Chapter 9 - The Courtroom Ambush

Courtroom 302 of the Marion County Superior Court was packed to the gills with reporters, corporate executives, and curious spectators.
Zachary Albright sat at the defense table, wearing a tailored navy suit designed to make him look respectable, yet vulnerable. He wore an orthopedic collar around his neck—a pathetic, calculated touch orchestrated by Donald Sterling to play the victim.
When the side door opened and I walked into the courtroom, Zachary’s eyes flickered toward me with venom.
Then Hannah walked in behind me.
A collective gasp rippled through the gallery.
Hannah wore a crisp, cream-colored pantsuit that showed the faint yellowing bruises along her jawline and neck. She wore no makeup to hide the reality of what had happened to her. She walked with her head held high, her gaze fixed straight ahead, refusing to acknowledge the cameras or the whispered comments.
She sat down at our table beside Evelyn Reed.
Judge Arthur Vance—no relation to the disgraced police lieutenant, but an elderly jurist with a reputation for zero tolerance for courtroom antics—banged his gavel with the force of a gunshot.
"Order in this court," Judge Vance growled, peering over his reading glasses. "This is a hearing regarding a permanent order of protection and an emergency petition for asset preservation filed on behalf of Hannah Albright. Mr. Sterling, you have the floor, but I warn you: keep your theatrics for the evening news."
Sterling rose, adjusting his silk tie, exuding slick confidence.
"Your Honor," Sterling began, pacing before the bench. "What we have before us today is a tragedy born of elder manipulation. My client, Zachary Albright, has been a pillar of this community. Did he and his wife have marital arguments? Yes. Every marriage experiences strain. But the alleged assault on Easter Sunday was entirely fabricated to justify the violent actions of Colonel Christopher Montgomery—a man trained in lethal warfare who brought the battlefield into a civilian home."
Sterling pointed an accusing finger directly at me.
"The injuries Mrs. Albright sustained were accidental, incurred during the chaos of her father’s violent breach! We request an immediate dismissal of the protective order and the arrest of Christopher Montgomery for aggravated battery!"
Judge Vance didn't flinch. He turned his gaze toward Evelyn Reed. "Counsel for the petitioner. Your response."
Evelyn stood up smoothly. "Your Honor, rather than offer speeches, we offer the court reality. We enter into evidence Exhibit A: the raw, unedited, cryptographically verified audio-video feed from Colonel Montgomery’s tactical bodycam, beginning at 1400 hours on Easter Sunday."
Sterling sprang to his feet. "Objection! That footage was obtained illegally during a criminal trespass!"
"Overruled," Judge Vance snapped. "A father entering a residence under the reasonable belief of imminent grievous bodily harm to his child falls squarely under exigent circumstances. Play the video."
The courtroom lights dimmed.
Two massive sixty-inch monitors mounted on the walls flickered to life.
The audio began with the deafening splintering of the library door.
Then came the visual: Zachary standing over Hannah, the crystal decanter in his hand, Hannah weeping on the floor in a torn dress, covered in blood.
The gallery erupted in shocked whispers. Several female jurors in the gallery put their hands over their mouths.
The audio continued with crystal-clear fidelity.
Zachary’s voice boomed through the speakers: *“You really thought you could run, Hannah? Get up! Look at me when I’m talking to you!”*
Then came the sound of the strike. The whimper.
And then, Zachary drawing the silver .45, screaming: *“Back the fuck up or I swear to God I’ll end you right here! Self-defense! Castle doctrine!”*
The footage showed the muzzle flash, the plaster falling, and Christopher neutralizing him in three seconds of cold, non-lethal precision.
The lights came back on.
The silence in Courtroom 302 was absolute.
Donald Sterling stood frozen, his mouth slightly open, his prepared legal arguments turning to dust in his throat.
Beside him, Zachary’s face had lost every shred of color. His hands were trembling uncontrollably beneath the desk. The orthopedic collar looked absurd, grotesque—a costume worn by a monster exposed to the noon sun.
"Does counsel have any further explanation for this 'peaceful family discussion'?" Judge Vance asked, his voice shaking with pure judicial fury.
Sterling swallowed hard. "Your Honor... we... we request a brief recess—"
"Request denied," Judge Vance said, cutting him off with the slam of his gavel. "In my thirty-two years on this bench, I have rarely seen a more despicable display of cowardice and brutality disguised as privilege."
Judge Vance leaned forward, glaring down at Zachary Albright.
"The permanent order of protection is granted immediately. Mr. Albright is prohibited from coming within one thousand yards of Hannah Albright, her residence, or her family for the remainder of his natural life. Furthermore, pursuant to the federal indictments handed down thirty minutes ago by the Grand Jury for wire fraud, extortion, and interstate domestic violence with a deadly weapon, bail is hereby revoked. Remand the defendant into federal custody."
Two armed federal marshals stepped through the back door, handcuffs ready.
Zachary jumped up, knocking his chair backward. "No! Sterling, do something! You promised me—"
"Shut up, Zachary," Sterling hissed under his breath, stepping away from his client as if he were contaminated.
The marshals took Zachary by the arms, forcing his hands behind his back. The cold steel of the handcuffs clicked shut with a sound that resonated across the entire room.
As they dragged him toward the holding cell door, Zachary turned his head, his eyes wild with terror, looking for Hannah.
Hannah stood up from her seat.
She didn't look down. She didn't flinch. She looked him dead in the eye, her posture straight, her face unyielding.
She didn't speak a single word. She didn't need to. Her silence was an execution.

The heavy steel door slammed shut behind Zachary Albright, sealing him away from the world he thought he owned.
