Chapter 13 - The Horizon Line

The flight line at Joint Base Andrews was bathed in the harsh orange glow of the sodium security towers as the sun dipped below the horizon, painting the sky in violent streaks of purple and bruised blue.

The Gulfstream C-37 sat on the tarmac, its twin jet engines whining in a low, continuous idle, exhaust heat distorting the lights of the runway behind it.

I stood at the bottom of the airstairs, my duffel bag slung over my shoulder, the crimson-bordered orders tucked securely inside my leather briefcase.

Major Nathan Black walked up beside me, carrying a secure satellite communication case.

"We just received the first operational telemetry from the task force staging area at Fort Bragg," Black said, holding out a digital tablet. "The audit teams have already locked down three warehouses in Savannah and two distribution hubs in San Diego. We've already uncovered forty million dollars in unmanifested night-vision gear."

"That's just the tip of the iceberg, Nathan," I said, glancing at the screen. "Arthur and Carter weren't the only ones playing this game. When a supply line rots, it rots from both ends."

"Are you ready for this, Colonel?" Black asked, studying my face carefully. "The moment we touch down in Bragg, every contractor on the Eastern Seaboard is going to be calling their congressmen. The political blowback is going to be biblical."

I adjusted the strap of my bag, looking up at the sleek white fuselage of the transport aircraft.

"Let them call," I said. "They had their turn. Now it's ours."

As I stepped onto the first rung of the metal stairs, the secure tactical transceiver at my hip let out a sharp, double chime—the encrypted signal indicating a priority incoming communication directly from the National Military Command Center.

I pulled the device from its holster and tapped the thumbprint scanner.

A single line of text flashed across the illuminated green screen:

*FLASH TRAFFIC // TOP SECRET // IMMEDIATE ACTION REQUIRED*

*INCIDENT REPORT: SPECIAL OPERATIONS OUTPOST 'SHADOW-4', TAJIKISTAN BORDER.*

*TRANSACTION KEY DETECTED MATCHING CREDENTIALS: VANCE, DAVID (MAJ).*

*TIME OF TRANSMISSION: THREE MINUTES AGO.*

The breath locked in my throat.

The tarmac, the roar of the jet engines, the cold evening wind—everything fell away into a deafening, terrifying vacuum.

David’s cryptographic key had just been used.

Not in a domestic warehouse. Not on a port manifest in Charleston.

In an active combat zone on the Afghan-Tajik border. Three minutes ago.

"Colonel?" Major Black asked, noticing my sudden stillness. "Is something wrong?"

I stared at the glowing green letters on the screen, my heart pounding against my ribs with the force of an artillery shell. Arthur Vance was in custody. Bradley Carter was in Quantico. Every server associated with Vanguard Logistics had been seized and isolated four hours ago.

Which meant there was only one of two possibilities left in the dark, classified corners of this war.

Either Arthur had a partner we hadn't discovered yet, operating deep inside the Central Asian theater...

Or my twin brother hadn't died in that sandstorm in Al-Qaim after all.

"Colonel Vance?" Black repeated, his voice tense, sensing the sudden shift in the air. "What are your orders?"

I looked up from the screen toward the dark, endless horizon stretching westward over the Virginia mountains, where the first stars were beginning to pierce the twilight.

I closed the encrypted device, slipped it back into my pocket, and took the next step up the stairs.

"Tell the pilots to change our flight plan," I said, my voice steady, sharp, and cold as steel. "We’re not going to Fort Bragg."
