Chapter 17 - The Smoking Gun

Judge Vance leaned forward, resting her forearms on the mahogany bench, her piercing green eyes fixed entirely on Sterling Vance.
"Furthermore, Mr. Vance," the judge continued, her voice dropping into a low, menacing register, "this court has received and unsealed a supplementary filing submitted by the defense this morning—a certified transcript and audio recording of a meeting held in Room 4E512 of the Pentagon on October 18th."
Sterling Vance’s smug smile vanished in a microsecond. The color completely drained from his face, leaving him looking like a ghost in a bespoke suit.
"Your... Your Honor," Sterling stammered, his polished composure shattering completely. "That... that recording was classified administrative proceedings! It was obtained illegally and violates—"
"It was obtained by an enlisted soldier defending herself against institutional extortion and witness tampering by Department of Defense personnel," Judge Vance interrupted, her voice ringing with absolute authority. "And let me assure you, Counselor, when a government agency attempts to coerce a witness into signing a falsified affidavit to protect a disgraced officer's pension, it ceases to be a classified administrative matter and becomes a matter of federal criminal obstruction of justice."
She tapped a single sheet of paper on her desk.
"According to the audio transcript," Judge Vance read aloud, her voice carrying clearly to every corner of the courtroom, "Lieutenant Colonel Vance explicitly threatened First Sergeant Miller with a retaliatory grade reduction and general discharge if she refused to sign a false statement exonerating your client. Is that your idea of due process, Mr. Vance?"
The press gallery erupted into a sudden, chaotic wave of whispered murmurs and frantic note-taking. Flashbulbs began to pop from the back of the room despite the bailiff's immediate calls for order.
At the plaintiff's table, former Colonel Dewitt buried his face in his hands, his shoulders shaking slightly. He had finally realized that his desperate attempt to salvage his ego and his pension had not only failed, but had dragged his co-conspirators out into the open for the entire world to see.
"Your Honor," Sterling Vance attempted to salvage the wreck, his voice trembling slightly. "We move for an immediate recess to consult with our client—"
"Motion denied," Judge Vance said flatly. "This case is dismissed with prejudice. Furthermore, this court is issuing an immediate referral to the United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia to open a criminal grand jury investigation into obstruction of justice and witness tampering by the individuals involved in the Pentagon meeting."
She slammed her gavel down once. The sharp crack echoed through the courtroom like a gunshot, sealing the fate of the conspiracy once and for all.
