Chapter 4 - The Bait in the Holding Cell

By Thursday, the initial shock of the arrests had mutated into an all-out media storm. Outside St. Jude’s Hospital, news vans lined the curbs. The story of a high-society scion attempting to maim his brilliant heiress wife—and the revelation that the wife was a legendary former prosecutor who had quietly wired her entire mansion—was viral catnip.
Every tabloid in the country was running the headline: *THE HEIRESS'S TRAP.*
Inside the Cook County Jail holding facility, Daniel Sterling was not dealing well with reality.
He had spent seventy-two hours in an orange jumpsuit. His slick, salon-styled hair was limp and greasy; his jaw was covered in patchy, unkempt stubble. When his defense attorney, a sleek public-relations fixer named Frank Geller, sat across from him in the glass-partitioned visitation booth, Daniel didn't even wait for Geller to put down his briefcase.
"Where is my bail, Frank?!" Daniel hissed into the phone receiver, spraying spit onto the glass. "Why am I still in this cage with crackheads and murderers?! Pay whatever they want! Post the mansion! Post the firm’s reserve fund!"
Geller looked at Daniel with the weary pity of a man who realized his client had completely sunk the ship and was now demanding dry towels.
"Daniel, be quiet and listen to me," Geller said in a low, sharp tone. "There is no bail. The judge viewed the security feed. The prosecution upgraded the charges against both you and your mother to Attempted Murder in the First Degree, Aggravated Mayhem, and Conspiracy to Defraud."
Daniel’s breath caught in his throat. "Mayhem? That’s… that’s an antiquated charge! She dropped oil, Frank! Clara is alive! She was sitting up in bed talking to the detectives!"
"She has second- and third-degree burns across thirty-five percent of her upper body, Daniel," Geller said coldly. "The state attorney is running for attorney general next year. He wants your head on a spike. But that’s not your biggest problem."
"What could possibly be worse than this?!"
"Sterling & Croft collapsed this morning."
Daniel froze, the phone slipping slightly in his sweaty palm. "What?"
"Phoenix Holdings called the forty-two million dollar collateral loan. Croft tried to block it in emergency chancery court, but Phoenix’s attorneys presented the full audit trail showing you had embezzled nearly seven million from the firm's escrow accounts over the last eighteen months to finance your mother's European shopping sprees and your Cayman accounts."
"How… how did they get those statements?" Daniel stammered, his skin turning a sickly gray. "Those accounts were password-encrypted with two-factor keys held on my personal laptop!"
"Your laptop was seized from your master bedroom under a search warrant obtained by Clara's civil team," Geller answered. "Daniel, who owns Phoenix Holdings?"
"I don't know!" Daniel shouted, slamming his fist against the metal shelf beneath the partition. "Some offshore hedge fund my father mentioned years ago!"
"No," Geller said quietly. "Phoenix Holdings is a wholly owned subsidiary of Clara’s family trust. Your wife didn't just catch you on camera, Daniel. She’s owned your firm since Tuesday afternoon. Croft resigned an hour ago and is currently singing to the Securities and Exchange Commission to save his own license. They’re freezing all of your domestic assets. Your cards are canceled. Your mother’s penthouse is being padlocked by the sheriff this afternoon."
"No!" Daniel screamed. "They can't touch Vivian! That penthouse is registered to a private family land trust!"
"The land trust you funded with stolen foundation money," Geller said, shaking his head. "Every thread you pulled is tied to an anvil, and it’s all dropping on you at once. Unless…"
Daniel leaned into the glass, his eyes wide with desperate hope. "Unless what? Frank, please. I have five hundred thousand hidden in a bearer-bond account in Zurich. It’s yours. Just get me out of here!"
"Clara sent an emissary," Geller said, checking his watch. "Arthur Vance is outside right now. Clara is willing to make an offer regarding the sentencing recommendation on the financial fraud counts."
"She’s willing to deal?" Daniel exhaled, a sick, arrogant grin returning to his mouth. "I knew it. She loves me. She’s hurt, she’s acting out because of what Mother did, but she loves me! What does she want? An apology? A public statement?"
Geller looked at his client with utter disgust.
"She wants your mother, Daniel. She wants you to sign a complete, unreserved confession stating that Vivian plotted the attack for three months, that Vivian procured the accelerants, and that you were an unwitting bystander who only covered it up out of family loyalty."
Daniel didn't hesitate for even a single second.

"Bring the papers," Daniel whispered instantly. "Give me the pen."
