel. She was going to the Department of Justice. He blew the house to the foundation while she was inside. I was thirteen. I was supposed to be in the boat with her.*

A cold chill ran down my spine, far colder than the snow falling outside. "He murdered his own wife?"

*And he will murder anyone who threatens his throne,* Caleb answered. *Including you, Hannah. The moment you signed to me tonight, Dominic realized you broke through the wall he built around me. He ordered Marcus to eliminate you because he cannot allow a rogue variable to communicate with his heir.*

"So what do I do?" Panic edged into my voice. "I can't go back to my apartment. I have no family left. My brother died six years ago. There’s no one to protect me."

Caleb stepped closer. He was tall—nearly six-foot-two—and the broadness of his chest made the space between us feel intensely small. He reached out, his fingers hesitating for a fraction of a second before gently tucking a stray strand of hair behind my ear. His touch was electric, startlingly tender for a man who had grown up in the jaws of a monster.

*I will protect you,* he signed with fierce deliberate certainty. *But we must change the game. Tomorrow morning at nine, Dominic will arrive at his estate in Lake Forest to force the power-of-attorney signing. We will not run from him. We will walk directly into his house.*

"Are you insane?" I stared at him. "He wants me dead!"

*He wants the waitress who knows too much dead,* Caleb corrected, his fingers flying with razor-sharp precision. *He does not want Caleb Vale’s newly hired, court-appointed sign language interpreter dead. Tomorrow morning, you walk into Vale Manor with an official state badge and legal clearance. If he touches you while the state monitors are present, his conservatorship petition collapses instantly.*

He picked up a sleek black folder from the desk and slid it into my hands. Inside was an official laminated credential from the Illinois Department of Human Services, bearing my name, my photo, and an authentic state seal, registered under emergency appointment.

"How did you get this?"

*I own the servers that generate the licenses,* Caleb signed with a ghost of a smirk. *Dominic thinks power comes from guns and envelopes of cash. He doesn't understand that the modern world is built on fiber-optic cables. Sleep for four hours, Hannah. Tomorrow, you enter the lion’s den—not as a servant, but as my voice.*
