Chapter 3 - The Cold Turkey Reality

Thirty minutes earlier, at the prestigious High Ridge estate, Arthur Vance had been enjoying his morning routine. Dressed in a monogrammed silk dressing gown, he poured himself a freshly brewed cup of dark roast coffee and opened the morning paper at the head of the marble-topped breakfast bar.

Eleanor was humming in the adjacent sitting room, flipping through an interior design catalog, looking at swatches of raw silk for the formal dining room curtains.

"We really need to replace that dining rug today, Arthur," Eleanor called out, her voice dripping with irritation. "The water stain from last night soaked right into the wool. I had the maid scrub it twice, but you can still see the outline. Honestly, the lack of consideration Claire showed... She could have stood up the moment she felt a twinge instead of ruining a four-thousand-dollar antique."

Arthur took a slow sip of his coffee. "She was being dramatic, Eleanor. She's always had a flair for melodrama. Remember when she was seven and claimed she had an ear infection the day of our country club brunch? Always looking for attention."

"Well, she’s paying for the replacement," Eleanor sniffed. "I sent her a text detailing the invoice. I haven't heard back, but she knows better than to ignore me. And you need to speak with her about that tech venture you wanted to fund. We'll need Daniel’s estate to release at least two hundred thousand by Friday."

"I'll handle it," Arthur said dismissively. "Claire has always done what she’s told when it comes to the money. Daniel left her in charge of the company, but she doesn't have an ounce of business sense. She'll sign whatever I put in front of her."

Arthur picked up his iPad to log into his private wealth management portal to check the monthly twelve-thousand-dollar deposit that normally landed on the first. It was the first of the month, and he had an appointment at his golf club at noon to settle his annual membership dues.

He typed in his credentials. The screen flashed red:

*ACCESS DENIED. ACCOUNT STATUS: CLOSED.*

Arthur frowned, adjusting his reading glasses. "Damn servers. Always glitching."

He opened his banking app on his phone and dialed the priority private wealth line. After three rings, a representative answered.

"Good morning, Mr. Vance. How may I assist you today?"

"Yes, my online portal is malfunctioning," Arthur barked. "It's showing my primary checking account as closed. I have automatic drafts scheduled for today, including my country club dues. Fix it immediately."

There was a brief pause, followed by the sound of rapid typing. When the representative returned, her voice was polite but distinctly guarded.

"Mr. Vance, I’m looking at the file now. The account was not closed due to a system error. The primary holding entity, The Daniel Vance Revocable Living Trust, exercised its authority to terminate the secondary subsidiary account at eight o'clock this morning. All recurring transfers have been canceled, and the remaining balances have been swept back into the primary trust account."

Arthur’s heart gave an irregular flutter. "What are you talking about? I am Arthur Vance! I am Daniel’s father-in-law! That monthly transfer is a contractual arrangement!"

"According to our records, sir, the sole managing trustee of the master trust is Mrs. Claire Vance. Her legal counsel, Rebecca Lawson, executed the revocation this morning under full fiduciary authority. We have no active accounts under your Social Security number with an open balance. If you have questions, the bank recommends contacting Mrs. Lawson’s office."

The line went dead.

Arthur sat frozen, the phone still pressed to his ear. His hand began to shake. "Eleanor," he called out, his voice suddenly thin.

"What is it, Arthur? Did you look at this wallpaper sample?"

"The bank account," Arthur stammered, standing up so abruptly his coffee sloshed over the rim of the porcelain cup, staining the morning paper. "The trust account. It’s closed. The money isn't there."

Before Eleanor could process his words, the doorbell rang.

It wasn't the gentle, polite chime of a delivery driver. It was three sharp, authoritative strikes of the heavy iron knocker against the solid oak front door.

Eleanor hurried from the sitting room, brushing past Arthur. "Who on earth could that be at this hour?"

She swung the door open, her expression instantly twisting into a haughty scowl.

Standing on the porch was a tall, stoic man in a dark suit holding a manila folder, flanked by a uniformed county sheriff’s deputy with his hands resting calmly on his utility belt.

"Mrs. Eleanor Vance?" the man in the suit asked.

"Yes," Eleanor said, looking down her nose at the deputy. "What is the meaning of this? Why is there an officer on my front porch?"

"I am a process server licensed by the State Superior Court," the man said smoothly, pulling a set of legal documents from the folder and thrusting them into Eleanor’s hands. "You and Arthur Vance are hereby served with a formal Notice of Lease Termination and Demand for Vacatur regarding the real property located at 442 High Ridge Road."

Arthur rushed to the doorway, his face mottled red. "What the hell are you talking about? This is our house! We’ve lived here for eight years!"

The sheriff’s deputy stepped forward, his expression completely neutral. "Mr. Vance, the legal deed of this property is held by High Ridge Holdings LLC, which is an asset of Aegis Security and the estate of Daniel Vance. The legal owner has terminated your occupancy agreement effective immediately. Under the statute, you have thirty days to remove all personal belongings. On the morning of the thirty-first, if you remain on the premises, my department will execute a physical eviction and change the locks."

"This is an outrage!" Arthur roared, his chest heaving. "My son-in-law bought this house for us! Call my daughter! Call Claire right now!"

"Your daughter's attorney signed the eviction order, Mr. Vance," the process server replied coolly. "Have a good day."

Both men turned, walked down the sweeping stone walkway, got into their respective vehicles, and drove away.

Eleanor stood frozen on the threshold, clutching the papers as if they were venomous snakes. Her hands shook violently. "Arthur... what is happening? What did Claire do?"

Arthur grabbed the papers, his eyes scanning the first page until they landed on the bold, unmistakable signature at the bottom: *Claire Vance, Sole Executrix and Trustee.*

"She's trying to ruin us," Arthur hissed, his voice trembling with a mixture of rage and burgeoning panic. "She thinks she can throw a tantrum because we didn't fawn over her last night? We’re going to the hospital right now. We’re going to look that ungrateful little girl in the eye and remind her who raised her!"

Meanwhile, three miles away at the gleaming glass tower of Aegis Security headquarters, Vanessa Vance was pulling into the executive parking garage.

She was driving her sapphire-blue BMW 7-Series, wearing an oversized pair of designer sunglasses, sipping a cold-brew coffee with one hand while scrolling through Instagram with the other. She had ignored the texts from her parents earlier that morning, too preoccupied with planning a weekend shopping trip to New York.

She pulled into her reserved spot marked *VP OF BRAND STRATEGY*, only to slam on the brakes in confusion.

A heavy flatbed tow truck was parked directly behind her stall. Two men in neon vests were in the process of hooking heavy metal chains around the undercarriage of a car—her spare company vehicle that she kept at the office.

"Hey!" Vanessa screamed, rolling down her window. "What the hell do you think you're doing? That’s an executive vehicle! Drop it right now!"

A woman stepped out from the garage elevator lobby. It was Karen Walsh, the Director of Human Resources, flanked by two armed security guards Vanessa had never seen before. Karen held a clipboard and a sealed cardboard box.

"Morning, Vanessa," Karen said, her tone utterly devoid of its usual polite deference.

Vanessa stepped out of the BMW, slamming the door. "Karen, explain to me why these grease monkeys are touching my car before I have Daniel’s board fire you."

Karen didn't flinch. "First of all, Vanessa, Daniel is dead. Second, you no longer work here. This vehicle, along with the BMW you are currently driving, are the property of Aegis Security. The fleet lease has been terminated. Please hand over the keys to both vehicles immediately."

Vanessa let out a shrill, hysterical laugh. "Are you insane? I'm the Vice President! I am Claire’s sister! I own this company just as much as she does!"

"You own zero shares, Vanessa," Karen said evenly, pulling a document from her clipboard. "At seven-thirty this morning, the Board of Directors voted unanimously to terminate your employment for cause, citing gross misconduct and corporate embezzlement. Your personal effects from your desk are in this box. Your corporate credit cards have been deactivated. Your health insurance has been canceled."

Karen signaled to the security guards. "Please surrender your office keycard and vehicle keys. If you refuse, Officer Davis here will arrest you for grand theft and corporate trespass. Furthermore, our legal department, led by Rebecca Lawson, is currently compiling a criminal referral for the two hundred and forty thousand dollars in fraudulent expenses you submitted over the past year."

The color drained from Vanessa’s face. The arrogance that usually defined her posture dissolved, replaced by a sudden, sickening terror.

"Embezzlement? That... that was just perks! Daniel let me do that!"

"Daniel is not here," Karen said coldly. "Claire is. And Claire has ordered a full audit. Keys. Now."

With shaking fingers, Vanessa reached into her designer purse, pulled out the key fobs and her access badge, and dropped them onto the pavement. Karen calmly scooped them up.

"You have five minutes to leave the property on foot, Vanessa," Karen said, turning her back. "If you set foot on this corporate campus again, you will be taken into custody."

Standing in the cold, echoing concrete garage, watching her car being secured to the flatbed, Vanessa pulled out her phone. Her fingers were trembling so hard she could barely tap the screen. She dialed her father.

Arthur answered on the first ring, his voice breathless and frantic. "Vanessa! Where are you? We have a disaster—"

"Dad!" Vanessa wailed, tears of humiliation finally bursting through her makeup. "They fired me! They took my car! Claire sent security to throw me out of the building! She's accusing me of stealing!"

"Meet us at St. Jude’s Hospital," Arthur commanded, his voice shaking with raw desperation. "Right now, Vanessa. She’s locked down the money. She’s evicting us from the house. We have to confront her before she destroys everything we have!"
