Chapter 7 - The Final Mask Falls

The gray eyes that Sarah loved more than life itself were unfocused, swimming in a haze of heavy medication and physical trauma, but as they found Sarah’s face, they sharpened with unmistakable awareness.
Michael’s fingers twitched against the sheet, reaching out with agonizing slowness until they brushed the lace of her sleeve.
"Sarah..." he rasped again, his voice little more than a dry, sandpaper whisper against the plastic of the mask.
Sarah fell to her knees beside the gurney, instantly taking his hand in both of hers, pressing his cold knuckles against her tear-stained cheek. "I’m here, Michael. I’m right here. Don't try to speak. You're safe. You're completely safe."
A tear slipped from the corner of Michael’s eye, tracing a path down his hollow cheek. His chest rose and fell in steady, independent rhythm. The heart monitor beeped in a calm, healthy cadence: *seventy-two... seventy-four... seventy-two.*
In the front row, Eleanor Thompson dropped to her knees on the marble floor. She crawled forward like a broken beggar, her designer gown tearing against the wood of the communion rail, her face streaked with black mascara and wracked with sobs.
"Michael... oh, my sweet boy... Michael, forgive me!" Eleanor wept, reaching her trembling, manicured hands through the wooden spindles toward the gurney. "I didn't know! I swear to God Almighty, I didn't know Victoria was going to hurt you! I was weak... I was so terrified of being poor again... but I never wanted this! Michael, please look at your mother!"
Michael turned his head slowly on the pillow.
His gaze fell upon Eleanor. There was no rage in his eyes. There was no fury. There was only an immense, profound sadness—the kind of look a man gives to a ruin that can never be rebuilt.
Michael did not reach out to her. He did not speak to her. Instead, he tightened his weak fingers around Sarah’s hand, pulling her slightly closer, turning his face away from his mother and resting his cheek against Sarah’s palm.
The rejection was absolute. It was more devastating than any scream or curse could have ever been.
Eleanor let out a broken, guttural wail, collapsing forward until her forehead touched the floorboards, weeping for the son she had betrayed and the family empire she had helped destroy.
Detective Ward stepped up to the communion rail, looking down at the ruined matriarch. "Eleanor Thompson. You need to come with us. The grand jury will decide the extent of your criminal liability, but as of right now, you are being taken into custody as an accessory to attempted capital murder."
Eleanor did not resist. Two female officers gently lifted the weeping woman to her feet and led her down the center aisle. The guests, who had once bowed and scraped for an invitation to Eleanor’s Southampton galas, turned their faces away in disgust as she was escorted past them.
Sarah stood up slowly, keeping Michael’s hand firmly anchored in hers. She turned to Dr. Thorne. "Can we move him safely now?"
"Yes," Dr. Thorne nodded, a genuine smile breaking across his exhausted face. "The potassium has cleared his system, and his neurological response is extraordinary. We have a legitimate St. Jude’s intensive care ambulance waiting at the private pavilion entrance. Detective Ward’s men have swept the vehicle. He's going directly to a secure trauma suite under armed police guard."
Sarah nodded. She leaned down over Michael, brushing a lock of dark hair from his damp forehead. "We're going to the hospital now, my love. It's over. The truth is out. Every single one of them is going to pay."
Michael’s lips curved into a faint, weak smile beneath the mask. He squeezed her fingers with a surprising surge of strength.
"My... wife," he whispered through the plastic.
Sarah’s heart soared, a radiant smile breaking through her tears. "Yes. Your wife. Always."
As the legitimate medical team wheeled the gurney down the altar ramp toward the private exit, Sarah turned back to the cavernous ballroom one last time.
Five hundred people stood in stunned, motionless silence. The Thompson Global board members, the high-society socialites, the politicians who had turned a blind eye to Julian’s corruption—all of them stared at Sarah Bennett in awe and terror.
Sarah looked upon them without a shred of fear.

"The reception is canceled," Sarah announced, her voice echoing off the vaulted ceilings with absolute, unquestioned authority. "The board of Thompson Global will convene tomorrow morning at eight o'clock sharp at St. Jude’s Hospital. Bring your resignations, or bring your defense attorneys. Because my husband is awake. And the reckoning has only just begun."
