Chapter 7 - The Sting at Dawn

The room exploded into tactical chaos.

“He’s using terror tactics,” Briggs barked, strapping on a Kevlar vest beneath his windbreaker. “He doesn't have Lily. Lily is down the hall behind three locked security doors. He’s bluffing to force an immediate confrontation so he can secure your physical presence for the biometric override.”

“He thinks I’m a coward,” I said.

My voice was dead level. No tremors. No tears.

Both federal agents and Officer Miller turned to look at me.

“He spent seven years treating me like a delicate flower that needed sheltering,” I continued, standing upright, staring directly at Agent Briggs. “He thinks I’m the weak, sheltered girl who cried over her father’s antique watch. He thinks I will collapse under pressure and hand him whatever he wants to protect my daughter.”

“Mrs. Campbell, we are not letting you anywhere near Pier 4,” Briggs stated firmly. “We have an HRT (Hostage Rescue Team) unit twenty minutes out. We will deploy snipers and box him in.”

“If he sees your tactical vans, he runs,” Mr. Henderson countered, stepping between Briggs and me. “Julian Mercer is a ghost. If he slips through your fingers today, Emily and Lily will spend the rest of their lives looking over their shoulders, living in witness protection under fake names, jumping every time a twig snaps. You want to catch him? You need bait that looks authentic.”

“No,” Briggs said. “Too high of a liability.”

“I’m going,” I said.

I walked over to the family room door and looked through the glass. Lily was sleeping peacefully, her thumb tucked in her mouth, her hair spilling over the wool blanket.

Everything I was, everything I had ever loved, rested inside that tiny girl. I had spent years letting a sociopath dictate our family life, trusting him with my finances, my home, my peace of mind.

I was done being prey.

“You wire me,” I told Briggs, turning back with fire burning in my chest. “You put a tracking transponder in my shoe and an audio feed in my collar. You stage your teams out of sight. I will walk onto Pier 4. I will look that bastard in the eye, and I will keep him talking until your net drops.”

Briggs stared at me for five agonizing seconds. He looked at Mr. Henderson, who gave him a solemn, unyielding nod.

“If this goes sideways for even a second, we breach,” Briggs conceded, turning to Young. “Get the technical surveillance kit. Outfit Mrs. Campbell. And call the Harbor Master. Pier 4 is locked down as of right now.”

Fifteen minutes later, I stood in front of the precinct bathroom mirror. Beneath my thick woolen sweater, an ultra-thin audio receiver was taped flush against my sternum. A GPS micro-beacon was wedged into the sole of my left boot.

I washed the soot and tears from my face with freezing water, tied my dark hair back into a tight ponytail, and stared at my reflection.

The meek suburban housewife was gone.
