Chapter 11 - The Fall of the Empire

At 04:30 AM, the glass-and-steel monolith of the Vance Tower overlooking the inner harbor was surrounded.

Not by Henderson’s corrupt city precinct.

By forty armored tactical vehicles belonging to the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the State Police Special Response Team, and two squads of Marine Corps Military Police from the nearby naval yard.

High above the street, in the ninety-story penthouse suite, Marcus Vance stood behind his floor-to-ceiling mahogany desk, frantically packing stacks of bearer bonds and foreign passports into an aluminum briefcase.

Detective Henderson stood beside him, his police uniform disheveled, sweating through his shirt, frantically dialing numbers on his burner phone.

"Nobody's picking up!" Henderson screamed, slamming the phone onto the desk. "The precinct dispatch isn't answering! The harbor authority cut the fuel lines to your helicopter!"

"Shut up!" Vance barked, his face twisted in aristocratic fury. "Carter will take the fall! We’ll say Carter went rogue! We have judges on the state bench who will throw out any civilian indictment—"

The heavy oak doors of the penthouse exploded inward in a shower of splinters and tactical flashbangs.

*BANG-FLASH.*

Henderson shrieked, dropping to the floor with his hands over his ears.

Through the white smoke, four federal tactical agents entered, their submachine guns raised, their laser sights cutting through the haze.

Behind them walked a tall, gray-haired man in a dress Marine Corps uniform—Colonel Jack Reynolds, my former battalion commander.

And behind Colonel Reynolds walked me.

Vance stepped back against the floor-to-ceiling glass, his hands trembling as he reached toward his desk drawer.

"Don't do it, Marcus," Colonel Reynolds said, his voice carrying the absolute authority of thirty years of command. "Every federal agency on the Eastern Seaboard has the encrypted files your auditor collected. Your accounts in the Caymans are frozen. Your construction permits are revoked. And your enforcer, Brock, is currently singing like a canary in the federal trauma ward."

Vance looked past the agents, his eyes locking onto mine.

He saw the mud on my boots, the blood on my hands, and the cold, unyielding look in my eyes.

"You..." Vance sneered, trying to muster a shred of his former arrogance. "You’re just a sergeant. A common soldier. You think you can destroy an empire that built this city?"

"I didn't destroy your empire, Vance," I said, walking slowly across the carpet until I was three feet from his desk. "My wife did. With a laptop and her bare hands."

Two federal agents moved in, kicking Henderson onto his stomach and twisting his arms behind his back with the harsh *clink* of steel handcuffs.

A third agent grabbed Vance, pinning the billionaire against his own mahogany desk, reading him his constitutional rights as they snapped the cuffs around his manicured wrists.

As they dragged Vance past me, he struggled against the agents' grip. "I have rights! I demand my attorney!"

Nobody answered him.

The empire had fallen.
