Chapter 8 - The Media Firestorm

By ten-thirty that morning, the grand auditorium at Vale Global Headquarters in the Financial District was packed to standing room only. Over a hundred journalists, photojournalists, and television broadcast crews jostled for position beneath the blinding spotlights.

Outside the skyscraper, protestors and curious onlookers were gathered behind police barricades. The internet had turned the story into a national obsession. On TikTok and Twitter, the hashtag #CateringGrifter had racked up fifty million views, fueled by Celeste Winthrop’s relentless PR team leaking staged rumors about Maya Bennett’s supposedly criminal background.

Backstage in the VIP holding suite, Celeste Winthrop was pacing in front of a floor-to-ceiling mirror. She was wearing an immaculate cream tailored dress, her blonde hair swept up in an elegant twist. Beside her, Senator Winthrop was adjusting his cuffs, looking smug.

"I told you Adrian would see reason," Winthrop murmured to his daughter. "He called a mandatory press conference. He’s going to announce our wedding date and publicly clear his name from that caterer's stunt. He has no choice. Vale Global's stock dipped two percent at the opening bell. Adrian understands money better than anyone."

Celeste smiled, applying a fresh coat of nude lip gloss. "I want that woman arrested today, Dad. I want footage of her in handcuffs. That little brat needs to be put into foster care to teach these lower-class parasites a lesson about trying to extort their betters."

The door to the holding room opened, and a security guard in a Vale Global uniform stepped in.

"Senator Winthrop, Miss Winthrop. Mr. Vale is taking the podium now. You are requested on stage."

"Of course," Celeste said sweetly, picking up her designer handbag. "Let's go put an end to this absurdity."

They stepped through the heavy backstage curtains into the blinding lights of the auditorium. The flashbulbs fired in an instantaneous, deafening wave. Hundreds of shutter clicks sounded like a swarm of mechanical insects.

Adrian Vale was already standing behind the clear acrylic lectern. He wore a sharp navy bespoke suit, his face set in an unreadable, chiseled mask.

To the side of the stage sat Eleanor Vale. And beside Eleanor sat Maya Bennett and little Lucia.

When Celeste saw Maya sitting there—not in a server’s uniform, but dressed in an understated, breathtaking emerald green silk dress, with Lucia wearing a brand-new lavender Sunday dress—her smile faltered.

"What are *they* doing on the stage?" Celeste hissed under her breath to her father.

"Quiet," Winthrop whispered, though his eyes darted nervously around the perimeter of the room, noting six armed state troopers standing near the exits who did not look like private security guards.

Adrian leaned toward the microphone. The room instantly fell into a dead, electric silence.

"Thank you all for coming on such short notice," Adrian began, his deep voice carrying through the auditorium with absolute authority. "Over the last twelve hours, the public has been fed a carefully coordinated series of lies regarding the events that occurred at my private charity gala last night."

The journalists leaned forward, microphones thrust high into the air.

"A video was leaked," Adrian continued, "purporting to show a catering employee attempting to extort money from my fiancée, Celeste Winthrop, by having her child perform a rehearsed routine."

Adrian looked directly at Celeste, who had walked up to stand beside him, plastering a solemn, supportive expression onto her face for the cameras.

"The truth," Adrian said coldly, "is that Miss Winthrop publicly humiliated a six-year-old child in front of two hundred people, offering her one million dollars because Miss Winthrop believed a child of a service worker was beneath human dignity."

Murmurs rippled through the press corps. Celeste’s eyes widened in horror. "Adrian, what are you saying?!" she whispered frantically away from the microphone.

Adrian ignored her. He touched the control pad on the podium.

The massive, hundred-foot digital screens behind the stage flickered to life.

"This is the unedited security footage with high-definition directional audio from the ballroom," Adrian announced.

The screen played the complete, raw footage.

The entire press corps watched in high resolution as Celeste sneered, pointed her glass at Lucia, and laughed: *“Outdance me, sweetheart, and I’ll give your mother a million dollars.”* The audio captured the cruel, mocking tone, the malicious snickers of Celeste’s inner circle, and the calm, dignified response of Maya stepping forward: *“She’ll dance. But not for your money.”*

Gasps echoed across the room. Several journalists immediately began typing furiously on their laptops.

"No... that’s taken out of context!" Celeste cried out, stepping toward the microphone. "Adrian, you're editing it!"

"Furthermore," Adrian continued, his voice drowning her out completely, "last night, my family commissioned an immediate genetic screening through Massachusetts General Hospital. The certified laboratory results were delivered to my hands three hours ago."

Adrian turned to look at Maya. His eyes softened with immense pride.

"The woman you see seated on this stage is not a catering server looking for a handout," Adrian declared, his voice ringing like a bronze bell across the hall. "She is Maya Bennett Vale. The biological daughter of the late Rosalind Vale, and the direct, rightful heiress to thirty percent of Vale Global Logistics and the entire Vale family estate."

The auditorium exploded into pandemonium. Flashbulbs went off in a blinding, continuous frenzy. Journalists jumped to their feet, screaming questions over one another.
