Chapter 8 - The Cracking Empire

Before Grant could turn his head, the steel door beneath him blew inward with the force of a battering ram.

Captain Miller didn't lead with words. He led with an eighty-pound hydraulic rescue spreader—the "Jaws of Life."

The steel tool, driven by high-pressure hydraulics, struck the first armed bodyguard directly in the shoulder, throwing him violently down the concrete flight into the wall with a sickening crunch of breaking bone.

Behind Miller came four towering firefighters carrying halligan bars and flat-head axes.

“Down! Drop the weapon or I will split you in half!” a firefighter roared, pinning the second guard against the railing before the man could raise his weapon.

Grant Wexler stumbled backward, his composure shattering like glass. He turned to flee down the stairs, but the lower exit swung open with a deafening bang.

Six uniformed Chicago Police officers, tactical shields raised and carbines leveled, flooded the landing.

Behind them walked Elena Vance—Arthur Vance’s estranged daughter, and the most feared Assistant United States Attorney in the Northern District of Illinois.

“Grant Wexler,” Elena’s voice cut through the damp stairwell like a guillotine. “Keep your hands where I can see them, or my tactical team will turn you into a sieve.”

Grant froze, trapped between an army of firefighters above and federal agents below.

“Do you know who I am?” Grant sneered, his mask of sophistication slipping into a manic, rabid baring of teeth. “Elena, your father is on my payroll! Half the judiciary in this city answers to my trust!”

“Not anymore, Grant,” Elena said, stepping onto the landing and holding up a digital tablet displaying live federal warrants. “At 8:12 p.m., Detective Marcus Cole transmitted twenty-two gigabytes of mirrored cloud server footage directly to the Department of Justice. At 8:15 p.m., your mother handed the Apex Logistics ledger to the FBI.”

Grant’s face drained of every drop of color. “My… my mother?”

“Your mother,” Elena confirmed with icy satisfaction. “The FBI is currently raiding your penthouse on Lake Shore Drive, your private docks in Calumet, and your father’s old vault. Arthur Vance was taken into federal custody ten minutes ago in the hospital lobby. He is already singing like a canary to save his own skin.”

Grant looked up at me, standing on the landing above him.

The fear I had seen in his eyes when my water broke was back, magnified a thousand times over. It was the naked, pathetic terror of a predator who had suddenly realized he was inside the slaughterhouse.

“Hannah…” Grant stammered, raising his hands slowly as police officers advanced up the stairs with zip-ties and handcuffs. “Hannah, we can talk about this. I’ll give you five million. Ten million. Whatever you need for the girl—”

“My daughter’s name is Grace,” I said, looking down at him from the top of the stairs, my voice ringing with cold, unyielding finality. “And she will grow up in a world where you don't exist.”

Two police officers slammed Grant face-first against the concrete wall. The sickening sound of his nose breaking on the stone was the sweetest music I had ever heard. Metal handcuffs ratcheted around his wrists with brutal, uncompromising force.

“Grant Wexler, you are under arrest for attempted murder, aggravated assault of a pregnant person, witness tampering, and federal racketeering,” an agent barked, wrenching him backward down the stairs.

Grant screamed obscenities, thrashing against the officers as they dragged him down into the cold rain of the ambulance bay, his tailored suit torn, his face smeared with his own blood.

The door swung shut.

The stairwell fell silent, save for the soft, steady hum of baby Grace’s ventilator.

My knees finally gave out.

I collapsed against the concrete, but I didn't hit the floor. Marcus, bleeding from a graze on his shoulder, caught me in his arms, while Captain Miller supported the other side.

“You held the line, Little Bird,” Marcus whispered, his eyes wet with tears. “You brought her home.”

May you like

I looked at the acrylic pod beside me. Inside, beneath the soft glow of the monitor, Grace opened her tiny, dark blue eyes for the very first time.
